"The Proteus 1 is a 2 Oscillator Analog mono synthesizer with patch memory. For more info, check out Sonic State
This particular Paia Proteus 1, which were sold in DIY kits back in the early 80's, is one of only 80 known sold by Paia. Who knows how many actually still exist, not to mention still work. The keyboard is based on CEM chips from Curtis. These are the same chips found inside the Prophet 5 and Memorymoog. This particular unit had a bad CEM3440, but I picked up a NOS one and replaced the bad one. The keyboard now works perfectly.
There are no bad keys, scratchy pots, or non working functions. Everything works and behaves the way it should. Even the program patch memory works perfectly. I replaced the batteries for the memory as well.
So what does it sound like? The closest match in tone is probably the Memorymoog, minus the polyphony. It functions very similar to a MicroMoog, only it offers more Osc. waveforms."
