Moog Source PCB: Prototype(?) and Production

flickr set by kb_cheapmods
"Crazy cross-board jumpers that I had to create, along with my own added P24 header (wasn't on the original board), and mine and a previous owner's hand-lettered labeling."

"A few years back I bought both of these PCBs off the same seller on ebay, who said he received them in a package deal. He didn't have a Moog Source, and said he had no use for them.

They were untested, missing parts, as-is, but those words are my middle name! ;) So I did the Buy-It-Now for both.

When I got them, they were noticeably different. One seemed to be the production model, but the other had a different layout, no underside soldermask, no component labeling in the top artwork, some kludgy connections, etc. This latter one had the mysterious designation, "X-1132."
I figured it was a prototype.

So I set about getting them both to work: I downloaded the schematics from the web, identified the missing components and ordered them from various sources, then rebuilt them until they made sound.

For the X-1132, this was much harder than for the production version: I had to create and install some of the missing headers, decipher what connections were missing by following traces or checking pin connections, replace a few broken sockets.

They both work pretty well now. They're both fully recapped, with polystyrene caps for the oscillator timing, LM3045J (mil-std ceramic package) for the transistor ICs, in the hopes that they will be reasonably stable without microprocessor tuning control. I'm thinking of building a 4-osc, 2-vcf, fully-knobbed tabletop synth with them. The great thing about the Source design is that every CV is 10V, so if I want to, I could make it highly modularized.

This set is just a photographic documentation of these two boards"

GH2: Vintage Synth Series Announcement

GH2: Vintage Synth Series Announcement from Ralph Baumgartl on Vimeo.

follow-up to this post "The keyboard footage was shot in 720- 50p and the interview was shot in 1080-50i with the 14-140mm lens. Maybe I am just imagining this, but I think the AF seems to be working slightly better in 1080-50i than 24p.

The video is an announcement of our upcoming Vintage Synthesizer Series. It is a collaboration between Michael Junck of klangkombinat.de and myself, Ralph Baumgartl of baumgartl.de
We will be comparing the original analogue Synths to their software equivalents."

Panasonic GH2 Auto Focus Test with Roland Vocoder from Ralph Baumgartl on Vimeo.

"The Roland Vocoder VP-330 Plus was built from 1979 to 1980. Around 2000 pieces were produced. Underworld, Vangelis, Mike Oldfield, Laurie Anderson and Phil Collins among many other artists were using this vocoder."

The Oakley Deep Equinoxe: Voltage Controlled Eight Stage Phaser Module

via Oakley Sound where you'll find the full details. The following is just an excerpt.

"This is an upgrade of our four stage OTA based phaser design, the Oakley Equinox. The original was wonderfully lush and smooth and similar in sound to the phaser used by Jean Michel Jarre on the Oxygene and Equinoxe albums. The Deep Equinoxe goes further. An additional two or four stages can be added deepening the effect creating a very rich and animated sound.

The unit includes a useful internal low frequency oscillator with accompanying bicolour LED. The centre frequency of the phase shifter can also be controlled by an external control voltage. Thus allowing envelope generators to be used to sweep the phaser to create filter type effects. Four front panel pots and two switches control the module:

Frequency: This pot controls the frequency of the two notches created by the phase shift network.

Emphasis: This pot accentuates the feedback signal within the phaser to create a deeper effect.

Mod Depth: A simple attenuator to adjust the level of the internal LFO or incoming CV.

LFO rate: This pot adjusts the speed of the LFO.

Norm/Deep: This two way toggle switch selects between the classic four stage Oakley Equinoxe mode and the Deep modes.

Six/Eight: This two way toggle switch selects between six stage or eight stage phasing when in Deep mode."

The Oakley Diode Superladder Variable Slope VCF

via Oakley Sound where you'll find full details. The following is just an excerpt.

"The Oakley Diode Superladder is the new version of our long running Superladder filter design. This new version has been especially created to use diodes as the control element instead of transistors. Earlier versions of the Superladder could be built either as transistor or diode ladders but in 2007 a choice was made to concentrate on the transistor version only. The Superladder was therefore optimised to sound good with transistors only...

The Diode Superladder VCF features both voltage control over frequency and resonance. Unique to any diode ladder filter is has a variable shape output. This incorporates a feature first seen on the Oakley Orbital prototypes. A single pot allows you to vary the output from one (or two) pole low pass to four (or five) pole low pass via band pass in the middle."

Maxtone HB - free Ableton Live Pack of a calculator piano

You can find it on Hainbach

"I bought this tiny but horrifying instrument at a flea market in Hamburg in 2001 for 5 Deutsche Mark. It accompanied me on many a summer field trip, much to the horror of my fellow travelers. It simply sounds weird, as the pitch slides from a very short correct tuning time into something far in between. I amended that a bit by introducing attack and sustain settings in the live pack..."
