Wireless MIDI Bluetooth Box Finally Coming for iOS Devices?

Currently wireless MIDI for the iPad is only possible in two ways. One, via a wireless network session on your PC/Mac, or two, via OSC to MIDI via The Missing Link. The Missing Link only supports OSC to MIDI and not MIDI to MIDI when connected over wireless.

At this point in time, a simple wireless Core MIDI device does not exist.  In order for one to work it would probably need to host Apple's Core MIDI Server. Or maybe not...

iOS Musician wrote in to let us know that Jay Coggin may offer a Bluetooth device with MIDI In and Out.

via Jay Coggin's site: "Below [above] is a sort of overall diagram for the system. The iDevice sends and receives MIDI messages with a small external piece of hardware via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This new type of Bluetooth is responsible for making this whole project possible, and is only supported on iDevices beginning with the iPhone 4S and newer. This includes the iPhone 5, iPad 3 and 4, newest iPod Touch, and iPad Mini. The small piece of hardware contains a MIDI In and Out port and communicates these messages with the iDevice. MIDI Out messages can be used to drive, for example, a DAW or hardware synth, and the MIDI In port can receive and forward controller messages to the iDevice."

According to the following quote from Jay on iOS Musician, it sounds like an app would handle the MIDI messages:

"In fact, maybe it’d be best to just have a really basic app that just implements my Bluetooth stuff and sends/receives MIDI messages to other apps with Virtual MIDI... I’m thinking about taking the project to Kickstarter, I’m just a really busy grad student and I almost need a little startup company to get this going."

Full wireless MIDI on iOS devices is a bit of a holy grail. I hope this happens. If you want to see it happen, leave a comment here.
