Noise Engineering Ataraxic Translatron Demo

Published on May 23, 2013

"The Ataraxic Translatron is a linear feedback shift register oscillator similar to those used in the first generation of home video game consoles such as the Atari VCS as well as many other classic arcade games.

Linear feedback shift registers are an ingenious way to produce a variety of sounds with an extremely small amount of hardware. The Atari VCS used only around 35 logic gates to produce all of its sounds. The complexity of tone for relatively minimal hardware made this synthesis technique common for sound in the first generation of video games where hardware costs were the primary development constraint. As video games entered popular culture these sounds became iconic but have seldom made it out of the video game world except when sampled from the games themselves or as their own genre of music “chiptunes”. The Ataraxic Translatron gives you classic arcade sounds in Eurorack format to be used just like any other VCO.

12 patches vary from a simple square wave to white noise with your favorite arcade sounds in between. All tones are available in 6 octaves range. A standard 1 volt per octave pitch control and CV control of the current patch are squeezed into a compact 4HP. An external clock mode that allows an external clock to drive the shift register allows for additional tone generation and modulation.

Please note that Noise Engineering has no affiliation with Atari and the use of the word Atari is as an example of a classic product that uses a similar sound generation algorithm."

Update: SoundClound embed below. Also, for those interested, Roland Kuit will be interviewed on concertzender today. He will explain several important synthesis techniques with live synthesis on the G2 and the Xite-1 with modular IV. Also, compositions can be heard from composers from 1960 until the present. It is in Dutch, but the music has its own language.

Kann denn Liebe Synthie Sein? X with SIMØNE Saturday June 1 Hamburg

"Kann denn Liebe Synthie sein? X (Can Love Be Synth?) with SIMØNE this saturday in Hamburg:) xx k."

I love seeing synths in gig and event posters.

"This is an Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer. It is an earlier version with 32 programs, 8 voice cards and no MIDI..."

MFOS Lunchbox Semi Modular Analog Synth w/t MIDI to CV/Gate Converter

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"Comes with a MIDI to CV/Trigger converter, 7 banana patch cables, 2 short quarter inch patch cables, and power cords for both the synth and the converter.

The synthesizer is a MFOS soundlab design and has:
2x VCO’s (one basic with square output, second with square and triangle output pitch and PW modulation, sync effect is also possible),
1x AR (Attack – Release) generator with one-shot/repeat option,
1x noise source
1x mixer
1x VCF – low-pass/band-pass, voltage controlled filter
1x LFO – rectangle / triangle / ramp / saw output
1x VCA
All sections are rotatable (check out the photo's to see all the destinations) with almost infinite possibilities! This thing is a lot of fun and has tons of vintage analog vibe. Great for experimenting and making whacked out spacy stuff too. You can also route audio through it.

Rear connections include; a mono audio OUT, mono audio IN, CV IN, Trigger IN and power input.

The synth itself works as it should and is in perfect shape, the only miss match is the resonance knob is a different kind (but if functions properly)..."

BUCHLA 291E TRIPLE MORPHING FILTER

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The 291e Triple Morphing Filter consists of three voltage controlled filters operating independently or in parallel.

The amplitude, center frequency, and bandwidth of each filter may be independently voltage controlled. Each may be modulated with externally applied signals.

The morphing capability might be described as moving through a series of snapshots of the filter, with each snapshot consisting of a complete description of the filter parameters, and with each parameter continuously varying between snapshots. Morphing is accomplished with an applied voltage, or alternatively can be initiated with a pulse, with each stage time independently set. Up to eight stages may be employed.

A solo switch provides editing convenience, and an expand input allows ready expansion of the filter.

All of the 291e's settings may be stored and retrieved with the model 225e or the 206e preset manager"

4MS Shuffling Clock Multiplier and Breakout

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"You're looking at both the shuffling clock multiplier and it's breakout module which adds a ton of functionality to the original module. Basically it takes an input - clock, or trigger, and then gives you a variety of related outputs based on multiplications of the input. Five of those inputs can be slipped - IE the beats come ahead of when they should, allowing you to easily construct complex rhythmical patterns for a variety of uses in your modular synth. The breakout really makes this module come alive, giving you so much more control over the signals. A very funky pair of modules!"
