Yellow Rollz Of Peace (for Kira)
Published on May 28, 2013 7numan7·74 videos
"This is a recording of a self-playing patch I made with a Meng Qi Music - Ciat Lonbarde Rollz5' electronic instrument.
The Rollz5 is based on diy "paper circuit" that Ciat Lonbarde published a while ago, and is similar to the Plumbutter instrument, but lacks the PB's sequencer (man-with-the-red-steam) and antenna (deerhorn), and comes with a slightly different configuration of filters (ultrasounds) and oscillators (geometric rollz). Meng Qi Music has designed pcb implementation of the Rollz circuits and offered them for sale to diy-instrument builders. The instrument used in this perfomance was built the MQ pcbs.
The sounds the patch is making, as you can probably hear, include sustained droning notes forming chords that pulsate and shift over time, bass and baritone-treble drum-beats (coming from the gong filters pinged by the slower rollz, i think), and high-pitched cymbal like patterns (from the ultrasound filters, i think).
The video patterns are being generated from LZX euroack video synthesis modules that are being modulated by the audio from the Rollz5 via the LZX Audio Frequency Decoder which has a built-in microphone. The video of me patching is actually where I'm slowly taking down the patch, using the recorded sound for this video to modulate more video synthesis patterns, projected on the instrument and my hands this time instead of the wall. Audio from both cameras was mixed with the computer-recorded audio for the soundtrack of this video (you can hear a few ambient noises, such as from patch cords being removed, that were not made by the Rollz5).
This was my first patch with the Rollz5. And I think it came out very, very nice (especially considering how I didn't really have a clue what I was doing, at first anyways). Throughout the was thinking of a young lady who I have never met named Kira. She is daughter of the founder of an interet forum that I frequent and has been ill in the hospital with life-threatening illness for the past few weeks. This video goes out to her (and all the other people in the hospital, or wherever they are, who need to rest and get well again so that they can proceed with their lives).
Enjoy!"

"Korg is cool! We've been messing about with the MS20, and with a little careful patching up you can set the LFO to sample and hold, and use that to modulate the oscillator and filter.... doing this can make you sound like a robot, or a vintage computer."

RIP Ralph Dyck, Sept 28, 1941 – May 20, 2013

The man behind the Roland MC8 Micro-Composer passed away Monday, May 20, the same day as Ray Manzarek, of The Doors. For synth heads out there, Ralph Dyck may have had more influence. Via the Roland MC-8 Micro-Composer Blog where you'll find more notes on his passing:
"Readers of this blog will, of course, be very familiar with Ralph as the 'godfather' of the Roland MC8 Micro-Composer, but to the most of the music world he remained an unsung hero. Ralph’s primary background was in jazz and commercial music, and I got the sense that he never quite understood the full extent of the influence of his innovations in the realm of electronic pop music production. Suffice it to say that the Roland MC8 provided the definitive blueprint for the way that we work with modern sequencers. Initially Ralph was a bit tentative about sharing too much with a complete stranger (albeit an enthusiastic one), but I think I won him over by laboriously keying-in a piece of his called “Odd Rhythms,” which appears as a demo sequence in the MC8 owner’s manual."

"Real time modular synthesizer performance.
A Synthesizers.com Q960, Q119 and an STG Soundlabs VMS were used along with the Moon 563 Trigger Sequencer and the Moon 554 Octal Clock Divider for time based pitch and gate work.
The main bass line sequence was from the Q960 (which was the master clock) & divided up between three Q106 VCO's. I used the Q963 Trigger Bus to send portions of the sequence to the various vco's. A third vco was ping'd on beat six for the upper midrange note. The downbeat was doubled and a sub oscillator added for punch.
The pulsating string-like sound was the Q119 sequencer into an Synthetic Sound Labs 1200 VCO. It was tuned using the CV IN jack instead of the 1V/OCT. This allowed me to fine tune the half scale for a more analog sound pitch sequence. The Moon 563 was providing most of the off-beat timings and the Q119 was the main pulse timing. A Q962 Sequential Switch was used to divide the pulse string sound into three separate gate timings to the EG.
The high pitched scrape sound which came and went with a pulse core was the SST/Ian Fritz DDVCO through a Grove Audio PM Resonator module and on to a VCA which used a Mega Ohm Audio LFO2 to handle the intermittent sweep in and out. The DDVCO had a MIX CV from another LFO2 and octave switching with a S&H square wave.
The squelchy percussive filter sweep noise was the Q107 State Variable Filter in resonant peak overdrive mode. The Sputnik VCS module provided the timing to the filter and I got to play this by hand throughout. A Q127 FFB was employed to tame the sound.
The final sweeping and pulsing background sound was the STG VMS sent to a pair of Q106 vco's in soft sync. The carrier was pitch modulated by the voltage from the VMS. The sound was sent through a Polivoks LPFilter and finalized through a Blue Sky plate reverb.
A Lexicon MX200, TC Electronic D-Two and a pair of Behringer DD400's filled out the delay lineup."
