Drum Box: Boss DR-110 & Yamaha MR-10 Video Demos

Drum Box: Boss DR-110
Published on Sep 21, 2013 my4trackmachine·113 videos

"The last analog Roland drum machine, the DR-110 came about midway through the rise of the digital sample machines era. While it sported a readable screen and was easy to edit, it lacked the "authentic" sound quality of its digital brothers making it not very popular. Compared to the rest of the TR-X0Xs it has a thin whimpy kick without an accent. The snare did have some snap to it though. Today it stands as a decent alternate to its often compared 606."

Drum Box: Yamaha MR-10
Published on Sep 21, 2013

"The only analog drum machine to come from Yamaha, the MR-10 was a limited preset machine with a solid kick and tunable snares and toms. The presets are a pretty standard affair but where the MR-10 shines best is its playable plastic pads. Armed with a solid kick and fairly unique analog sound it is a largely over looked machine. Even though it is limited it is still quite playable. If you want to step away from the popular and familiar analog sounds of Roland then give a listen to this underrated machine."

Drum Box: Roland TR-606
Published on Sep 21, 2013

"Before the 808 and 909 there was the 606. A capable analog little drum machine with a great sound. Though now over shadowed by other machines with more editing and routing options, the TR-606 holds its own because of its strong sound design and easy programability."

New MFOS 12 Channel Vocoder

via Ray Wilson on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge:

"If you've been wanting to build a vocoder MFOS has developed one and has PC boards (and soon parts kits) for sale. There are plenty of sound samples to check out."

Check it out on the Music From Outer Space website here.

The intro for the archives:

"Features

Built in White/Pink Noise Source
Built in Square/Pulse Oscillator
Mic/Line Inputs for Control and Audio
Good Dynamic Response To Voice Control
Reasonably Intelligible Speech Processing
Introduction

A vocoder has got to be one of the coolest signal processors going. It allows you to impress vocal harmonic and dynamic characteristics onto other sound sources making them sound as if they are talking. This vocoder design works by using one lo-pass filter (100 Hz.), ten successively tuned band-pass filters (154, 208, 285, 395, 542, 720, 1013, 1495, 2000, 2546 Hz.) and one hi-pass filter (3330 Hz.) to separate the incoming control signal into its harmonic constituents. For each band the control signal appearing at the output of its corresponding filter is full wave rectified and low pass filtered to obtain the control signal's envelope voltage. This signal is used to drive a VCA through which the channel's filtered audio is amplitude controlled. The whole circuit is described below but all I can say is that this thing is totally cool and I'm very happy with mine (I am somewhat biased)."

1995 Rise of the Robots - 3DO Intro and Gameplay

Published on Jun 5, 2012 smcgarr·155 videos

Check out :23 - :29 in the intro above.

via wikipedia: "Rise of the Robots is a 1994 fighting game developed by Mirage Studios and published by Time Warner Interactive. It was ported to numerous home console and computer formats, and was also released as an arcade game cabinet."

What's up with a rendered TB-303 being featured in it?

This on in via cheater:

"This is a rare version of the relatively obscure 1994 fighting game Rise of the Robots on the obscure console 3DO. The game's only redeeming quality was the cool electronic music.

The shocker is that one credited musician is Brian May (of Queen fame). But he only did the guitar riff sample used in the main menu. The techno music was credited to "Fuzzy+Logic / Clown Factory"

The original is called "The Dark":

Anyways the 3DO version shows a TB-303 and guitar (the latter probably refers to Brian May, no idea if the former should too?). Then we get some nice 303/808 tracks rolling during the intros.

The 3DO version incidentally does not have any music playing during the fighting sequences. There's also a SNES version and a Genesis version, and the latter has a much cooler soundtrack (due to FM synthesis rather than tiny samples). Here are some links:

Have a lot of fun listening. The Genesis music is pretty cool. Not as epic as Brian's original track, but it holds its own."
