"The Ataraxic Translatron is a linear feedback shift register oscillator similar to those used in the first generation of home video game consoles such as the Atari VCS as well as many other classic arcade games.

Linear feedback shift registers are an ingenious way to produce a variety of sounds with an extremely small amount of hardware. The Atari VCS used only around 35 logic gates to produce all of its sounds. The complexity of tone for relatively minimal hardware made this synthesis technique common for sound in the first generation of video games where hardware costs were the primary development constraint. As video games entered popular culture these sounds became iconic but have seldom made it out of the video game world except when sampled from the games themselves or as their own genre of music “chiptunes”. The Ataraxic Translatron gives you classic arcade sounds in Eurorack format to be used just like any other VCO.

13 patches vary from a simple square wave to white noise with your favorite arcade sounds in between. All tones are available in 6 octaves range. A standard 1 volt per octave pitch control and CV control of the current patch are squeezed into a compact 4HP. An external clock mode that allows an external clock to drive the shift register allows for additional tone generation and modulation.

Please note that Noise Engineering has no affiliation with Atari and the use of the word Atari is as an example of a classic product that uses a similar sound generation algorithm."

"The 4 octave keyboard on these is very playable, offering both velocity and aftertouch.

It not only offers the usual pitch and modulation wheels, but also a ribbon controller, allowing you to alter various parameters with the touch of a finger.

It has an arpeggiator and phrase sequencer built in.

It has 4 digital effects units built in, including: Overdrive, Chorus, Delay and Reverb, and a equalizer built in that offers both graphic and parametric eq with their own front panel sliders.

The synth section offers 2 oscillators, with ring mod and white noise. 2 LFOs and envelope generators for Osc, filter and amp.

These synths are 12 voice polyphonic and offer up to 4 part multi-timbral operation.

There are 256 onboard timbres, which are the single sounds, and 256 onboard programs, which can hold up to 4 parts, in layered, split or midi multi parts.

There are 2 main and 2 auxiliary outputs, a digital out and a separate headphone output. There are MIDI in, out and thru, and 4 different pedal connectors."

"Closing track from my modular set at the Tokyo Modular Festival 2014, visuals by BR-laser from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

Last track of my live modular set at Tokyo Modular Festival 2014. Mesmerizing laser visuals by BR-Laser. The module used is a creation from BR laser, and makes a laser projector work in the fashion of an analog oscilloscope in X/Y mode. The signal flow from the interface module to the laser is fully analogue, because of this the visuals are extremely responsive, and the module can connect to RGB laser projectors.
