oneUP! Atari TIA Custom Chiptune Midi Synt

Published on Jan 4, 2016 manosmodularsystems

"This video is just an audio demo of oneUP!, which is an Atari TIA midi synth. This is a single track, from a single oneUP!, recorded in a single take, with just a bit of reverb. OneUP! is a midi-controlled Atari TIA IC (CO10444D, this time). This demo is very limited; the device is capable of much more. The device is based off of Brian Peter's chip synth under the MIT license."

Update via Chocolatchips in the comments: "These are still available at chocolatchips.com , in the Etsy shop. The boards are redesigned and they're in a new enclosure style. Other midi boxes are available there, too."

Cool retro style case.

Note this is not an Atari Punk Console (APC).

"This is a midi-controlled TIA audio IC from an Atari 2600 and various classic arcades of the late 70’s and early 80’s. It's housed in a road-worthy extruded aluminum enclosure; you could probably jump up and down on this device and it would continue working just fine (but please don't do that). This is the sixth unit made in a short run. Unit #5 sold on Etsy for $125. The TIA IC installed in this unit is new-old stock, meaning that it wasn’t pulled from a used game system; it was warehoused and the first time it made sound was when I tested it here. The video linked on this page contains a short audio demo. This instrument can do allot more, but the demo should whet your appetite. The oneUP! midi synth connects to your usb-capable midi controller or DAW by a common mini USB to USB A cable. The audio out is by eighth inch jack.

When connected to my Windows PC, my DAW recognizes oneUP! immediately. The device is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand or your pocket. This is only the sixth one built and so the work was very much ‘by hand’. This unit features a newer PCB revision and tighter design than the first. The build is solid and durable. The audio output is nice, loud and clear.

The design is based off of Brian Peter’s TIA chip synth under the MIT license. Besides the provided demo, it’s capable of everything in Brian’s demo, too. This unit includes a CO10444D “Atari TIA” audio IC. This unit features a socketed Atari TIA IC, that can be removed and replaced if needed. After the first twenty units, I will most likely be out of TIAs."

Keith Emerson Has Passed Away

It has come to my attention that Keith Emerson passed away yesterday in Santa Monica, CA. We all know who he is and his influence in the world of synthesizers. Below are just a handful of videos including Bob Moog introducing Keith Emerson and his mighty Moog modular, Keith going over the system back in 1993, the introduction of Keith's 50th Anniversary Moog Modular reissued by Moog Music, Fanfare for the Common Man featuring the mighty Yamaha GX1, and finally the classic Lucky Man.

Few musicians will have the impact Keith Emerson has in our world of synthesizers. He will be sorely missed.

ROLAND JD-XA Synthesizer - custom sounds and some presets by jdxa-knight

"CAREFUL - can be L O U D !

MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO THIS ON PROPER SPEAKERS.
I USE UNITY THE ROCK MK II AND THEY CAN GO VERY LOW !
- There are people who say, the JD-XA sounds like a Virus or like a plugin. Let me tell you this: It can do really crazy stuff, but be sure it sounds very (!) warm and analog, in fact i would say it has a completely unique sound (ANALOG-DIGITAL HYBRID ARCHITECTURE!) that reminds me a lot of old Roland SH synthesizers ( and i had a few synths in my life...)
- I am not the best synth programmer in the world and only had the JD-XA for some weeks
- Mostly done with the analog voices but of course i also used the great FX and some digital parts
- My patches are more on the experimental side, be sure that the JD-XA can do so much more, like Juno or Jupiter Sounds
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AND PLAY ALL THE INTEGRA 7 AND JD-XA SOUNDS FROM ROLAND's AXIAL HOMEPAGE FOR FREE
- It is fantastic to layer with an Ambika or Matrix 1000 or other good (poly)synths
- What i like - besides other great features - so much about the JD-XA is its ability to sound very vintage or very modern, like 70s Black Sabbath or "Plop" Bass like Beatles, or that its UNISON switch introduces some phasing which lets you do fantastic Mellotron-like sounds etc etc etc it's possibnlities are endless ;)
- Depending on extreme settings, it may get noisy or hissy... i don't care. for me it is VERY alive.
- In the SonicState Review, Nick is speaking about the weird behavior of analog filter 3. Yes it can go like that. But you also have to watch your levels. All the filters on the JD-XA are very very good. Believe me.
- The JD-XA is super fast to program (ok, some of my patches i will refine a little bid with time ;)
- this might well be the first synth demo, that features a guitar riff of the legendary german Punk band SLIME ;)"

Braids - first hands on + Warp & OP-1 & Clouds

Published on Mar 11, 2016 Alba Ecstasy

"You can always see how user friendly it is a gear from the firt test you made. Braids - I saw a few top quality demos (DivKid) that made me buy it (friends says I'm a MI fanboy - very possible!) - but how does it sounds in reality beats any demo. In this video I just passed through almost all waveforms (video is ending at Noise - my camera stopped so I had to cut the audio) and added Warps as the 2nd sequenced oscillator and OP-1 kick for more flavour. Clouds comes with the reverb. Beatstep Pro is sequencing also Braids and Warps. I'll be back next days with a better camera angle and a more elaborate integration, of my dearest Braids, in my Eurorack. Ripples is in action too and A-148 S&H + A-118 Noise -Random Control, brings flowers to the mix!

PS: please try to ignore the glitches from beginning, it's such a mess these days with my cables..."

Update:

Braids - Ripples - Clouds

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Alba Ecstasy

"This is a continuation of the "Braids - first hands on" video. A better video angle, I also changed the position of the Beatstep Pro and it seems that the power source of the Eurorack is influencing it, making BSP unstable. Only one thing, I saw too late that I should cut a little bit the IN GAIN of Clouds - sorry for the "red" level on it.
My opinion on Braids: even it is digital and I heard so many opinions like "I'm out of here when I see digital modules in a modular synth", well, they're wrong. It is important what you do with a sound source, how you use it in your music, not what is it. Oliver of Mutable Instruments it's a pure genius. And I'm not the only one who say it. All his modules are great, no matter are analog or digital.
Braids it's amazing. Exactly what just I need it for my Berlin School sequences or for drones. Or for leads! Or monotimbral pads! Here it for yourself. Braids it's the star here, but you cannot exclude Ripples and Clouds.
