Friday Fun - SH-01A and Lyra-8 Together

Published on Dec 1, 2017 sonicstate

"A couple of recent synth reviews mean we have both the Roland Boutique SH-01A and the SOMA Laboratory Lyra-8 still in the studio, so we hooked them together to see what came out.

Simple sequence on the SH-01A with distortion and delay and drones from the Lyra-8

Volca Keys Ambient Jam with Specular Reverb V2

Published on Dec 1, 2017 Slenterende Beer

"I just got my GFI System Specular Reverb V2 and this was the first sounds that came out when I hooked it up to my Volca Keys. I loved the sound so much that I just uploaded it here.

I used the Zoom MS-70CDR just to add the delay, which you can clearly hear at the start. The Volca Keys' delay is so noisy, which can be cool, but doesn't sound great when combined with a high-quality reverb like this.

Please use headphones to listen to this clip - the stereo reverb is great.

FOTN - Synth Jam Vol. 1

Published on Nov 30, 2017 DJ FOTN

"To close off the year I wanted to do something quite different to my usual DJ sets, so for episode 019 of my Sound Flight Sessions radio show / podcast I've recorded a live Synth Jam of interpretations of music that has inspired me over the years.

The set is in three rough sections, section one is inspired by the computer game music from my childhood that initially sparked my love of musc, part two features music from the producers that first really got me into dance music (Paul Van Dyk, BT and Sasha) and then finally in part three I wanted to play some of the more modern music that is inspiring me now.

I've named this 'Vol. 1' as there were so many ideas and directions I could have taken this in that I'm sure I'm going to want to do another one!

There were a few issues with the cameras, some crashed, some stopped recording and the lighting is a bit crap but you get the idea :)

All of the music was performed live using Ableton and various outboard gear including my Moog Sub 37, Moog Mother 32, Roland Juno-106 and 303."

Fredric Effects Releases BugBrand BugCrusher Stomp Box

via BugBrand:

"It has been a while since I made BugCrushers, but I'd still get emails asking for the old Micro version. These would always poke my brain and get me wondering - I knew I couldn't head back to pedal designs due to production methods, so instead I looked around for someone take it on themselves and that's where Tim of Fredric came in. I provided him a slightly updated design of the Micro/WorkshopCrusher and he's now brought it into production - so do please support him and buy direct!

Will I ever do another BIG BugCrusher version? I don't know for sure - I did try a couple of design attempts this year, but nothing quite stuck. It would be a good thing to have in the Red lineup though."

via Fredric Effects

"The BugCrusher is an Analogue Sample Rate Reducer - a Sample & Hold circuit run at audio rates - which produces aliasing effects on your signal.

With the Rate set high this imparts a clear fizzle & crunch, while at low rates any high frequencies will seem to wrap-around in an effect somewhat akin to a clean ring-mod.

Despite the name, the BugCrusher is not an actual BitCrusher - most BitCrusher effects will have Sample Rate (x-axis quantization) and Bit Depth (y-axis quantization) and are typically digital in nature.

Tom Bugs, the creator, says 'Back when I was making BugCrushers, they were well liked for processing synths & drum machines, but the effect also has found favour with bassists as the low frequencies can pass through cleanly while the highs are crunched'."
