Analog Modal Synthesis On Eurorack Modular

Published on Jul 30, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"This second part of our series on physical modeling synthesis with eurorack modular synthesizers covers modal synthesis. Modal synthesis utilizes many resonant bandpass filters as a resonator which can then be excited by many different types of impulses or sounds. Since most modal synthesis models use dozens or hundreds of bandpass filters digital implementations are more practical, but we put this together with analog bandpass filters to see how it would work.

The quad filters we used were the Qu-Bit Tone: https://www.perfectcircuitaudio.com/t...

Isotonik Studios NEW RELEASE – SYMBIOTIC BY JIM DRONES – NOVATION CIRCUIT PACK

Symbiotic - Jim Drones - Novation Circuit Pack - Demo One from Isotonik Studios on Vimeo.

via Isotonik Studios:

"Jim has been one of our most prolific sound desgners for the Novation Circuit. He loves it so much that even after pursuing other synths having sold his original Circuit he dove straight back in and bought a new one to complete this pack.

Unlike Jim's previous packs which focused purely on the sound design of the patches, this new pack comes loaded with Samples and Sessions for you to plug in and play to your hearts content.

The Symbiotic pack for Novation Circuit features 64 patches, 64 samples, and 32 sessions for the wide spectrum of electronic music genres.

These carefully-crafted Circuit elements have been designed with producers of Ambient, Techno, House, Psytrance, Breaks, Electro, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, and Downtempo in mind. From classic synthesizer sounds to the evolving esoteric, Symbiotic breathes new life and options for user creativity into Circuit.

This new batch of 64 patches allows for improved mixing possibilities by providing multi-mode filter versions that can act as a form of quick equalization without as much need to return to editors while creating patterns and sessions. The upper patch section of 32 is mirrored by the lower section of 32, meaning that if a patch doesn’t quite fit in your mix at first, the matching patch in the opposite section offers a contrasting filter type. This means more precise isolation of frequencies, as well as variance of harmonic qualities and richness within your own patterns and session creations.

Consistent Macros

All patches contained in the pack adhere to consistency between their macro assignments.

Macro 1 – Filter Cutoff
Macro 2 – Filter Resonance
Macro 3 – Envelope 1 Attack
Macro 4 – Envelope 1 Decay
Macro 5 – Envelope 1 Sustain
Macro 6 – Envelope 1 Release
Macro 7 – Chorus, Phaser, or Random
Macro 8 – Filter Drive & Distortion

Creative Layering

Symbiotic also offers a multi-mode filter concept to sound design within Circuit. Along with panning and macro adjustments, it can provide a new technique for adding depth to your synths parts. Using corresponding patches from both the upper and lower synth sections on Circuit’s synth parts together allows for combined synth part layers consisting of four oscillators, four LFO’s, six envelopes, and so on.

Samples for All Bass Music Types

Also included in the Symbiotic pack is an assortment of 64 high-quality samples, taken from various analogue and digital drum machines and synthesizers. Each section is organized in batches of 16, for easy navigation.

Sample set includes:

16 Kick Drums
16 Snares & Hits
16 Hi Hats & Cymbals
16 Sound FX & Synth One Shots"
