Skyline Forty-Nine P does Mozart (Adagio in C)

Published on Mar 3, 2019 Kris Lennox

I beleive this is the first demo of the Skyline Forty-Nine P on the site. The only other post is this recent auction listing. This is likely the first time many of us are hearing one.

"Not too long ago I picked up this old synth/organ. It wasn't working at all, so I've spent a little time on it/brought it back to life. Great to hear it. I put up an article a few weeks back with photos of the innards (plus manual/schematics etc) - link here - https://krislennox.blogspot.com/2019/...

Reverb was added post.

To the piece: Mozart's KV356 for Glass Harmonica - an instrument invented by Mr. Benjamin Franklin. Have a look on YT and you'll find a live performance of someone playing this piece on Glass Harmonica. Beautiful sound.

The range of the Glass Harmonica is ideal for the synth. Also, being Mozart, there are sections where one can quite easily imagine a different tone (this is common with his piano works, and he often instructed his students to imagine certain parts belonging to certain instruments). I'm utilising the sense of difference within the piece to harness a small selection of tones from the Skyline.

The Skyline can sound very synth-like (i.e when the vibrato & sustain are on) - I'll upload something more 'synth-y' in the near future. Interestingly, it is Farfisa chips under the hood.

I enjoy playing these kind of instruments: no concerns RE voice limits/note stealing. They are also good for technique i.e finger-swapping to maintain a good legato (far less forgiving than piano).

PS I had a look on IMSLP at the Glass Harmonica repertoire: it is quite small, but there are a few sets. I'll maybe take a full set and record it on the Skyline. It would be a very nice way of not only expanding repertoire awareness for any curious listeners, but also giving the Skyline a notable recorded repertoire.

All best (more on this instrument soon)
Kris"

Waveform Research Centre Report of the Past Half Year

Published on Mar 3, 2019 Dennis Verschoor

"The Waveform Research Centre is a studio based in Rotterdam. The setup is just test equipment. Which makes stuff a bit harder and cooler. Basically there are no sequencers, envelope generators and vca's in the studio. And now you probably wonder if you can actually make any music without these? Well there is also other cool stuff which doesn't exist in a (modular) synthesizer. And by learning and using these items to and synth programming knowledge cool stuff can be made. The recordings are done with the iPhone, sorry about that. And the studio is basically available for rent and it's possible to book me with it to teach you stuff."

4 Modules, 8 Cables - AE Modular Synth Patch Challenge 08 #TTNM#TTNM

Published on Mar 3, 2019 The Tuesday Night Machines

"This is an experiment for the AE Modular Patch Challenge #08 :) We were tasked to only use four modules and eight patch wires, which I think worked out quite well ... if you like reverb-drowned, ambient drone music. Haha! PATCH NOTES BELOW + more info here: http://forum.aemodular.com/thread/196...

Patch Notes:

4 Modules:
VCO, VCO, LOGIC, MULTIFX

8 Wires:
VCO 1 square to VCO 2 CV2
VCO 1 square to LOGIC 1A input
VCO 2 square to VCO 1 CV2
VCO 2 square to LOGIC 1B input
LOGIC NAND to VCO 2 CV
LOGIC AND to VCO 1 CV
LOGIC XOR to MULTIFX input
MULTIFX to MASTER I/O audio out

I set the MULTIFX to Shimmer in Lo-Fi mode and turned just the wet output up at the beginning. Then I play mostly with the VCO pulse width and coarse frequency knobs. The pulse width knob can silence the square wave VCO output when set to max width, so it's a crude way to turn down the volume of the VCO. Of course there is a lot of cross-modulation happening, so there are weird pitch changes, etc. but the Shimmer effect smoothes everything nicely into some kind of ambient drone music :D"

Limited Edition Korg Prologue (1 of only 5 ever made)

"We have here a limited edition, platinum version of Korg’s 16 voice Analog Synthesizer, The Prologue. Only 5 of these bad boys were ever made for the grand opening of Guitar Center’s flagship store in Hollywood, CA. I’m not too sure what happened to the other 5 seeing as how there is very little information about these online save for a few articles from synth and keyboard magazines. I managed to pick the last one up from the very same store it was created for. I’ve been toying with the idea of selling it for awhile now so I i ally caved and told myself I’d put it out for a couple weeks and if it sells it sells but if not then I’d take it down. It will come with a matching black case that has a placquard of authenticity on it. Like I said I’m not too sure what happened to the other 5 so this might be your only chance to own this rare beauty. I of course will package like a pro and get full insurance for the shipping process.."
