Superbooth 2023: Xaoc Devices - New Modules

"We spoke to Lukasz from Xaoc Devices at Superbooth 2023, where he introduced five new modules. The first one is Ostrawa, a stereo mixer with four channels with full stereo inputs, a full stereo aux loop that can change from pre-fader to post-fader, manual muting, balance control, two direct inputs, and four inputs for gates for muting the channels of Ostrava. Next we saw, Bohumin, an expander to Ostrava which adds a second stereo auxiliary loop. The third module, Deva, is an expander for Timiszoara, which is a multi-effects module that adds two analog feedback loops with CV control over the return volume and tilt filters.

The last two new modules are from the Leibniz subsystem, which includes Dresno and Rostock. Dresno is a vastly improved new version of one of the first modules released in the subsystem that features a high-grade 16-bit converter, a switch in the middle that switches the range of Fresno, and calibration for chromatic quantization. Lastly, Rostock is a binary data pipeline that is a digital shift register that can delay anything fed into it by up to 64 samples. Users can adjust the number of samples and engage the loop button to create a repeating and regular sequence.

Superbooth 2023: MP MIDI - MP Controller

"At Superbooth 2023, we spoke to Marius from MP MIDI about their MP controller that allows users to control all their third-party plugins like hardware. Compatible with major DAWs such as Logic, Ableton, Studio One, and Cubase, the controller features 127 encoders, four pages for mapping multiple parameters, and a favorites list for customization. The MP controller also allows for zooming on small plugins, controlling multiple parameters from a single knob, and templates for individual plugins are saved on the user's machine. The device can be connected via USB-A to USB-C or Thunderbolt, and there's an HDMI out to put the interface on a big screen, should you wish.

Superbooth 2023: SoundForce - Controller Integration With Arturia

"We met Nicolas from SoundForce again and he shared some exciting news about the integration of their MIDI controllers with selected Arturia V Collection plugins. By copying an XML file onto your computer, you can now switch presets from the plugin using the controller, this means that the data can be ingested and the controller interface can be updated, avoiding values jumping around when the plugin is in a different state than the MIDI controller.

Nicolas also demonstrated a type of pickup mode where the controller will pick up and take over the plugin when the values are the same. This means you can have one controller in your computer, and smoothly update the controller to all those changes during production or live sets.

Superbooth 2023: SoundForce - Chorus 6

"We spoke to Nicolas from SoundForce at Superbooth 2023, who showcased their new chorus module, which comes in two versions - regular and compact. The compact version is a classic Juno chorus with stereo inputs and outputs. The full size model has the same features as the small one, but with the added ability to turn on manual mode. This allows the user to control the LFO that creates effects using BBD chips. Working in manual mode, you have a mix control, which blends the input signal and the output of the BBD delays. You can also modulate the BBDs very fast, creating droney, experimental noises.

While the circuitry is the same as the original Juno chorus, the Chorus 6 is driving the BBD chips using clocks with a modern microcontroller which allows the addition of more control, more waveforms, and includes clock driver signals sampled from Nicolas' own Juno-106.

Superbooth 2023: Flame - Fire Drum Machine

"We spoke to Felix from Flame about their new eight-channel drum synthesizer, Fire. The drum machine currently has nine algorithms, and while it is virtual analog, it offers an extensive range of parameters that allow for manipulation of click level, click envelopes, transient samples, and resonance, among other features. It also offers a unique advantage of not having a fixed structure and allowing for eight bass drums, for example, and you can morph parameters for happy accidents. Fire has a global user CV, and a total of eight audio outs. It can be controlled via sensors, LFOs, foot pedals, and MIDI.

Flame's new sequencer, Takt, can be used in combination with Fire via MIDI, freeing up the gate trigger outs and CV outs. Fire can be used with triggers and MIDI concurrently, if you enjoy things getting messy.

Superbooth 2023: Between Machines - Qlocker

"We spoke to Dennis from Between Machines at Superbooth 2023 about their latest module, Qlocker. This parametric trigger sequencer generates trigger rhythms and has five outputs which are generated depending on how the controls are set. The module has a Tempo and 16th note Swing. The module is all about performance and playability, with the blend output, mixing two probabilities that can be tuned to control the amount of activity you want. There is also a mask knob, which can thin out the sound in a musical fashion, and a button in the middle which loops the last bar. The buffer is a one-bar capture.

Clocker has been in development for over a year and was shown at Superbooth last year. The company has fine-tuned it over the last year and plans to release it in the next two to three months, hopefully in August or September.

Erica Synths' New Oscillator-Free Steampipe at Superbooth 2023

"Erica Synths teamed up with Dutch company 112 dB to create the Steampipe—a unique, eight-voice, oscillator-free synth designed to mimic the way sound is created by wind instruments. The unit features three main sections: Steam, Pipe, and Reverberation.

The Steam section is modeled after the lungs and mouth of a wind instrument player, with a generator that creates the flow of "steam" and an envelope that determines the force in which it's blown out. The Pipe section is similar to a flute, featuring a push dial within the feedback box that bounces the steam to generate tone. Lastly, the reverberation section adds space and ambience."
