Percy Grainger's Free Music Machine

video upload by Robotussin Vintage Synth

"A video from the Australian Broadcasting Company about a composer and inventor called Percy Grainger, who made electronic instruments in the 1950s that would follow a curving line to create pitch and music. He physically made the curving line out of thick sheets of card and fed them into the machine, controlling the pitch of an oscillator."

Is this really the cheapest portable music tracker?

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"My video on the #picoTracker [posted here] got a lot of comments asking me to look into #LittleGPTracker (or #lgptracker) on #linux #gaming consoles. Is this _really_ the cheaper way to get the same result? Table of contents:

00:00 hello
00:35 hardware overview
01:10 installing LittleGPTracker
01:56 launching the tracker, demo song
02:34 record and import your own samples
03:25 create a new song
03:57 software structure: songs, chains and patterns
04:25 button combos
04:41 listening to and assigning samples to instruments
05:35 create a "four to the floor" beat
05:51 setting song tempo
06:25 adding more drums
06:58 chords & bass tracks
07:51 using chains to create chord progressions
09:04 song playback with multiple chains
09:38 using tables
10:14 using grooves
11:14 adding a MIDI instrument...
11:42 Picotracker vs gaming handheld
12:10 finished track
13:00 conclusion

Nibbler Rhythms

video upload by SCHLAPPI ENGINEERING

"Getting a little more into detail about ways the Nibbler can be used for generating rhythms and what happens when you modulate it with a clock divider.

0:00 Intro
0:57 Modules used and patch description
1:39 Triggering the drum brain and Async/Sync explanation
2:44 Patching up the clock divider
3:50 Simplest Nibbler Rhythm (disco?)
4:55 Combining clocked Nibbler and clock divider
8:41 adding the second Nibbler
10:55 Let's speed it up again...

The Nibbler overview video should probably be watched first (though there is some overlap)"

240107 - Jamuary2024 - Liven MEGA Synthesis Jam

video upload by ChrisLody

"Full Disclosure: I occasionally take on freelance work at Sonicware on an hourly rate producing synth & sample sound design, beta testing, checking English text, video manuals etc. This video wasn't paid for directly but as a result of my work with Sonicware it is marked as Paid Promotion

7 days into Jamuary 2024 and I've only managed 2, not really what I'd planned! But at least now the reveal of the Liven MEGA Synthesis is out of the way I can upload some jams using it. Plus this isn't an official Sonicware video, so I can mention the fact that it's designed to emulate the experience of making music on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis hardware unlike in my last video, hopefully to the surprise of almost nobody 😄

I didn't create any fresh patches for this jam, it's all just presets and there's plenty to choose from (including my work of course).

From this video you should be able to hear that the general lo-fi vibe of the YM2612 has been replicated nicely. Part of that is due to a design flaw in it's 9 bit DAC which distorted the sound at quite volumes, often called the Ladder Effect. You can turn that on and off per track on the MEGA.

Apart from the delay on the lead sound I'm not using any effects here, the distorted guitar lead sound is created using just FM synthesis. On the original Mega Drive/Genesis adding delay would have had to be done by duplicating notes onto another channel of the chip using up polyphony, but the MEGA has an effects section so this is a regular guitar pedal like delay effect."
