Best Ambient Synth Shootout #146: Wersi M.A.X.1 - Song 1

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first recording with the Wersi M.A.X.1. Almost nothing is known about this small desktop sound module. It's 16-voice, 8-way multitimbral. The minimal, somewhat non-self-explanatory UI allow you to adjust a few parameters, as long as you have access to the manual, which unfortunately isn't available online. However, the 96 preset sounds are simple but surprisingly useful. The drum sounds are clearly ROM-based, but everything else sounds like a real FM synth to me.

I used for the recording the following FX pedals:
Hologram Microcosm, Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe, GFI System Specular Reverb 2.

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. On some tracks Compressor and EQ where added in Cubase. The final song was then mastered using iZotope Ozone.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)

Musical Lucky Dip #1 : Maria Mitchell

video upload by MIDI IN

"This is the first 'lucky dip'. I needed to make my music-making more challenging, more fun, less routine. It won't necessarily be weekly, I'll work to constraints generated randomly.
The lucky dip gave me : 3/4 time, tempo Larghissimo - Larghetto ( less than 66 bpm), 5 instruments; electric guitar, hammered dulcimer, shanai, synth strings, featuring tenor sax. electronic, spoken word.
I chose to speak quotes from a lady of science, Maria Mitchell.

Live Set Re-recorded - from Superbooth25, feat AJH SYNTH all-analogue modules

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This is a re-recording of a 20-minute live set by @DreamsOfWires for Superbooth25, and consists of two old tracks from my video back-catalog. It's quite a minimal rig, configured as two all-analogue synth voices - one for melodic patterns, one for pitched drone parts.
The actual performance at the event suffered technical problems as a result of failing cables and a dodgy musician's inability to recover much from it. As a result said musician decided to record a version of it after returning home, demonstrating how it should have sounded.
In my defence, this rig had been on display for 3 days at the AJH Synth booth, demoing modules, being re-patched, fiddled with, then re-patched, etc... but then again, a bad workman always blames their tools :P
I hope this version is more audible.

Modules used:
(AJH SYNTH)
Matrix VCF
Transistor Ladder Filter
Sonic XV Diode Ladder Filter
Vintage Transistor Core VCO x4
Sample Hold & Slew
Contour Generators
Wave Swarm
Ring SM

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack modular range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Lyra-8 - Everything I *Think* I Know

video upload by Oscillator Sink

"This is my 3rd attempt to make a 'guide' to the Lyra-8. It's an instrument that is, in some ways, difficult to talk about - it has a cyclical nature that requires you to explain ideas before you explain them. The approach I've settled on is to try and address 4 main areas as holistically as possible in order to share some useful tips, creative approaches and some practical and technical techniques that will, hopefully do some combination of: introduce some new ideas, problem solve and inspire some new approaches to this magical instrument.

Wish me luck!

Zeptocore - a live looping sampler

video upload by Floyd Steinberg

"The Zeptocore (https://zeptocore.com ) is a sample looper and live remixing device based on the RPI2040. I bought this as a DIY kit a year ago and somehow managed to read to build instructions incorrectly. :-) But I finally picked myself up to repair it, so here's the video. Table of contents:

Lightweight Arduino ESP32 MIDI Sequencer + Live-Looping Session Demo

video upload by Marcel Licence

"I built a small MIDI sequencer for Arduino ESP32 synthesizer projects.
With it you can:
Record, play back, and overdub notes.
Use many slots - record a new loop and switch slots while it plays.
Change the tempo anytime, even during playback.
Set the loop length and the number of pre-count bars before you start.
Play it together with my polyphonic e-piano project.

The firmware is still work-in-progress.
I am fixing bugs to keep it stable and to remove short audio pauses that happen when the memory moves data."
