Track Breakdown: Redshift 6 Paraphony, Digitakt 2, Chroma Console

"This is the first proper track I've made with the Supercritical Redshift 6, and I wanted to take it apart properly. The chord stab you hear at the start is three notes coming out of a single analog voice, which is the thing I still find hard to believe.

The Redshift is multitimbral, so I used it as three instruments at once: a pad chord stab, an arp, and a three layer lead. Each one goes out of its own stereo output. The two aux outs are always dry, meaning they skip the internal FX section entirely, so the arp runs into a Chroma Console and the pad into a Microcosm. The lead keeps the synth's own delay.

Everything else melodic is sampled from the Redshift into the Digitakt II, which is also doing all the sequencing. Around 16 layers in total, so apart from the drums this is one synth.

I also skipped Overbridge this time and recorded four stems straight into a Zoom LiveTrak, which meant committing to the mix as I went. That's why the bass is split across two tracks.

"Synth history could have been different, if the FBT Synther 2000 became a hit when it was released in 1973. This filter-less three oscillator monster from Italy sounds unabashedly electronic. In no way does it imitate acoustic instruments, but it drones deeply and has a massive bass. Truly unique, and very rare, it is an interesting artifact in synth history.

Rain City Modular SCS-X Advanced Clock Parser

"The SCS-X is a dual multiplier/divider module in 3U/6HP. Each section can multiply and divide a clock source up to 64x. Clock sources include internal clock, Rain Sync bus clock, external clock, or the output of the other section. When set to 'Musical' mode, the output can range in musical divisions from 32nd notes up to 2 bars in length.

Advanced patterns can be created by setting a frame length from 1-32 steps, and number of active pulses per frame. You can manipulate the active pulses through various parameters, including the amount the pulses spread across the frame, and the rotation of the pattern relative to the start of the frame. When spread is set to maximum, the SCS-X acts as a euclidean sequencer. Set the patterns in motion with a randomness function that varies from frame to frame.

Crossfaded: Complex Modulation

"Let’s crossfade between two cycling function generators (RAMPS) and use that x-fade signal output to modulate the filter cutoff on Deuxd. And then let’s take one of Crossfaded’s internal (but accessible) LFOs and pan that signal between the two function generators’ shape modulation CV inputs. Let’s do that together."

Crossfaded is 14HP VCA-core utility for Eurorack Modular Synthesizers

Built in LFO with two shapes: Swirl (triangle) & Bounce (square)
Dedicated LFO output

Each of the two crossfader sections has 2-input and 2-output. When using both signal inputs the output signal will present the opposing input signal. For example: Signal input 1A fades between outputs B to A. While simultaneously the opposite is true; Signal input 1B fades between outputs A to B.

When only one input is used the outputs can be patched to a mixer's left + right channels for a classic "Auto-Pan" effect. Adjust the LFO's rate and depth to taste.
