What is ARK?​

ARK is a music production computer where algorithms, chance, and signals converge in a single creative workspace.

A 16-track canvas where you can place CV generators, drum voices, synth voices, and different types of samplers, including drum players, slicers, and granular samplers.

At its core is a powerful composition system built around scales, chords, and harmonic relationships. Build progressions, generate melodies, and develop musical ideas that stay connected to the harmonic context of your track."

"Aito Ventures is launching an new app. Detune is an iPhone app that teaches sound design and music theory through short interactive lessons. It runs its own wavetable synth engine, and every lesson, challenge and free-play session is played on that engine rather than on video.

The Sound Synthesis path is 29 modules across seven acts, covering waveforms, the volume envelope, the filter, two-oscillator patches, filter envelopes, the LFO, resonance, effects, mono and glide, the sub oscillator, noise, the modulation matrix, and FM, ring modulation and hard sync. Each act ends with a checkpoint patch the user builds from scratch and keeps.

The Music Theory path is ten modules (scales, triads, chord changes, minor colour, fifths and octaves, chord progressions, melody, keys, and rhythm) taught by ear, with no notation required.

Challenges are ear-based: pick the brighter of two sounds, match a target patch, place the notes. A daily patch gives one sound-design problem per day.

Synth engine: two wavetable oscillators plus a sub oscillator and noise source; low-pass, band-pass and high-pass filter with resonance; two envelopes; LFO; modulation matrix; delay, reverb, distortion, chorus and phaser.

The library was sampled over the years in synth studios, private collections and on my own gear. The interface is designed as a physical object: the scope switches between green, blue, red and an anaglyph 3D mode, the cabinet's power switch bypasses the plugin, and a hidden panel below the screen holds volume, contrast and brightness controls. The promo shoot was done on a real 1980s green phosphor monitor, not rendered.

These Plugins Sound AMAZING… Except One

"Space Age Strings, Traveler 1.1, Arturia MiniFreak V, and Liminal Space 2 RC6: three plugins I'm excited about, and one that's... fine. Your old pal Keith demos vintage strings, custom wavetable import, Bloom and reverse reverb, and gloriously backward shoegaze. Grab your mod wheel for another episode of your favorite talky synthesizer content show!

First up: Authentic Soundware's Space Age Strings, with gorgeous legatos, vintage ribbon-mic character, and serious Mancini energy. We pair those nine violins with Liminal Space 2's new Space Age Scoring Stage preset and compare the library's built-in reverb with some algorithmic spaciousness.

Then we revisit Traveler! Version 1.1 fixes the big wavetable-workflow frustrations from my previous review: now I can point it at my existing KRC Mathwaves folders without duplicating gigabytes of content. Cue polygonal bells, Morlet wavelet vowels, and a much happier Keith. We also try MiniFreak V's new user-wavetable import. It's great to have it, but I've got opinions about the workflow, the effects, and whether the software version floats my boat.

Finally, we explore my Liminal Space 2 RC6 reverb for macOS and Windows: MIDIverb II-inspired Bloom sounds, reverse-style swells, ACTUAL reversed audio, and instant imaginary Cocteau Twins guitar with Native Instruments' Electric Sunburst Deluxe. We build Bloom effects on piano, shape them with curves and wavetables, and explore Reverse Capture's Diffuse and Clear modes. Then we get dark and wobbly with Clockwarp and the new Vulture 224 filter, inspired by Alex at Vulture Culture. Woot!

"Genuine Moog Sonic Six — the briefcase-style duophonic synth Bob Moog himself used for demos to teach children. Essentially a Mini-Moog in a suitcase. Two VCOs (saw, triangle, variable-width rectangle), two cross-blendable multimode LFOs, ring modulator, noise generator, sample & hold, external audio input, 49-key duophonic keyboard with high-note/low-note/duo priority modes, spring-loaded horizontal pitch bender, built-in amp and speaker.

Condition: Tunes and holds. All controls functional. Speaker and monitor circuit working. Case latches and handle intact. See photos for cosmetic condition.
