1976 Paia Model 4700 Analog Modular Synthesizer Deep Dive

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by Mears

"A deep dive on this rare, and synthesizer almost 50 years old. I've spent countless hours restoring it, and am very pleased with the results. It can produce a wide range of sounds, thick and beefy baselines, pillowy ambient textures, fat analog drums and so much more! This video covers the features of the synth, detailed shots and explanations of the restoration and internal components as well as a ton of high quality audio recordings of the various sounds this synth can produce.

Here's where you can find a whole bunch of great info about this synth: https://modularsynthesis.com/paia/470..."

"Really neat vintage synth, in great working condition. I restored it electronically 3 years ago, and have only used it in my home studio. I'm the second owner, and acquired it directly from the original owner whom purchased it in the 1970's, I believe it's from 1976. I have a bunch of paperwork for the synth somewhere, if I can find it(I'll try, it's buried in boxes somewhere!) I'll include it as well. It's worth noting that during the restoration, I preferred to keep the synth as original as possible, but electronically stable, and to make a 50 year old synth as reliable as possible. It includes and uses the original "pin" cables, so neat & rare. That being said, it's still a very old synth, from the early days of modular synths, when slight changes in mains voltage and temperature variations manifested themselves in "interesting" ways. I'd assume that the purchaser of this synth understands that and doesn't expect the oscillator tracking and tuning stability to be similar to modern synths. Please watch the Youtube video I created for this synth, which goes into great detail about the synths condition, and should answer any questions you have, and give you a clear idea of what to expect if purchasing.

One last thing, this will have to be sent in 2 boxes, and the synth is fairly heavy(each piece is 11kg on it's own). The shipping rate on the listing is not representative of what the actual shipping cost will be, so please if purchasing, expect that the shipping rate will be higher than indicated on the listing. The calculated shipping on Ebay doesn't accommodate multi-box shipments unfortunately. Feel free to contact me for a shipping quote, and if you purchase, please wait for me to provide you with a quote before sending payment. I'll do everything I can to keep the shipping cost as low as possible, but also make sure it arrives safely.

Thanks!

"Paia was always a cost-effective alternative to the pricey modular synths of the 70s. They were often sold as kits so were very popular among DIY synth people and electronics hobbyists. The beauty of Paia gear is that it's very simple and most if not all of the parts are still readily available from electronics suppliers. Paia gear sounds like nothing else. Its got a certain low-fidelity sound to it, but thats a major part of its charm. If you're new to vintage modular synths and want a real one but are on a limited budget, this may be a good place to start. Of course if you already own Paia gear, this would probably make a very nice expansion to your current system. This stuff is hard to find when you want it, so buy now before it's gone.

This system needs work and is being sold as-is. When we first got it, it wasn't working, so our tech replaced some caps in the power supply. Once he powered it up, he determined it had other problems that needed fixing, but tech time is limited and we need to focus on higher valued items. Since most people into Paia gear are also into DIY electronics and enjoy restoration projects, we decided to sell this system as is. Please don't buy it if you're not prepared to fix it or know someone who can fix it for you.

This system includes the folllowing components:

VINTAGE 1980 PAIA 4700-SERIES SYNTHESIZER (ASSEMBLED FROM KITS) W/ PRO KEYBOARD

via this auction

"Analog 'patch cord' monophonic synthesizer that contains all of the fundamental modules needed for music synthesis. I assembled this synthesizer in 1980 using 4700-series kits from the legendary PAiA Electronics, Inc. in Oklahoma.

This synthesizer was in “working” condition before I stored it away. I was already an experienced electronic kit assembler at age 18 when I assembled all of the modules. I used terminal strips to create “bus bars” inside the module cabinets to conveniently provide the three supply voltages (plus ground) to all of the modules. Once I got to college at PSU I begged an Electrical Engineering professor let me use a frequency meter in a lab to calibrate each key of the keyboard to the proper pitch. I recently applied power to the cabinets and proved that the power supplies are working, but their output voltages will need to be recalibrated according to the manuals. I say that this unit is “working”, but I never really got it to make the sounds I was hoping for…

I fell in love with synthesizers as a teenager during the 1970’s because I was into both music and electronics. I desperately wanted to buy a MiniMoog (despite the fact that I didn’t have any keyboard aptitude or training) but, in any case, my family didn’t have that kind of money for something non-essential.

I discovered PAiA Electronics when their first 2700-series synthesizer kits were featured on the cover of Radio-Electronics magazine in 1973. The cover picture showed a fully functional synthesizer built from kits – except that the keyboard was made of hand-bent spring wires with buttons glued to the ends in order to keep the cost down. A few years later PAiA started offering professional 37-note keyboards and enclosures.

I bought the road cabinet and the power supplies first in 1979. I bought the actual synthesizer module kits as I could afford them during 1979 and 1980. I finally raised enough money to buy the (approximately) $100 keyboard/case kit in 1980.

This synthesizer contains the following cabinets and modules:

PAIA 2700/4700 MODULAR ANALOG SYNTHESIZER

"A few years ago I decide to take my 1974ish PAiA synthesizer and rebuild it. I researched components by consulting with Scott Lee of PAiA. I designed custom panels through Front Panel Express. To keep the engraving costs down I went with a minimalistic look that was reminiscent of PAiA yet totally original with a vintage vibe, especially the knobs.

I had Steve Wood, a former PAiA Tech from back in the day, do all the module refurbishing. Most of the major components on the boards were replaced & all ICs socketed. The audio path has upgraded caps and Burr-Brown op-amps. All front panel parts and hardware are new. Taking Marvin Jones’ advice, I replaced all the control voltage “pin jacks” with 3.5mm audio jacks. These are grounded so I could interface the PAiA with my other modular gear.

Multi-turn pots are used for VCO frequency tuning (they look like the pots on the old “Putney” synth!). The “bouncy” push button switches are replaced by momentary toggle switches and all of the switches are now toggle switches with vintage looking paddles.

PAIA 4700 Modular Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Vintage PAiA 4700 modular synth. As far as I can tell, these were DIY modular synths first released in 1981. These are somewhat quirky machines, and can produce some really interesting and creative sounds. Note that these use the hz/v CV standard (notably used on the Korg MS-20) rather than the modern v/octave standard. The two-part telex case conveniently closes up for easy transportation.

This unit comes with the following modules:

4710 - Balanced Modulator (x2)
4711 - 4/2 Mixer (x1)
4712 - Spring Reverb (x1)
4720 - VCO (x3)
4730 - VCF (x1)
4740 - Envelope Generator (x2)
4761 - Wing (x1)
4770 - Watt Block (x3)
4780 - Sequencer (x1)
Control Oscillator/LFO (x1)

"Rare and unique compact Paia modular synth in original folding case with handle. Most likely built from one of their kits in the late 70's or early 80's. (The included guide has a copyright date of 1976) I bought this a couple years ago as a project but never got around to it and no longer have the space. The synth turns on and the LED lights up but I do not have the proper cables so am not able to test everything in depth. Therefore this is listed 'As Is'. I've included pictures at various angles to show everything in detail so please check out all them.

Include in case :

This appears to be the first post showing what the PAiA 4786 looks like on the site. A search on 4786 only brings up one previous post from January of 2009. That post only featured a couple of pics of the circuit boards and instructions. See it for more details on the module.  If you do a search for 4740 you will see a ton of PAiA modules in systems, but not this one.

Moog Music to Demonstrate the Moog Modular at Synth City, Thursday, September 10

If you are in the Chicago area on the 10th of September, here's your chance to see a Moog System 35 in person.

"In anticipation of Knobcon 2015, Moog Music and Synth City are excited to host a one night only event with the Moog Modular Synthesizer. Representatives from Moog and Synth City will be on hand to demonstrate and discuss the Moog Modular, it's basic operation, and it's relevance to electronic music history. We will be aided by a System 35, the Sequencer Compliment B, and the 953 Duophonic Keyboard.

This is an incredible opportunity to get some panel time with an extraordinary instrument, and we enthusiastically invite all to attend. This will be an informal event aimed at education and access, before the system travels out to the burbs for Knobcon.

Light refreshments will be on hand, as will the regular inventory of Synth City and Rock N Roll Vintage." Thursday, September 10 at 5:00pm - 8:00pm in CDT at 4740 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60625.
