NAMM: Blofeld - Very Nice Indeed

follow-up to this post
Pictures taken by three crazy Waldorf betatesters: Dr. Georg Müller, Till "keep on turning these knobs" Kopper and Boele "SCD" Gerkes.

http://www.waldorfmusic.de
Note: Waldorf stated that they have NO part in this and may consider looking out for more sane beta-testers... :)

Note this is the last in the series of the unofficial Blofeld teasers from the three blomigos. :) Waldorf is one lucky company to have such support like this. They did a fantastic job! I have never seen this level of support and enthusiasm for a synth company before. I'm an old Waldorfian myself actually. They are a great company. The official release is coming up next. :)

Some notes and samples via Boele via the Waldorf list: "Here is an mp3 [samples-teaser1.mp3] showing a tiny bit what samples sound like in the BLofeld engine. Of course these sounds are my preferences which not necessairely have to be yours :D

Don't expect General Midi sounds from Waldorf please. The samples CAN sound like that, but the *real* fun is in mangling these samples with drive, filters, effects and blend them with wavetables and VA oscillators!

And THAT it does REALLY REALLY REALLY well! This mp3 is bare Blofeld recording. No external processing or FX. I was already VERY impressed with the Blofeld, but this option opens a whole new world. Boele takes his hat off for Waldorf. Again."

followed by:
"Two more sounds [samples-teaser2.mp3] using no wavetables at all. The second one has a nice phaser. Without using the phaser ;-) Again, no external FX or processing. Bare Blofeld."

Remember to click on the images for the full size shot. Yeah, I'm getting one...

Hmm... The local Migros is somehow not as flattering as Abbey Road. :) If you could only pick up synths at the supermarket...

The PPG Wave 2

Update: I put this up earlier yesterday but decided to move this up so no one misses it. Note this is NOT the popular PPG Wave 2.2 or 2.3, but the super rare Wave 2 that preceded the 2.2 and 2.3. This is a very rare and special synth. This is our chance to see and hear it.

via Boele Gerkes (Something Completely Different):
"After Wolfgang Palm had released the WaveComputer 360s series PPG came out with the PPG 2.0. An 8 voice, 1 oscillator digital wavetable synthesizer with analog filters (CEM 3320) and analog VCAs (CEM 3330 dual VCA). It's the forerunner of the better known PPG 2.2 and 2.3, but to my opinion these are quite different sounding PPGs, probably mostly because of the different filters used (SSM 2044) and different VCAs (CEM3360).

I know and own(ed) all the Waldorf wavetable synths too and have done lots of music with those (WAVE, Microwave 1, Microwave XT, the Q) but those are incomparable with the PPG series.

The PPG 2.0 sounds very intimate and to me it's the perfect mixture of digital and analog components in a synthesizer. I fell in deep love with it. And more famous band and people did too: Depeche Mode, Tangerine Dream, Robert Schröder, Gary Numan and others.

Yes, it's digital, yes it aliasing as hell, but ohhhhh..... everything gets polished again by those lovely filters...

All examples are PPG 2.0 only (plus reverb and delay). It's quite clear where some leads from Tangerine Dreams albums of the eighties come from...

Also the demo-tune is PPG 2.0 only. Not really a good song, but it shows a few sounds the synth is capable of. Since there is no midi on the PPG (yet...), everything is played by hand, so excuses for some timing glitches.

The PPG 2.0 on which all this is done, is on loan from a friend of mine. But I just bought one myself. Should arrive next week."

Something Completely Different - 25

Remember SCD and 25 Years? Well, the DVD is finally out. It will feature 25 years worth of music from Boele Gerkes' Something Completely Different along with exclusive videos. Here's an example of one (note I believe this one was done after the DVD and is not included but Boele ensures me the others are just as good if not better. What's great about the DVD and Boele's track listing is that he lists out the synths used. There's a ton of Waldorf on this so if you are looking for a good showcase of Waldorf synths, this is it.

Congrats Boele! I can't wait for my copy.

And, for the record, I did purchase it; this is not a promo for a free copy.

Ensoniq SQ-80 MP3 by Boele Gerkes

Title link takes you to a simple demo of the Ensoniq SQ-80 sent my way via Boele Gerkes of SCD. BTW, his 25 Years DVD is now available. More info on the site and a post with a shot of the DVD coming up next.

Waldorf Edition Demo

Title link takes you to One more demo via Boele Gerkes of SCD.

"This demosong uses only the plugins from the Waldorf Edition, i.e. PPG 2.v. Attack and D-Pole Filter all programmed by Wolfram Franke plus reverb and delay from Logic. The first part of the song focusses a little bit more on the Attack, the second part more on the PPG 2.v. Although my heart still lays with hardware synths, I have to say these plugins are sounding bloody good!"

Previous post with Attack samples. BTW, I swapped images for this post.

25 Years of SCD

I previously put up a post on Boele Gerkes SCD (Something Completely Different). Boele let me know he is considering something very, very cool for his 25 year anniversary of SCD - a double DVD with every recording he ever did along with notes for each track. The notes will include the gear used, the story behind the song and Boele's thoughts on the track. Boele is thinking about creating a pressed version with printed label, booklet, inlay, etc. However, to do that he would need at least 30-40 people willing to pay 20-25 Euro's for the DVD. If you are interested, let him know. Title link takes you to his site with more info - click on the image pictured here when you get there. Boele can sign me up.
