Buchla Easel Command 208C - Critters

video upload by TheTrackdriver

"I have completed my Buchla boat so I have three clones now that I have built - 266, 281 and 245. They came in kits with knobs and all but I customised mine so they would look more like my Easel. The chords comes from the Waldorf Blofeld and the bass from the Moog Sub 37.

The video is a mix of different animals and sceneries that I have filmed during the latest six months."

Eyesy Video Synth + Buchla Easel Command: A Test Run

video upload by Matt Lowery

"I’m working on a reactive visual setup with the Eyesy Video Synthesizer, and this was a test run. It’s not perfect, and there are some things I’ve already tweaked. BUT, it is kind of fun, so I thought I’d share.

It’s a fairly simple setup. I’ve laid a sheet of semi-opaque acrylic on top of an old TV, and am running Eyesy into its HDMI port. I think I’ll try a projector next.

Sound source is the Buchla Easel Command 208c, being sequenced by a Torso T-1. In the DAW, some granular stuff is added via Pitchloop89, and I also round-tripped the audio through a Joranalogue Enhance 2.

Hope you enjoy this weird little field trip."

Buchla Easel Command Modular Synthesizer | Multi-tracked Demo and Walkthrough

video upload by Sweetwater

Interesting seeing the Buchla used in this context. Be sure to check with dealers on the right for availability as well.

"In this video, Sweetwater‘s Jake Jenkins runs the Buchla Easel Command through its paces, which takes the 208c module and places it into an updated desktop synth featuring full MIDI/DAW compatibility. As a result, it mixes the exploratory ethos of Buchla design with the streamlined form factor of a desktop synth that doesn‘t depend on the complexities and space of a whole modular system. The Easel Command allows for tonal operation well beyond the limitations of 12-tone equal temperament, with a near-unlimited number of possibilities through control voltage regulation of nearly all parameters. This analog, mono synth uses a simple pair of oscillators, additive FM signals, and wave shaping to construct its base sounds, molded and manipulated into an infinite pantheon of sonic possibility."

Buchla Easel Command 208C - Orange

video upload by TheTrackdriver

"A piece of music recorded live. The two melodic stems come from the Buchla Easel Command 208C which is receiving MIDI from Steinberg Nuendo plus the internal sequencer. Some parameters are controlled by the Buchla 281 clone and the glide at the end by the 266. Chords are from the Waldorf Blofeld, bass from the Moog Sub37 and drums from the Akai Rhythm Wolf.

The blackbirds were filmed with a Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 with a Panasonic Leica DG 100-400 lens. The bird song was captured with a Røde VideoMic GO II."

Buchla Easel Command 208C - Glow

video upload by TheTrackdriver

"A semi-generative piece of music. I recently built a 266 Source of uncertainty clone from Samodular which is sending random quantised notes to the Buchla Easel Command 208C. The range is set by the pitch sliders on each oscillator. The Easel sends the pulser signal to the 266 which splits them up and send them back to each lo pass gate with some random stuff added.

The chords comes from a Waldorf Blofeld and the bass from a Moog Sub 37. I used some pedals and a Roland Chorus Echo RE-301 for effects and recorded everything onto a cassette tape (Marantz PMD 430 recorder)."

Additional Perfect Circuit listings

"This listing is for the Easel Command with serial no. 0710 0751; images are of the unit available for sale.

The Buchla Easel Command is the newly updated 208C in a standalone desktop form with MIDI and CV control. The 208C is the module itself for use in a Buchla 200e system.

Buchla’s own Joel Davel led the charge to create a new version of the legendary Music Easel instrument with more modular flexibility and independence, while also providing the means to easily interface with more devices, such as the various DAWs like Ableton and MIDI controllers, including the very expressive Sensel Morph. It’s still fully analog in its default configuration and provides the unique and exquisite Buchla experience with greater functionality at a lower cost.

Note: the Easel Command does not include the optional USB-A MIDI Host expander; this expansion must be purchased separately."

Live annotated performance: Buchla 208c Easel Command avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to explore how to use a patch that my 3 year old son put together. I am using annotations to try to teach some of my thought process when I'm making these improvisations. This is entirely live and unrehearsed. The goal of this piece of electronic music was to find musical ways to use the combination of the Pulsar to pitch with the Envelope Generator to Timbre in the complex oscillator. I was able to pull off his favorite sounds: Ambulance and Truck Motor. The combination of the two modulations allows me to create some interesting rhythmic concepts. This is a relatively simple patch and doesn't need many connections to get something that can sound extremely complex. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through a few eurorack modules that I will detail below. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!

Patch Notes:
Buchla 208c Easel Command audio to 4ms Tapographic Delay to Make Noise X-pan controlled by Intellijel Quadrax and Tangle Quartet. Audio from Eurorack output to Boss RC-5 loop pedal and Eventide H9 reverb.
Live patching: in annotations"

Buchla Tiptop 281t to Easel Command

video upload by Todd Barton

"One possible connection between the Buchla-Tiptop Audio 281t Quad Function Generator and the BuchaUSA 208c Easel Command using the UTL-1 Format Jumbler from Low-Gain. Clearly there are at least 10,000 more possibilities :-)"

Buchla 208c to Buchla Tiptop 281t 258t

"In my previous post used the Tiptop 281t to drive the 208c, this time I'm reversing the with the Buchla 208c pulser driving the 281t and different flavors of random voltages going to the 258t oscillators. Enjoy!"

Buchla Easel Command 208C - Luna

video upload by TheTrackdriver

"Generative music made on a Buchla Easel Command 208C. Effects comes from a Roland Chorus Echo RE-301 only. The program card in the background has a couple of resistors added and the Korg SQ-1 outputs random pitch variations.

I filmed the moon with a Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 with a Panasonic Leica 100-400mm lens."

Live annotated patching: Buchla 208c Easel Command AM focus avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to explore how to use some of the many possibilities of AM. I am live patching and using annotations to try to teach some of my thought process when I'm making these improvisations. This is entirely live and unrehearsed. The goal of this piece of electronic music was to show how to use different ways that AM can be used to create both rhythm and the faster audio rate (classic) amplitude modulation. I used cross modulation at the end to combine both sounds. This is a great use to be able to have rhythmic variations in what can otherwise be a static 5 step sequence.

Dune Soundtrack The One Hans Zimmer Cover all analog synthesizers, Moog, ARP-2600, Soma Lyra-8, DFAM

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a synthwave cover of the soundtrack for The One by Hans Zimmer from the movie Dune. I wanted to see if it was possible to get somewhat close to the spirit of the music using only analog electronic synthesizers with guitar. I am using some Eurorack modular with a Buchla Easel Command and Soma Labs Lyra-8 to create the drone, while the Moog Grandmother is covering the low brass parts, and the ARP-2600 is covering the string (cello and bass) parts. I'm using the Moog DFAM to cover the low drum hits. Finally, I'm using the Sequential Circuits OB-6 to do the end high strings.

I hope you enjoy! This was a fun exercise in sound design and trying to get the spirit of the orchestra into an analog synth orchestra idea."

"If you enjoyed this, please consider supporting my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ethanjamesmusic

Patch Notes:

Eurorack modular:
Instruo CS-L: using final outputs of both oscillators to a Make Noise Optomix to filter some of the high frequencies. The symmetry of both oscillators is being randomized by fluctuating voltage from a Frap Tools Sapèl.
Random Source Serge New Timbral Oscillator saw output to Serge Variable Frequency VCF. Low pass output to mixer. Filter frequency is being modulated by a Zlob modular Diode Chaos, while Q gain is being modulated by a Make Noise Wogglebug stepped output.
Make Noise Morphagene has a guitar loop playing D, and I'm using the knobs to make things change. Audio to an After Later Audio Monsoon (Clouds clone).
Make Noise Erbeverb in feedback mode to mixer.
All Eurorack audio to an Eventide H9 pedal doing reverb.

Soma Labs Lya-8 is in full drone mode with Hold turned all the way up. Most oscillators tuned close to a D with some variation. Audio is going to a Make Noise X-Pan modulated by an Intellijel Quadrax.

Buchla 208c Easel Command is providing more pulse-like ambience with random voltage changing the timbre very quickly. Audio to Make Noise X-Pan.

Moog Grandmother normalled patch with very slow attack and decay that is also assigned to the filter.

Moog DFAM using a very long decay with the two oscillators tuned a half step apart. Oscillator 2 has very low volume, so it's mostly contributing the attack sound.

ARP-2600 normalled patch with moderate ADSR modulation of the filter.

Sequential Circuits OB-6 using a polysaw sound being controlled by the Novation Bassstation II."

Live Patch: Buchla 208c Easel Command live west coast avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to make something more out there and noisy musically. I didn't rehearse this beforehand and was just following the sound. I am using a looper pedal to create many layers of the soundscape, eventually working towards creating an Easel roulette with the envelope assigned to the tempo. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through a few eurorack modules that I will detail below. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

Playful: Buchla 208c Easel Command live west coast avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"I am using the Buchla 208c music Easel Command along with the Make Noise 0-ctrl as a stand in for the 218 touch controller and wanted to continue exploring using a simple patch to create a large musical idea. This piece of music is called "Playful" and is for my son, who just turned 2. He has some medical issues, and we are so grateful that he is still with us. I didn't rehearse this beforehand and was just following the sound. I am still exploring using the pulsar into low pass gate 2 with the inverted envelope into low pass gate 1 to create different rhythms and have added pressure voltage to the complex oscillator modulation which is generating some nice harmonic side bands. I'm also using the envelope generator into the wave shaper, which is creating rhythms against itself with timbre. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through a few eurorack modules that I will detail below. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"
