SOS Guide to Choosing a Modular

It looks like this month's Sound on Sound has a feature article on choosing a modular. You can find an excerpt online. Tiny tiny pic courtesy of the site as well. They really need to have larger images. I'd probably post every one. :)

Note there is a new Cynthia Filterlab mentioned though no details. See the excerpt for more.

Pendulum Ratchet simple patch

Published on Jun 9, 2014 Todd Barton·166 videos

"Here is a very elementary patch for the Pendulum/Rachet. Hope this helps those just getting started with the P/R.

What I love about it is the ability to "generate a bunch of correlated pulses." These pulses can then, in turn, trigger a 281e or two and, a 266e and, of course, a 251e/250e. When trigging the 281e it, in turn, can create lots of different CVs to send all around your system.

Chris Muir's design is brilliant and an incredibly powerful addition to any Buchla system. Here's a link to the PR description of functions:

Burble

click here for a new Buchla 200e track from Chris Muir. Scroll when you get there; it's the first track on the list. You will find more under it as well.

"Burble is the combination of two little improvs that were done a few days apart. After I had recorded the less rhythmic, droney, layer I wondered if that rhythmic thing I had recorded a couple days earlier was in the same key and tempo enough to fit on top.

It wasn't, but I glued them together anyway. I go back and forth on whether to add a lead sound to this one. What do you think?

For this one, my system was augmented with a borrowed 259e waveform generator, which I used heavily. There's probably a lot less reverb & delay on this track than you think."

You can see one in the flesh here.

Update: via Chris Muir on the Serge connection: "The brains behind Salamander / SMS was Dennis Saputelli. Rex was peripherally involved, but mostly doing assembly."

Rex is the man behind the current Serge modular systems.

via Chris Muir via this thread on Muff's forum.
"Leader Kim Jong Il is a pioneer of experimental music, electronic music and non-standard use of musical instruments, Dear Leader Kim Jong Il is one of the leading figures in the avant-garden.

In DPRK the people are not like in US. In US the people make music for personal profit of capitalist, making lives of people miserable and dark.

But in DPRK all the people have deep love of Dear Leader Kim Jong Il and they have also love for each other. In DPRK the comrades make experimental musick to build the independant powerful prosperous country under care of Dear Leader Kim Jong Il who give warm fatherly love to the people like rainbow coming out of sun in the sky."

This will probably hinder MATRIXYSNTH making it in North Korea. If you click on the global map of my anniversary posts you will see North Korea is one of the few countries with zero visits to the site. Oh well... Maybe they ban Google Analytics? If anyone from North Korea is out there, post a comment! :) Or maybe not. I wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble. On a synth related note, check out this post on North Korea to make electronic musical instruments.

Flare 1532

YouTube Published on Jul 30, 2012 by davidryle "Demo of the Sputnik West Coast Random Source module. A clone of the 200 series Buchla 226 [Update via Chris Muir in the comments: "This is a 266 Source of Uncertainty clone. The 226 was a quad mixer."]. Way too much patching to describe completely. I was just having a go at trying out the various functions of the module. A more musical application of this device will be in order next.
Secondary effects include a low mix in of a delay and a variable panning.
Nine vco's, a Polivoks filter (Analog Craftsman), a Cyndustries QLPG, Sputnik VCS, Oakley Equinoxe and SSL Digital Delay are included in the signal chain.
The title is taken from the Solar CME happening at the time."

Eardrill Periodicity and ModuleModule Buchla

"Periodicity
The Buchla 281(e) quad function generators are the unsung heroes of the Buchla Electric Music Box. They perform all sorts of transient and cyclic duties. They are among my most-touched modules. That said, I still feel the need for some dedicated LFOs."

"ModuleModule
Buchla cabinets represent some expensive module real estate. There have been a bunch of little utility functions that I have wanted from time to time in my Buchla system, but gathering just the right combination of functions into a universally loved utility module seemed virtually impossible.
My solution? The ModuleModule

The ModuleModule is a normal Buchla-format module that implements a frame that can hold up to four "standard" mini-modules; "ModuleModule modules", if you will."

You can find more details on each via each link above. via Chris Muir of Eardrill on the SDIY list.

AH Bay Area Gathering 2006 via Electronic Musician

The synth gathering made the Electronic Musician blog. Our own Brian Comnes got a mention as well. Pretty cool. : )

"List member Brian Comnes, who coordinated the gathering, set up a raffle to raise money for the Bob Moog Memorial Foundation. The donated prizes included hats and shirts from RobotSpeak, a Metasonix TM-6, a gift certificate to Analogue Haven, and a vintage Korg MonoPoly synth (donated by sound-designer and EM author Nick Peck).

Personally, the most interesting aspect of an AHCali meeting is hearing what people have to say about their instruments, finding out what they like most about them, and hearing how they use them. I was particularly interested in learning more about the Buchla 200e, and Chris Muir was patient enough to explain some its deep feature-set to me."

Update: I realized I didn't give the celebrity list for the event. Here it is:

"Instrument designers visiting the show included Don Buchla, Dave Smith, Mike Brown (LiveWire), and Eric Barbour of Metasonix. Composer/performer Robert Rich was kind enough to bring along his large MOTM system. And San Francisco-based retailer Robot Speak was also present with plenty of Moog-related hardware and software items on display."

Fun with a Buchla 200e - Samples by Chris Muir

"Each of these was recorded live in a single pass. Some were then edited for length. Four channels of audio from the Buchla 227e System Interface were recorded into Logic Pro, along with a reverb send and a delay send. The two sends come from the 210 Signal Router and are, by necessity, pre 227e faders. The Buchla quad mains were mixed down to stereo in Logic. The delay, when used, is the Logic Stereo Delay, and reverb is either Space Designer or Audio Damage's Reverence." Title link takes you there.

Update: module list:
Top: blank, 266e, 210e, blank, 227e
Mid: 256e, 225e, 281e, 292e, 291e, blank
Low: blank, 249e, 261e, 261e, blank

SMS Synthesizers

Update via Chris Muir on AH:

"Actually the SMS polyphonic thing was closer to the original E-Mu Audity (not the Proteus in Audity clothing that EMu sold recently).

The SMS programmable polyphonic never saw the light of day, although it had a bunch of good ideas in it. The only thing that sort of spun off of that project was the SMS Voice 400.

I put scans of some of the SMS data sheets here."
