the pollard syndrum was one of the first commercially available electronic drums. this is the syndrum twin, sometimes called the twindrum - a beautiful drum synthesizer (brain) from 1976 which was part of an electronic drum kit. joe pollard was a session drummer working for the beach boys and other bands.
3. honky tonk music klone kit
sound demo of the quirky klone kit control module. made in the uk 1983 it was a cheap 5 voice alternative to other popular but expensive e-drum solutions of that time. all channels are identical except the snare channel which offers noise. the sound is very limited - followed up by the more flexible klone kit 2. since there's no demo of version 1 I decided to shoot a quick video with proper audio. retail was 299 ukp.

dr Böhm Digital Drums / 80s early groovebox

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"Quick and dirty video to showcase the Böhm Digital Drums i'm selling. [via this auction]

I just made this one to show the unit is fully working, both in performance and record mode.

For those who do not already know this unit it is usually described as the "German Linn Drum" but that is an understatement in my opinion. Sure you get some nice fat 12 bit drum samples and a sequencer that grooves a lot. But it is much more than that.

If you consider it simply as a drum machine from 1983 you would still be amazed by the features it provided back then: 32 user patterns each with fill, break, solo 2 bar and solo 4 bars = 180 possible personal composition in top of the 612 (yes) prerecorded ones, up to 32 bar length and 1/64 resolution, realtime or step recording, individual instrument volumes, automatic or random fills, per pattern or global tempo, sequencer mode, pattern copy and more...

But if you disregard the built-in 'arranger' then you're missing a lot from this great device.

It consists of a 4 part analog synth engine, fully programmable. No possible edition of the sounds but the 66 different presets do sound great. Some are even routed through a analog phasing module built around Panasonic MN3006 BBD chipsets.

You can record your own 5 tracks per pattern, with different bar lengths if you want, and even use the bass part to act as a simple mono bass synth with the provided keyboard !

Probably the most comprehensive unit of its time and genre."

Probably the most comprehensive unit of its time and genre.

This one has a very rare modification that provides individual outputs and volumes for the 4 synth parts.

It also has the cassette and trigger option fitted to save and load your patterns and tape sync to other gear.

There are more possible options and modifications for the unit, including 8 seperate outputs for drum sounds, MIDI, drum triggering and more.

It has been serviced and is fully working. Brand new battery was fitted so it's ready for some 40 more years of fat beats.

As it often is the case with such a drum machine you may experience double triggering with the pads but shouldn't be an issue.

specs:
* 36 rythms with 5 variations each = 180 patterns
* 5x Fill, 5x Break and 2 solos per rythm = 432 patterns
* 44 12 bit drums samples
* 30 pads
* 36 user rythm with 180 possible patterns (36 main patterns, 36 fills, 36 breaks, 36 solo 2 and 36 solo 4)
* up tpo 32 bars pattern and resolution up to 1/64
* 4 part analog synth engine with 5 tracks sequencer
* 66 analog instrument sounds
* Realtime or step by step recording
* independant volume for each instrument, saved per pattern
* global or per pattern tempo
* sequencer mode (36 sequences max)
* stereo output
* headphone output
* optional: 24 notes keyboard
* optional: 8 individual outputs
* optional: trigger and tape backup (fitted in this unit)
* optional: MIDI"

"Introducing" the DR BÖHM DIGITAL DRUMS

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

You can find additional posts featuring the Bohm Digital Drums here.

"Dr. Böhm Digital Drums in action - that's HERR DOCTOR to you thank you very much.

We love these when they work - we hate these when they don't work.
They're notoriously hard to service - this one was no exception.
It could be the most advanced auto accompaniment unit out there - change my mind in the comment section.

We thought Dr. Böhm Digital Drums could use an in-depth video of the auto accompaniment section alone.
The videos out there present this device as a "Italo Disco Machine" - when it's actually so much more.
It has 180 different auto accompaniment arrangements, and the 4 instrument voices have more than 60 individual preset sounds at your disposal.
The variety and range of stuff that comes out of this thing is really not bad - comparing it to other machines of the same era, the Solton Programmer 24 and the CRB Computerband 2000 - Dr. B comes out ridiculously more versatile.

We used almost no effects used in this video, the compositions are improvised one-takes that we came up with on the spot without preparation.

This specific machine was modified - it had six mysterious, extra potentiometers in place already when we bought it - but they weren't hooked up to anything internally - probably a botched project from the previous owner.
So we asked one of our techs to wire them up to modify the Bass, Mono 1 and 2 sections with individual volumes and the internal, on-board cut-off filter.

The result is not bad - for all types of Electro and Electronica obviously, Pop or Ambient textures for sure, even Musique Concrete-leaning experimentations.

Big thanks to Ludus Pinski here in Florence for wiring this up for us, and to Ondrej Pavelka in Prague Czechoslovakia, for sorting out the rest."

Dr. Böhm Digi Music 80ies Digital Drums Patterns and Variations

video upload by umusic6

"Check out the punchy and crunchy patterns of this ultra rare, compact 12 bit Sample Drum Machine, like the Linn Drum.
Additional bass in the intro by Behringer Pro-1.
This was actually a DIY kit offered in the 80ies. Samples are stored on two ROM chips.
Each Pattern has 3 variations which even have different Fills, Breaks, Solos. So, besides not programmable, lots of patterns to discover."

Rare 1980’s Dr. Böhm Digital Drums M. Drum Machine + pedal & additional eProm!

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The machine was built in Germany in the early 80s and is in very good condition.

CONDITION: It’s fully working. Cosmetically the two plastic removable covers have been re-glued by the previous owner because they were cracked (check all photos).

It includes also a beautiful foot pedal to control: fill / auto-stop / break / solo / etc.

It also includes a second sound eproms (untested!) with some more sounds!

There are 40 rhythm stored as samples in 2 different eProms.

· The first eprom includes the following 20 presets:

POP1 – POP2 – POP3 – POP4 – DISCO – REGGAE – ROCK - ROCK SHUFFLE – SLOW ROCK – FUNK – 5/4 SWING – 7/4 ROCK – SWING – JIVE – TWIST – MUSETTE JAZZ W. – LIMBO – BOSSA NOVA – R&R – BEGUINE.

· The second eprom (untested!) includes the following 20 presets:

POP1 – DISCO – MARCH - JIVE (R & R) – WALTZ - JAZZ WALTZ- TWIST – MAMBO –SAMBA – BEGUINE – POP2 - POLKA (MARCH B.) - FOXTROT – SWING - SLOW WALTZ - SLOW ROCK - SHUFFLE FOX - BOSSA NOVA- CHA CHA – TANGO.

There are also 3 variations of each rhythm (except for those in the bracket standing rhythms, since these are already a variation), a break, a solo and a fill in. So that makes a total of 60 rhythms, 60 breaks 60 fill ins and 20 solos.

An Auto Fill feature adds after the 4th, 8th or one random beat a fill in one.

The tempo is set with a "+" and a "-" button and changes back to an optimized pace when a new rhythm is selected. Do you want this avoided, you have to press the "Hold" Button before changing the Rhythm

For adjusting the volume, there is the silver colored pot button.

The sound is punchy and reminiscent of a Linn drum from the 80s!"

This might be the first one to be featured on the site. It was spotted and sent in via M Me.

"This is the original drum machine 'Digital Drums Music' from Dr. Böhm. The machine was built in the early 80s and is in very good condition.

There are 39 instruments stored as samples in 2 ROMs. The device plays 6 voices polyphon and includes the following 20 presets: Pop I, Disco, March, Jive (R & R), Waltz, Jazz Waltz, Twist, Mambo, Samba, Bequine, Pop II, Polka (March B.), Fox Trot, Swing, Slow Waltz, Slow Rock, Shuffle Fox, Bossa Nova, Cha Cha, Tango

There are 3 variations of each rhythm (except for those in the bracket standing rhythms, since these are already a variation), a break, a solo and a fill in.

Do you want this avoided, you have to press the 'Hold' Button before changing the Rhythm

For adjusting the volume, there is the silver colored pot button.

The output jack is designed as a stereo jack, that means, that some instruments are on right and some are on the left. In order to connect the drum computer with a monophone amp I will deliver a stereo-mono adapter.

The sound is punchy and reminiscent of a Linn drum from the 80s.

The Böhm Digital Drums is in a good condition and works 100%. The machine is clean, but has due to age some cracks on the user panel, which were glued (see photos for reference)"

Böhm Digital-Drums | German Linndrum | Free samples included

Published on Oct 26, 2018 Espen Kraft

"Dr.Böhm, the organ manufacturer released this 'German LinnDrum' in 1983 under the name Böhm Digital-Drums.
Extraordinary disco vibes can be had from these lo-fi, but still glittering drums. They come best to life when sequenced internally from this unit.
Together with the attached analog accompaniment unit and keyboard you can achieve instant Italo Disco/Giorgio Moroder hero status!

All the samples from the Böhm can be found here, in one big Wav-file 24bits, taken directly from the stereo out. All sounds recorded twice and you'll have to edit this yourself, but hey, they're free! :)

Published on Aug 7, 2018 Espen Kraft

"This is a quick teaser of the fantastic German 'Linndrum' called Dr.Böhm Digital-Drums from around 1983.
Fully programmable and with a optional keyboard attached that gives the most beautiful Italo/synthpop auto accompaniment.

This is all played live in the studio for a quick demonstration. Full video soon!
All sounds from the Böhm, except the Italo synthbell that is the Roland Alpha Juno 2. A splash of some reverb and compression and its off!"

BÖHM DIGITAL DRUMS Vintage Drum Machine 1983 | HD DEMO

Published on Feb 21, 2014 AnalogAudio1·125 videos

"(c) 2014 by AnalogAudio1

In the beginning of the video I added a little reverb from a Yamaha SPX900 on the drums, all other effects came from the Böhm itself.

The Boehm (Dr. Böhm) DIGITAL DRUMS is a rhythm machine / accompaniment from Germany.

The BÖHM DIGITAL DRUMS came in 2 versions:

1. as a classic drum machine
2. as a classic drum machine + analog accompaniment.

The latter you see in the video. The Böhm has preset rhythms and is also programmable. It has digital drum samples (13 bit) and analog sound generation for the accompaniment. On the accompaniment version, a keyboard can be attached, in order to set chords. It was also included in Böhm organs. The most units were assembled by the users themselves - it was also available as assembly kit. Multiple outputs, tape interface and MIDI were optional."

Vintage Digital Drum Machine

Anyone know what this is?

Update: be sure to check out the comments. Some info via Jan-Hinnerk: "The pic shows a Dr. Böhm (ahhh…those umlauts!) Digital Drums. Boehm (let's use this spelling for the sake of sanity) was a German company offering a range of electronic organs, both in assembled and kit form. In the 80s they ventured into (a) synthesizers and (b) digital drums, the first result being the Digital Drums. I can't remember exactly, but to my best knowledge the Digital Drums appeared in 1984 on the German market. It came with a variety of preset patterns plus offered you to program your own rhythms in realtime. A friend assembled one in kit form and made some mistakes on handling the ROM chips for some sounds, e.g. the handclaps sounded like someone hit his knuckles together, but apart from that it sounded very realistic for its time. I used it for my first 4-track-recordings in summer 1985. Big, chunky machine – really nice."
