DX5 playing Van Halen "Jump" synth riff (only) on a JX-8P

video upload by DX5

"A riff that came to my head on yesterday's live streaming, played on a Roland JX-8P, as a sound demonstration. The sound reminds quite a lot the original Oberheim synth.
Van Halen's "Jump" originally composed by Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen.
Synth riff performed here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara.
PS: DX5 is me, not that I am playing this on a Yamaha DX5 :-)"

DX5 Playing P. Lion "Happy Children"

video upload by DX5

"One of the finest italo dance songs ever. There are some variations intentionally done (i.e: the sequence starting at 00:36 or the second bar on the main riff (01:00, 01:08, 01:50, 01:59 etc) acting as watermark :-).

Gear used:
Left: Roland JP8000
Kurzweil PC1x
Right: Roland JX-8P (Square main lead)

Backtrack previously recorded from scratch, instrument by instrument, with my own synthesized sounds, including a Simmons SDS8 drum module for drums and Roland Promars for bass.

Original song composed by Paolo Pelandi.

Performed here by DX5 Jose María Bara."

DX5 Playing RAF "Self Control" (Laura Branigan vers).

video upload by DX5

"An excellent Italo dance anthem, composed by Raffaele Riefoli (RAF), Giancarlo Bigazzi and Steve Piccolo, covered here with the arrangements featured on Laura Branigan's version (which includes a lot of DX7 on it). The electric guitar doesn't fit much as on the original song; sounds a bit dimmed on the intro. I should have post produced it a bit more, but just did this on a hurry :)

Gear used:
Roland JP8000 (Slow attack filtered intro chords).
Kurzweil PC1x (Sampled guitar, fill chords, fast attack distorted sound)
Roland JX8P (filtered pad).
Emu Emax 1 (Programmed bell type sound, directly sampled from my DX7, including a second layer for the extra verse).

Backtrack previously recorded, track by track, on Pro Tools. Including Roland TR808 (intro drums with some random miliseconds delay) and a Yamaha DX7 for the bassline.
Peformed here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara."

Gear used:
Roland Promars MRS-2 (Jupiter 4 little brother)
Roland JP8000
Revox B77 MkII

Backtrack previously recorded on Pro Tools, then dumped to tape at 15 Inch Per Second, using the Promars for nearly all the sounds except kick drum and hi hat. Access Virus TI Snow also used.

Performed here by DX5 Jose María Bará"

DX5 Playing Alphaville "The Jet Set" cover

video upload by DX5

"'The Jet Set' Instrumental cover.

Update:

DX5 playing Alphaville "The Jet Set" (Take 2; recorded w/improved sound while streaming live)

video upload by DX5

"Yesterday I've recorded a cover of this song. Tonight I've just played it again on my Live Streaming and found out I am way more happy with the sound quality and balance than the previous version; thus I decided to upload it too. It does also include a few seconds before/after playing. (There is a barely noticeable jump at 00:28 that happened while broadcasting).
When I record an isolated cover, I do usually benefit from my old camera preamps/compressor. But when I am streaming live, I route audio (analogue) from my Pro Tools card output (Focusrite) to an audio card that feeds the streaming software, resulting in less sound make up. Also, audio levels were set different, resulting on this video.
Gear Used: Roland MRS-2 Promars, Access Virus TI Snow (choir wavetable layer triggered from the Emax1) , Roland JX-8P, Emu Emax 1 and Emax II.
Backtrack previously recorded, track by track, by me from scratch in Pro Tools, also including a Roland D-10, JP8000 and Simmons SDS8. All sounds synthesized by me or belonging to my libraries.
Original song composed by Marian Gold / Bernhard Lloyd / Frank Mertens.
Performed here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara."

"This is the first take, first time I played it on its entirely after practising section by section only, hence some variations can be found. Gear used:
Left: Kurzweil PC1x
Right: Roland JX8P, Emu Emax
Backtrack previously recorded by me on Pro Tools. All sounds were synthesized and sampled from my own synths, including a Yamaha DX7 II FD for the bell sound (which seems they used for the original track).

Original song composed by Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd, Ricky Echolette.
Performed here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara."

"(Note: These are some of the songs played originally in Pasadena Rose Bowl, not the whole setlist).
It was 7 pm in Spain when I realized it is Depeche Mode 101 anniversary. Then, I quickly set something: a live streaming playing some songs from that gig. No time to rehearsal or prepare anything; just practised a few times some song and this is what we got.

Thanks everyone joining the chat. It was fun to share this with you!."

DX5 Playing Alphaville "Forever Young" (improved take)

video upload by DX5

Previous version posted here.

"*** I don't use to upload the same cover within 24 hours but I was not too happy with the "Vocoder-ish" intro I did for the previous video. Never too late to improve. ***
"Forever Young" Instrumental cover. I tweaked the JX-8P filter live for the song intro which sounded quite accurate (I guess it was originally done on a Jupiter 8 and the JX-8P did the job well).
The vocoder style effect in the intro was finally made with the Access Virus TI Snow, sampled into the Emax (they might have used the PPG Wave for it on the original recording).
Gear used (L to R):
Roland JP8000,
Roland JX-8P,
Emu Emax.
Backtrack recorded on its entirely, track by track, by me using Pro Tools. No original audio was involved. Also used:
Access Virus TI Snow
Simmons SDS 8 for a couple of effects/drums.
Original song composed by Marian Gold, Bernard Lloyd, Frank Mertens.
Performed here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara."
