Dave Fredericks - Stinger - The ARP Family of Synthesizers Demo Record
video upload by PJ
"Nice track from an Arp Synthesizer company promo 7"."
Stinger ~ A discussion with Arp Instruments Dave Fredericks.
video upload by David Frederick
"A discussion with Arp Instruments Dave Fredericks on the song Stinger from the 'Red' Arp demo record. This conversation between David Frederick and his father David Frederick Sr. (Dave Fredericks) discusses the origins of this song, recording the iconic song on the Arp "Red" demo record, and using the Arp 2600, Arp Odyssey, and Arp Pro Soloist in the performance. A great conversation on this song, Arp history, synthesizers, and more!
Interview note & correction: "East Meets West" was recollected to being in 5/4 time signature when in fact, it was in 4/4. At the time of recording this interview, East Meets West was recorded 56 years ago!"
David Frederick ~ Stinger Reborn
video upload by David Frederick
"My dad who was one of the original founders of Arp Synthesizer, VP of Global Sales and Marketing, and visionary behind such Arp synths as the Odyssey, Pro Soloist, String Ensemble, Omni, Explorer, Axxe, and Little Brother, wrote this song back in the late sixties around the time I was born. He initially released it on his first album "Mr. Talent - Dave Fredericks" where he played the organ and my uncle Bruce played the drums.
My dad reintroduced Stinger on Arp's "The ARP Family of Synthesizers" record (the red record), using the Eminent Organ, Arp Pro Soloist, Arp Odyssey, and Arp 2600 with Cleve Posar on Drums.
One day I decided for fun and nostalgia to quickly whip up a new 21st-century arrangement of my dad's song and I thought I would share.
Hope you dig it!
David

THE ARP ODYSSEY...
"The Odyssey was ARP's primary lead/solo synthesizer. It was designed for musicians who wanted more control than the preset-oriented Soloist could provide, but didn't want the large size and patch cables of the 2600. Over its 8-year lifespan, the Odyssey went through three versions. The changes between them were sonic, cosmetic, and functional – to the point where musicians of today often consider the Odyssey to have existed as three distinct instruments."
To learn more about the ARP Odyssey, please visit our Music Makers & Machines page on Google Arts & Culture. Story by Mike Metlay with editorial contributions from Rich Formidoni, Mary Lock, & Dina Pearlman.

We will be having several releases. featuring footage from the 1970s of demos, two different ARP factories, Alan R. Pearlman, Phil Dodds, David Friend, David Frederick, and Tom Piggot! Not seen in 45+ years!
Included in these sessions will be other rare footage of Alan R. Pearlman speaking in later years (not in any other documentary) as well as contemporary interviews with ARP employees"
And via Dina Pearlman in the ARP Foundation mailing list:
Today is my father's birthday
Alan R. Pearlman would have been 97 today! Because he was born in 1925, he remembered the George Washington Bridge being built, the Great Depression, was a World War II vet.. he worked on the early NASA projects, saw the first person on the moon. And he built one of the most famous synthesizers in the world.
With celebrating my father's birthday we also recognize our future—the kids who love their STEM classes, the musicians who have aspirations to make music, or the filmmakers who wish to make soundtracks.
This summer we are trying to raise a minimum of $15,000 for the following projects:
ARPs for ALL - insurance, restoration and repair of instruments
ARPchives including scanning, digitizing and licensing rights to rare photos. See also: Google's Music Makers and Machines!
Our first residency at ARPs for ALL (estimated $10,000 for housing, transportation and engineering assistance) Grantwriter(s)
We will also be holding our Fall Synthposium and Fundraiser 2022: A Fifty Year ARP Odyssey!
READ the Synthposium Press Release
We hope you will consider making a tax deductible donation to The Alan R Pearlman Foundation
My father was a mentor. In his tradition, The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation is dedicated to preserving his legacy to inspire others, and to provide them with the tools to do so with our ARPs for ALL projects as well as our ARPchives that include Hot off the Press!
This year we have located some lost ARP tapes premiering on YouTube later today [above] (more coming later this summer) We have also located some rare photographs, but we have to purchase them, so this is part of our goals for this latest fundraiser.

Octave CAT SRM Synthesizer | Original 1977 Soundsheet / Flex-Disc
Published on Sep 19, 2019 Alex Ball
"A bit of a different upload this week, but I think it’s good to mix things up.
Whilst working on my documentary about ARP Instruments I got the opportunity to speak to David Frederick (aka Dave Fredericks) who was one of the key people who worked there from 1970 - 1976.
His full role will be told in the film, but in a nutshell, David’s background was as a performer, recording artist, demonstrator and regional sales manager for the Lowrey Organ Company. When one of his friends at a music store took in a strange new invention called the "ARP 2600" in 1970, David was asked to demonstrate it. A certain Mr Pearlman turned up to see his instrument demonstrated live and was impressed enough to snap David up to join him at what was then Tonus Inc.
David was heavily involved in the human engineering, patch books, overlays, soundsheets, point of purchase materials, marketing, demonstration and management of the sales teams and rose to the role of Vice President. He started the NAMM Jam (that still continues to this day) and is also the link between ARP and Eminent which resulted in the famous ARP/Solina String Ensemble that then lead onto the later ARP Omni and Omni II.
Post-ARP David went onto join Octave Electronics who’d released the CAT Synthesizer in 1976. The updated Series Revision Model (SRM) was released in 1977 and that’s where this recording comes from. David sent an original copy he had to me in the post and I asked if I could digitise it and upload it for posterity. So here we go!
There was a little nick in the soundsheet that meant that the very first sentence couldn’t be picked up by the needle but it was '…(missing)… for Octave Synthesizers' and then continued on where this digitised version picks up. I assume it was 'This is Dave Fredericks for Octave Synthesizers' but I can’t be totally sure.
Anyway, here’s an Octave article from Sound On Sound for those who want to delve deeper. https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/...
The Octave posters are taken from the wonderful Retro Synth Ads site:
http://retrosynthads.blogspot.com/
Thanks for watching!"
