NAMM 2024: Folktek Resonant Garden

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2024, Sonic State had the opportunity to explore Folktek's latest creation, the Resonant Garden. Jeff demonstrated the electro-acoustic resonating instrument which boasts an intuitive design that encourages tactile interaction. Users can tap anywhere on the instrument to generate sound, and the Resonant Garden sends it through three effects processors. Each processor features seven distinct effects, providing a diverse sonic palette. The effects can be seamlessly changed by tapping on the hexagon interface, allowing for real-time experimentation.

Jeff talked to us about Folktek's recent developments, with the revelation that the company has undergone some company changes, and Resonant Garden represents a flagship product in Folktek's reintroduction to the market under new management. The instrument promises not only the revival of some classic designs but also the introduction of newer models that were previously unreleased.

Resonant Garden Price: 959 GBP"

"If you're checking this out you probably know a little about it, if not here's some info from the site https://folktek.com/products/resonant-garden

These became really popular after this video of Trent Reznor using a similar instrument by Folktek [posted here] I'd say you can get the same sort of results from the Resonant Garden as Trent is getting in this video.

Disclaimer: I have used this instrument and while I thought it was very cool I didn't really understand it. From what I can tell, it works as intended, but it basically makes strange and unpredictable sounds so I can't say if it is working 'right'. I doubt it's very complex internally so if there was a problem it wouldnt take much to tweak it. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, its just that since it's basically a chaos device I can't vouch for what it's supposed to do."

Folktek Resonant Garden w/ Original Box

via this auction

"2018 Folktek Resonant Garden Standalone Synthesizer With Strings, Eurorack Patchable.

The Resonant Garden is an acoustic-electronic hybrid designed to create anything from beats and oddities to dense sound scapes.

The garden essentially utilizes three Alter circuits but each equipped with a mic pre-amp, and 4 garden (stringed) panels for generating acoustics. By plucking, rubbing, tapping or even bowing, those micro-acoustic sounds become amplified and effected by the Alter in any number of ways. In essence, the garden is a large microphone designed to pick up vibrations.

EFFECTS

There are two Alter 1 designs and 1 Alter 2. Each Alter 1 has seven different DSP effects which is selected by touching the copper hexagon:

1; long delay (capable of near infinite feedback looping)
2; tight, notated granular delay
3; huge plate reverb
4; shimmering reverb
5; distortion and multi-filter
6; pitch delay
7; stutter glitch

Alter 2 has the following effects:

1; analog delay
2; reverb with infinite capture and lp + hp filters
3; choral
4; palindrome reverse delay - backward/forward repeat
5; time stretch
6; pitch shift (notated semi-tones
7; time stretch glitch

CONTROL

On each of the Alter sections, the following is present:

- control for the gain of the mic pre-amp or any incoming audio.
- controls for mix, X, Y and filter as well as clock.
- all effects have a variation of a filter which may change effect to effect.
- X and Y control various rates.
- clock control adjusts the rate which controls the DSP which can drastically change the effect. In doing so it does slightly lower the quality of the output signal but the results are fantastic. This clock is not for synchronization.
- mix, X, Y and filter all have CV control inputs.
- Each control level or cv input is visualized on the control panel.

ACOUSTICS

Each garden panel is equipped with a contact mic. A contact mic is designed to pick up vibration. The mic pre-amp is specifically designed to deal with the frequencies of the contact mic by boosting certain frequencies and dulling others in order to optimize the sound quality. The mic pre-amp has a gain control so the level can be adjusted according to how you intend to play."

Ambient Soundscape in C Minor

Published on Feb 13, 2019 theianboddy

"Improvising an ambient soundscape in C Minor.

Tip Top One has a sample of an ambient bed prepared on my Serge system.

I'm then mixing in some analogue Ring Mod FX from the Cwejman FSH1 & Livewire Dalek Modulator (sitting in the rack to the right).

The Make Noise DPO is providing the bass & the Mutable instruments Braids the higher notes.

These are being triggered via semi random gates from Marbles which are driving the Rene sequencer for the bass & the Pressure Points for the high notes. I'm also manually playing the Pressure points which is being quantised from an Intellijel uScale.

FX are courtesy of the Folktek Resonant Garden which is off camera."
