John Bowen Solaris for Auction

"One of a small run of pre-order units of the near legendary John Bowen Solaris. For those who don't know, John Bowen started out working with Moog and became part of Sequential Circuits with Dave Smith. From there he went to work with Korg on such luminary products as the Wavestation and Oasys. The Solaris has been years in the planning and stems from Johns work at Sonic Core/Creamware. It's not really fair to simply call it a virtual analog synth as although it has modeled oscillators from Moog, CEM (SCI) and Wavetables and filters modeled from Moog, Oberheim, SEM as well as Comb and Vocal filters, it is much more than a VA. Semi modular in design there are hundreds of parameters and possible routings. Once central display and 5 sub displays help keep track of all the parameters along with 40 rotary controller knobs and numerous buttons!

For performance the Solaris sports a two output ribbon above the keyboard as well as the standard pitch and mod wheels and a joystick vector control. The keybed is velocity and pressure sensitive and the pitch and mod wheels are backlit, the colours can be changed but the case needs to be opened to do this. All internal processing is carried out at 96Khz, which means superior sound quality as well as some unusual modulations being possible, for instance the LFO's can easily go way into audio range.

There is so much more that can be said about the Solaris but it's better said on John's site.

John Bowen Solaris | Epic, Enormous & Expensive

video upload by Espen Kraft

"A flagship synth from 2011, the John Bowen Solaris is both vintage and modern at the same time. It's all digital, but it can mimic both old analogs as well as the 80s hybrid synthesizers and more.

Check out the synth here: https://www.johnbowen.com

The idea to use a Compact Flash card to store patches, presets, Wav-files and even the OS is a great concept in my opinion. Yes, it means you can loose everything if not careful, but as long as you have a backup of the card you can put it into another Solaris and boot it up to reveal YOUR Solaris.
Using the CF card does not mean the Solaris boots the OS from the card, you flash the Solaris from the card when there's a new OS update you want to install into the synth.
You do need to have the CF card present to have your presets and patches available though.

The demo song was made to showcase what I feel is the best part of the Solaris, the ability to mimic the classic hybrid synths like the Prophet VS, the PPG, and also synths like the Yamaha FS1R which uses formant shaping. The drum loop that comes up at the end is also out of the Solaris as you can create patches based off your own Wav-files.
The first part of the demo song is all recorded by hand, with a free flowing tempo. I also play an arpeggiated part on top of this.
The second part is recorded to tempo.
Some of the patches are part of this Solaris' preset bank, while some of the sounds are either edited presets or my own makings.
External FX used in the demo track: Valhalla VintageVerb, GFI Specular Tempus.
The demo track has been mixed and mastered using my well documented workflow and gear."

"Solaris Digital Modular Synthesizer - Overview We're on a mission...

From the beginning, the singular mission for Solaris has been to create nothing less than John Bowen's personal vision of the ultimate, dream-come-true synthesizer. A vision that draws upon more than three decades of experience in synthesizer design with legends like Moog Music, Sequential Circuits, the Korg Wavestation series and renowned software synthesizers for the original Korg OASYS and Creamware Scope platforms. And it's a vision to create a truly musical instrument masterpiece that is shared with some of the world's foremost synthesizer connoisseurs like film composer Hans Zimmer who is renowned for always seeking the utmost in sound creation capabilities.

OK, so what's the big idea?
The general concept behind the Solaris synthesizer is to implement something like a giant wall-sized modular system entirely in software where you can select among several completely different types of oscillators and filters, exquisitely modelled after the components culled from a variety of legendary vintage synthesizers of yesteryear and even some current virtual analog innovations of today. With up to four oscillators, four filters, four amplifiers, four four-input mixers, six envelope generators, one looping envelope generator, five LFOs, two vector mixers and still more of these software modules available in each program, the Solaris synthesizer becomes absolutely unrivalled in terms of versatility and programmability.

Aren't modular systems a complete pain to use with all those wires though?
The real wonder of the Solaris synthesizer is in how easy it is to accomplish all the routing, patching and programming of all these modules together. This is largely due to the abundant control surface of six LCD displays plus myriad knobs and buttons, and the exceptional way that they have been laid out to facilitate You'll be amazed and delighted at both the efficiency of the workflow and the wealth of feedback provided with the Solaris synthesizer for even the most complex of program configurations (and not a single patch cable in sight)!

With so much going on, what is the polyphony?
Even with a complex program utilizing all four oscillators, four filters, four mixers and healthy doses of modulation, you can still expect 10 note polyphony! This is because the powerplant inside the Solaris synthesizer that actually runs the software code consists of six third-generation SHARC DSP processors. Internally, all operations are 32-bit floating point and audio signals and busses run at 96 kHz for pristine audio quality.

Whether you are a synthesizer veteran looking for a modern musical instrument that lets you relive the majestic tones of legendary analog synthesizers or you are a sound designer exploring new sonic realms for games, film, stage or other media, we're confident that the unique and unlimited sound creation capabilities of the Solaris will be the synthesizer that lets you cut through all the clatter and instantly raises you up above the competitition. Now, isn't it time you got your hands on the Solaris synthesizer?"

"Up for auction is argueably the best sounding synth made to date, the somewhat rare and amazing John Bowen SOLARIS. The SOLARIS is a high-end digital synthesizer, which features state-of the-art digital synthesizer technology, yet sounds like classics of the past, or digitals of the present and future. Because of John's early successes working for Moog and Sequential Circuits, and Korg, John had an intimate knowledge of analog synthesis...but later on, he also became one of the best designers of digital synthesis with Creamware and Zarg. This made John uniquely qualified to combine all he had learned into the Solaris. This synthesizer is A BEAST to say the least, able to emulate most any analog or digital synth with ease, although John designed it to go where synths had not yet gone as well. And not only is the sound fat, thick, and ballsy in a very analog way, but also very capable of sounding digital in a analog way as well...very hard to hear some of it's sounds and not hear analog oscillators and filters in it somewhere."

John Bowen Solaris Test Drive by Carbon111

via Carbon111, via this VSE thread where you will find more images and info.

"I was privileged today to have given John Bowen's Solaris a test drive in my studio! Though its not quite finished yet and there are some re-designs in progress, I can honestly say its a programmer's as well as a player's dream!

It sounds absolutely wonderful and is very powerful! It took a few minutes for the interface to sink in, but once it did...wow! Flexible, deep and yet relatively easy to program due to the excellent UI despite the huge number of available parameters and choices. Most parameters are not buried in menus and are easy to access and tweak.

There are a ton of audio-rate modulations available on this thing, none of which generate any artifacts or aliasing at all...lots of FM possibilities, linear as well as exponential. The Moog-style filter was as warm and squelchy as one could want and could be run in other modes besides LP! The "Obie" clone was a good state-variable emulation. The oscillators were plentfull in both quantity and variety. Each patch has a unique architecture, essentially a massively parallel yet integrated "multi" unto itself.

I was suprised at how organic and non-digital it sounded! A one-on-one "taste test" against my analog gear proved this thing has that elusive low-end "beef". Its no slouch as a complex wavetable synth either, holding its own easily against my Waldorf Microwave XT and Ensoniq Fizmo.

You can do FM, physical modeling, subtractive, wavetable and vector synthesis on it as well as the warmest VA I've yet heard.- I'm really blown away! Time to start saving...or figuring out what will have to go"

Also check out the official John Bowen Synth Design.

Some specs via this thread on the John Bowen Synth Design Forum (BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE THREAD FOR MORE including clarifications):
"The hardware Solaris has the equivalent of approximately 6 Scope boards (the 14 DSP cards), so 6 x 14 = 84 Scope generation DSPs - but remember, you would have to be running your Scope Project at 96 kHz as well...

We have lots of software to finish, so I can't report exactly as to the polyphony count, but here are some of the other specs:

John Bowen Solaris & Oberheim Matrix-12

Two pics via El Estereo on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge: "Like father, like son...."

Two massive synths with similar editing displays. Both coveted and both revered as pinnacles in the synthesizer world. John Bowen started his career with synths as a Moog technician back in 1973. In 1976 he met Dave Smith of Sequential Circuits and began work with him. You can read up on some of John Bowen's history on the John Bowen Synth Design website here.  See this post for video of John talking about the Solaris and his history at a PNW MMTA SynthFest in 2011, and this post for a video of John discussing his days at Sequential Circuits back in 2006.

John Bowen Solaris - Modulating the Decimator with Envelope Generator

Published on Aug 6, 2013 zibbybone·124 videos

"So I went to GC today to 'test drive' the King Korg to get my free T-Shirt. I was having lots of fun controlling its decimator in real time. I asked the sales person if you could control it from an EG and the reply was 'I don't think so'.

Ah, but you can with the Solaris. Here's a simple patch using the 'Jaws' waveform (supersaw) while I tweak EG2 to modulate the decimator. Not anything super musical, but just a quick demonstration of just a taste of the Solaris' modulation capabilities."

John Bowen SOLARIS Demo of tweaking, sound design and some patches

Published on Aug 30, 2019 synthlegends

"The John Bowen Synth Design SOLARIS is almost 8 years on the market. Since 2012 there were approximately 380 units produced. The 7th production run just finished and is sold out.

The SOLARIS is a very sophisticated digital virtual analog synthesizer with 4 oscillators, 2 so called rotors, tons of waveforms, filters, mixer routing possibilities, 5 LFO and 6 envelopes. It contains about 1200 parameter and countless routing possibilities. It is like a polyphonic modular synthesizer which is capable to recreate all classic vintage synthesizers and also never heard digital stuff. With the SOLARIS a programmers dream became true. The GUI is quite logical thanks to 5 text displays for each section in the signal path plus a big graphic display.

My new purchased SOLARIS with Serial Number 356 has a new hardware feature, OLED Text Displays. In the meanwhile the OS is "grown up" and there are also more than 2000 user presets programmed by a big community of sound designers.

In this video I only scratch on the surface. In the beginning I want to demonstrate a bit the different sections (oscillator, filter, envelops, LFO) by tweaking an anlog sounding JUPITER style Pad. Then I demonstrate a couple of typical analog leads, bass, sync sounds and some digital sounds to show the wavetable section. In the end I play a gorgeous string patch demonstrating some further routing capabilities in the mixer section, where you can layer 4 parts.

I did not use any additional effects, mastering, compression or eq. You hear only the SOLARIS from Out 1 and 2 directly to the audio interface.

I hope, you enjoy this video, which only shows a very little part of this unbelievable flexible synth. I am very happy to read your comments.

Cheers, Rüdiger"

John Bowen Solaris Sound Samples

John Bowen has uploaded new audio samples of the Solaris, specifically the 'Weird Rotor' samples 5 and 6 in the player. The following is a description of what's in the player. Click here to check them out.

"Here's what I wanted to show:
1. AM example - Solaris_AM1.wav.
This is an extremely simple patch, made up of 2 oscillators, no filters, 2 envelopes, and 2 LFOs. Osc 1's amplitude is being modulated by Osc 2, whose output is shaped by an envelope. (The 2nd env is the Amp EG, of course). Since you can modulate each input of a mixer, I have a mixer with Osc 1 coming into 2 of the 4 inputs. The first input is getting modulated by Osc 2, and the second input is modulated by an LFO. Another LFO controls panning.

2. Lowpass filter with polymod - http://www.johnbowen.com/WavDemos/Solaris_LP11.wav.
This just because it's an old favorite of mine from my Prophet 5 days. 2 oscillators feeding the ladder-type Lowpass 24 dB filter, with medium resonance. The filter cutoff is modulated by 2 LFOs, one of which is tracking the keyboard, while the other a very slow sweep. A third input provides an envelope to the cutoff. Again a bit of Pan modulation by another LFO.
3. Panning Modulation at audio rates - http://www.johnbowen.com/WavDemos/Solaris_PanMod.wav.

Again, another very simple sound, using 2 oscs (sine waves), one with a slight bit of pitch EG (and no filter). The point here is to show how nicely audio rate modulation of the Pan position works - something you won't find on your typical synthesizer. As I hold down the F major chord a few bars in, I start to adjust the Coarse tuning of Osc 4, which is modulating the Pan. At first it's at -60 semitones (sub-audio range), and then I gradually (more or less!) raise it all the way up to +60 semitones. At the end, I again grab Osc 4's Coarse frequency and quickly drop it all the way back down while holding a higher chord.

4. Someone requested to hear something bright and buzzy, or lots of resonance.
Here's something using 2 filters in parallel - the MiniLP and the OB Notch filters: http://www.johnbowen.com/WavDemos/MiniLP+OBNotch2.wav.

5. Rotor FX - WeirdRotor1.wav.
This is a single note held, showing the Rotor module playing through the 4 oscillators. Each one is a bit different, with slow LFOs modulating the pitch of each. Osc 1 is set to the MultiMode osc, using the S&H waveshape. Changing the frequency of this oscillator varies the clock rate of the noise generator. Osc 2 is using the SuperSaw, Osc 3 the Morphing Saw, and Osc 4 is playing the (new) WAV Osc with a test sample. Everything is being fed through the (also new) Comb Filter.

6. Rotor FX polyphonic - WeirdRotor1Poly.wav.
Here's the same patch played polyphonically, at different ranges on the keyboard. I thought it might be interesting to have a 'non-traditional' example to hear.

The Solaris can produce very complicated things, but I wanted to start out with very basic, simple sounds. Now that I've got the basic recording process down, I'll get some more examples up within the next few weeks. (I'm also hoping to have some videos of basic operation available).

-John Bowen"

John Bowen Solaris Review & Audio Demos

"'The Solaris is a fusion of the most important synthesizer designs of the past 40 years'

It may sound presumptuous: the John Bowen Solaris is in some ways the epitome of synthesizer design since the 70s. Let’s see … there are various oscillators to choose from: Minimoog, CEM, Microwave, Prophet-VS, Wav (samples). Or consider the filters: Moog, Oberheim, SSM, multimode filter, comb filter, vocal filter … The modules are a journey through synthesizer history. Sure, it’s all purely digital, but the sound quality is excellent. Impressive."

SOLARIS (John Bowen) Synthesizer - 100 Brian Kehew Presets

Published on Apr 2, 2018 OFR

"Here is a quick demo of the 100 custom sounds I programmed for John Bowen's amazing synthesizer, the Solaris. It's a fascinating system, a brilliant design with astounding sonics (although YouTube audio won't represent the full audio quality.)

I was finding so many people were doing 80s analog-synth type sounds (which are common elsewhere already) so I wanted to show a wider range of the possibilities it offers. I still don't understand all of what the Solaris can do - I'm still learning it - so there is more to come for sure. There are NO samples used, just pure synthesis modes. Enjoy!

** Thanks to Curt Anderson for the camerawork and Todd Lampe for editing..."
