Sounds of the Roland JUPITER-Xm Synthesizer

Published on Jan 23, 2020 RolandChannel

"Since the release of the JUPITER-4 in 1978, the name JUPITER has marked the pinnacle of Roland sound and playability. Roland synthesizers with the JUPITER name carry our most advanced sound technologies, are supremely playable, and are built from premium materials.

JUPITER-Xm combines classic Roland design and premium build quality with a powerful new synth engine. It faithfully recreates sought-after instruments from our long history of genre-defining sounds. And with multiple layers, loads of polyphony, and deep hands-on control, you can craft huge, spacious sounds that have as much sparkle as they have warmth and punch.

In this video, David Åhlund introduces the Roland JUPITER-Xm with an overview of its design, a demonstration of the Model Banks that include JUNO-106, JUPITER-8, JX-8P, a polyphonic SH-101, XV-5080, RD piano and more. There is also a demonstration of the new i-Arpeggio, designed to provide immediate inspiration with drums, bass and more at the press of a chord. David also demonstrates some of the effects on board with over 90 to choose from.

This video also takes a look at the new ZEN-Core Synthesis System which embodies nearly five decades of historical know-how gained through the development of our most famous analog, digital, and virtual analog synthesizers."

The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story and Why Roland Has No Plans for a New JUPITER-8

I don't like to critique but I thought the following was a little funny (also see my note on Behringer below):

"We are very aware of the very strong passion that synth fans have for the JUPITER-8, and some continue to wait for us to introduce a true analog version. This is something we do not plan to do. Our founder Mr. Kakehashi always said, 'Never chase a ghost', and I really understand his meaning. 'Chasing the ghost' of the original JUPITER-8 or TR-808 does not make sense as we will never catch them, and this effort would not align with our vision for the future. Roland has developed many legendary products throughout our history that came from our drive to always design the future by applying the latest technology and our unique know-how from each era. This is our DNA which will never change."

Preceded by:

"Different from the base Virtual Analog of ZEN-Core, the ABM-powered 'Model Bank' synths in the JUPITER-X and Xm reproduce the total character of specific vintage synths including the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, JX-8P, and SH-101, all with incredible precision. For these synths, we did deep behavioral analysis of elements such as the filter’s curve, range, and response speed, which are different for each model, of course. We even recreate characteristics including oscillator drift driven by temperature changes- we actually put a physical temperature sensor inside the JUPITER-X and Xm to help with this!"

The above is quoted from The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story posted on Roland's site. There's more to the post, of course, so do check it out, but what I thought was a little funny was the 'Never chase a ghost' quote. They are clearly doing just that, only in the digital realm, not analog. But... they have ventured in analog with the JD-Xa and JD-Xi. Do I think Roland should clone the Jupiter-8 and their vintage analog? No. For one reason: Behringer. Behringer would just put them under with cheaper models, so if I were Roland, I wouldn't bother. I'm guessing the digital clones are more cost effective as well. I'd stay focused on new products just like they are doing now.  Seriously, Behringer has made it so no company will ever bother cloning their previous products.  I heard that Behringer's goal is to not only offer clones of vintage synths, but to become the largest synth manufacturer for both vintage and new designs.  Simply put, the only way to compete will be to create gear that users want and Behringer does not offer for less.

JUPITER-X/Xm O.S. 3.0 with NEW Sound Engine!!!

video upload by gattobus

"Quick demo of the new native sound engine that is available exclusively for Jupiter-X/Xm in O.S. 3.0 update. In this video I'm playing some of the factory scenes that I created exclusively for this amazing instrument.

Built on the classic JUPITER heritage, vintage analog sound has been modernized with new capabilities and creative options.

4 Oscillators with new waveforms, 2 LFOs, 5 Envelopes, Double XMod and Sync options, etc... A new iArpeggio is introduced, with new patterns and PROBABILITY styles.

O.S. 3.0 also doubles internal memory for user scenes and tones!

Download it for free, following the links below:

Jupiter-X: https://www.roland.com/global/support...

Jupiter-Xm: https://www.roland.com/global/support..."

Update notes:

[ Ver.3.00 ] APR 2022

Please refer to the "JUPITER-X Owner's Manual Ver. 3.0 and later" and "JUPITER-X Reference Manual Ver. 3.0 and later" for detailed information in the [ Owner's Manuals ].

Additional Functions

The model "JUPITER-X" has been newly provided as a preloaded model.

The model "JUPITER-X" is a new model that takes the model "JUPITER-8" as its motif and is designed with the aim of achieving the ideal analog synthesizer configuration. Through such moves as adoption of four oscillators, seven types of waveform selection, implementation of oscillator pan and oscillator delay, adoption of a variety of velocity sense functions, and more, this provides new vintage synth expressiveness that transcends the boundaries of vintage synths.

The functionality of I-ARPEGGIO has been extended.

I-ARP TYPE setting values have been increased from 55 to 65 (10 more) and I-ARP RHYTHM setting values have been increased from 44 to 65 (21 more).

Mode switching has been added to enable easy switching of simple arpeggios and step sequencers for each individual part.

It is now possible to change styles and variations for each individual part by using I-ARP and the ARP mode.

A Probability function has been added. This makes it possible to assign a probability to the sound production of each note, and also enables changing its extent through interlinking with I-ARPEGGIO.

New preset sound content has been added (scenes and tones).

The number of scenes and the number of user tones have both been increased from 256 to 512.

Functionality Improvement

Various improvements to the user interface have been made.

When setting parameter values, a value list can now be displayed by pressing the [ ENTER ] button.

The structure of the view displayed when the [ MENU ] button is pressed has been reorganized.

The naming screens for scenes, tones, and the like have been improved.

The order of Z-Core Tone parameters has been reorganized.

Bug Fixes

The following bugs were fixed.

Minor bugs.

Roland Jupiter-X, Xm, Pros & Cons, Cons, Cons

Digiphex Electronics

"Warning: I didn't like it."

---
He focuses mainly on the hardware interface and not the sound. The loud keyboard play was odd... Any Jupiter-X owners want to chime in?

For what it's worth, I owned a Jupiter-8, JX10, two Juno-106's, JX-3P, and an Alpha Juno. I picked up a Jupiter-Xm for the portability and I am happy with it. That sound is there and the interface is not difficult to work with once you understand it. It sounds the same as the originals to me, just turn down the effects. The aging and warm up emulation is a nice addition. BTW, the vintage Roland synths the X and Xm emulate were pretty spot on with tuning. Roland's tend to have a very in-tune and clean sound compared to many other poly analogs of the time. The Jupiter-8 has a certain glow and fullness about it that the Xm captures. Other synths like OB-Xa and Prophet-5 have a different character about them, kind of like an IPA compared to a lager or pilsner. An interesting addition to the X and Xm BTW, are the Moog and SCI filters. It would be awesome if they added additional models - Oberheim (4 and 2 pole on the OB-XA and SEM state variable), Yamaha CS, Korg MS20, and of course the classic TB-303 diode ladder filter. Alesis added a slew of filter types with the ION and Micron.

Roland JD-800 Model Expansion on JUPITER-Xm - Quick Review in Description

video by Robert Saint John

"Roland #JD800 on #JUPITERxm - Quick performance, all sounds live on the Xm and from the new JD-800 Model Expansion installed on it (standard Xm drum track).

I had my doubts, but the JD-800 Model Expansion is very worthy of the JUPITER-X/Xm. It may not have analog roots, but it does have character and presence. I didn't expect it to map well to the JUPITER-X (let alone the Xm) controls, but Roland did an outstanding job here. After a few hours, it's quite smooth, especially with our friends 'Shift' and 'Function.'

Most important, I think it really brings an additional class of Tones to the X/Xm that were not there. There's a crisp-almost-crunchy feel to many of the waveforms that are undoubtedly digital but still really useful. And the new multi MFX effects? *chef's kiss* There are some gems in there that will take some time to explore, and it will be great to use them with other Models as well.

Five stars, highly recommended."

JUPITER-Xpert - Is This the End??! What's in the Box??!

video by Robert Saint John

"Well, it’s been fun. But the time has come for me to move on to bigger things...

Yes, I finally did it! I got the JUPITER-X.

I've been reassessing my studio and music needs, and I have sold off a lot of gear these past few weeks. The JUPITER-Xm has been my go-to synthesizer for 18 months now, but I wasn't using it with my big controller (Novation SL MkIII) any longer. This new JUPITER-X will take less space than the Xm and an unused controller in my studio. And the price on the X is great right now with a $300 rebate from Roland (until the end of June 2021). I continue to be pleased with the direction Roland has taken with X/Xm, so this will be a lifetime synth for me.

NO, the Xm is not really for sale. YES, I will be doing at least one video comparing the two; the workflow, advantages/disadvantages of each, and so on. It’s always bugged me that my Xm-based tutorials might be lost on X users, so I’d like to take some time to address that.

Longer-term I have something else in mind and, for that, it seems important to have both. Also, I've been deeply back into piano lessons and practice, and I decided that I wanted my favorite polysynth to have full-size keys after all.

I truly appreciate the support and interest, and hope to have exciting things to share soon!

Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 by Richard Strauss. Performed with ZENOLOGY Pro using ZEN-Core and Model Expansion Tones"

MidiTraC - Polyphonic Step Sequencer, MidiLooper & Pattern Generator

video uploads by EKL Alfred Labs

The above is a playlist starting Jul 7, 2022 and going back to Jan 24, 2019 featuring various stages of development.

The following is the description for the first (and latest video) followed by some details from the MidiTraC Manual.

MidiTraC - MidiLooper & StepSequencer...

1) using generator (C harmonic minor) to make a Init Sequence with Prophet 6
2) add some Juno60 sounding stuff using Step Mode
3) delete some Events - Live Eraser
4) Drums (Jupiter Xm) - Step Mode
5) recording Bass & Pads from G2X - Live Mode
6) mute some Tracks
7) add another Bass (Jupiter Xm) Track - Step Mode
8) small Melody by MicroFreak - Live Mode
9) showing Track Transpose...

From the user manual:

MidiTraC v1.01
++ 4Players ++

Preface:
Sometimes developer are so deeply connected to their project that they don't reach customers, so they don't manage to transport the real message. Hence this preface, which should explain the basic idea behind the concept of MidiTraC.

The actual inspiration comes from a video showing "Vince Clarke" and the "BBC Computer". Based on this, plus a lot of imagination and feedback from beta testers, the current version of the MidiTraC sequencer was developed.

The initial spark was the idea of the polyphonic step sequencer, which is often found in hardware synthesizers. Unfortunately many implementations are only half-hearted and have many limitations (monophony, number of steps or complicated impractical handling). MidiTraC tries to counter these shortcomings.

MidiTraC combines different device classes:
+ Midi Looper (Notes & CC Data)
+ Step Sequencer (polyphonic)
+ Conditional Sequence Generator
+ Note Editor & Modifier
+ Arpeggiator

MidiTraC can handle 16 tracks, each track is assigned to a fixed midi channel. The tracks can be independently muted, quantized, deleted or transposed.

All midi events, that arrives at the midi input are recorded. Therefore all settings have to be done at the midi input source, e.g. the choice of the midi channels. Usually the input source is a Midi-Keyboard, but it can be everything that send midi notes or CC data.

The principle is comparable to an audio Looper, with the difference that the amount of data is not generated by the time axis, but by the number of recorded events.

The device works on the basis of five slots, each slot can handle patterns up to 1024 midi events (a pattern manage 16 midi channels).

Notes can be generated, recorded live or step by step. An infinite number of overdubs are possible, each of these overdubs can have different lengths [Loop]. The longest recorded loop, represented here by the total lengths [Bars] (from 1 to 999 Measures).

Every operation can be done while running, so patterns can be loaded, saved, copied or merged to/from the Slots (for now, there are 128 memory locations). There is always one [Undo] step possible. [See the user manual for more].

Quick Specs:

+ 16 tracks, 1024 events (notes / midi CC) per pattern
+ 5 patterns with variable pattern lengths: 1 to 255 bars
+ Scales and quantization on recording or via ChannelQuantize
+ 18 quantization grids 1/64 - 1/1 (including triplets & dotted notes)
+ Note Editor (Microtiming 1/192, Pitch, Velocity, Duration, Channel)
+ unlimited smart overdubs with variable loop lengths (consolidate)
+ polyphonic step input with individually adjustable gate lengths
+ Pattern Generator (polyphonic / monophonic / drums / scales)
+ individual transposing / muting (live/lock) for all midi channels
+ Merge / load / save while sequencer is running...
