A Saint Valentine's Day theme

YouTube via attorks

"Happy Valentine's Day to you all. For this occasion a somewhat romantic theme. Row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 drives the Synthesizers.com Modular, row 2 the self built Modular and row 3 the Creamware MiniMax ASB. The solo's are performed by the AKAI AX80 with the P1 piano preset and the Korg 900PS wih the Voice and Clarinet presets. The cello like bass is performed by the Clavia Nord Lead 1."

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

"Superb condition with just a few minor nicks, just one slider cap missing, output is very clean. This is the very rare original WHITE livery version, I've never seen any others, I usually only come across the yellow livery version, most looking pretty battered and rarely fully working.

The only thing I need to tell you about this synth is that the power is permanently fixed on, so you have to turn it off at the mains rather than on the synth, other than that she is in beautiful physical and working condition, all knobs, sliders and other functions, including it's very unique touch bar, are all fully working as they should and the output is as clean as a whistle."

Korg 770 - The Smut Box

video upload by Alex Ball

"A look at the Korg 770 monophonic synthesizer from 1976, an incredibly grubby sounding instrument that I've dubbed 'the smut box'. In this video we explore what it sounds like and why.

0:00 Intro
1:23 Demo1 - Ring Me
2:10 Demo 2 - Tweedle Dee
3:05 Demo 3 - Sister Transistor
4:04 Why it sounds the way it does 5:36 Demo 4 - Distant Traveler
6:34 Summary

A note: I said in the video that this synth was the last of the first generation of Korg monosynths (miniKORG 700/700S, maxiKORG 800DV, SB100, 900PS) but have since realised that the M500 came out in 1977 that does still use the 'traveler'. However, that is a very limited preset synth and I'm sure you can see what I mean by the lineage from miniKORG to the MS range.

Thank you to the owner of various instruments used."

A fast theme

YouTube via attorks

"An uptempo piece of sequencer music. The first sequence you hear is performed by the Synthesizers.com Modular using the CGS Steiner filter. The second sequence is performed by the MFM Modular using the Synthesizers.com Q150 filter. The AKAI AX80 is on chord memory so I can use one note to play chords. The AX80 also controls the pitch of the Synthesizers.com sequence. The difficulty was that the scale to play the chords and change the Synthesizers.com pitch (in Cm) was 2 semitones below the scale for the solo (in Dm). But I didn't wanted to scale down the Doepfer MAQ16/3 which would involve retuning all the knobs. The solo is performed on the Korg 900PS with the Funky Trumpet preset. In the last section the pitch bend switch is engaged."

An arpeggiated theme

YouTube via attorks

"The first theme with the Waldorf Q Keyboard. At first you hear the sequence from the Synthesizers.com Modular driven by row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3. After that the volume is raised for the sequence from the self built Modular driven by MAQ's row 2. Then the arpeggiated sound of the Waldorf Q Keyboard, which is MIDI synchronized from the Doepfer MAQ16/3, comes in. This arpeggiated sound reminds me somewhat of the 'Black Noise' album by 'FM' from some 30 years ago, for example the track Aldebaran. The strings are performed by the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the solo is played on the Korg 900PS. I had to shorten the video somewhat because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video can be seen or downloaded from my website after 12 april."

A theme for my Muse

YouTube via attorks

"I dedicate this theme to my Muse. I tried to keep the theme modest and subtle like my Muse. At first you hear a sequence from the Synthesizers.com Modular driven by row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3. After that the VCF frequence is raised to hear the sequence from the self built Modular driven by MAQ's row 2. The 3rd sequence comes from the Creamware MiniMax ASB which is driven by MAQ's row 3. The strings are performed by the AKAI AX80 and the solo's are played on the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the Korg 900PS (Accordion preset with Traveler on 3.5).

I had to shorten the video almost 3 minutes because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video is 12:42 long and you can see or download it from my website."

A minimal theme

YouTube via attorks

"This was a very quick one. From the initial idea, which started with fiddeling around with the sequencer, it all took less than an hour and the video was in one take. The main 8 step sequence is coming from the Waldorf Q Keyboard; the Doepfer MAQ16/3 is synchronized to that. The Doepfer drives the Synthesizers.com Modular with the 2nd 8 step sequence you hear and the self-built Modular with the 3rd 8 step sequence which has a sort of Roland rhythmbox sound. Some simple improvised solo's on the Nord Lead 1 and the Korg 900PS completes this minimal theme."

"The Tremolo effect and the “repeat” switch are not working. Also, from time to time (but not very often) it goes a semi-tone out of tune for about a second.

I guess it could be fixed by replacing the right capacitors.

All the rest is working perfectly. All the switch and knobs were cleaned and lubricated.

The wooden veneers were in poor condition, so a sticky wood-like veneer was added.

This was bought for a university project only, I don’t need it anymore so it’s just taking space. These are quite expensive even with defects (like mine)."

A simple theme close-up

YouTube via attorks

"This video has close-ups so you can follow most of what is happening. The difficulty was that at some point I play the bassline with my left hand and had to do all the camera positioning and the solo's with my right hand. The first sequence you hear is performed by the MFM Modular using the Synthesizers.com Q150 filter. The second sequence you hear is performed by slot A of the Nord Lead 1. The third bas sequence is performed by the Synthesizers.com Modular using the CGS Steiner filter. The bassline is performed by the MiniMax ASB using the AKAI AX80 keyboard. The solo's are performed on the Nord Lead 1 (slot B) and on the Korg 900PS. I had to shorten the video a little bit because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video is 10:43 long and you can see or download it from my website."

A changing theme

YouTube via attorks

"This time I experimented with changing between 3 different sequences using 3 presets from the Doepfer MAQ16/3. At first you hear the bass sequence from the Synthesizers.com Modular driven by row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3. After that the volume is raised for the sequence from the self built Modular driven by MAQ's row 2. The 3rd sequence comes from the Creamware MiniMax ASB which is driven by MAQ's row 3. The strings are performed by the AKAI AX80 and the solo's are played on the Korg 900PS and the Clavia Nord Lead 1. You see, the setting is somewhat the same as the previous video but is sounds different. I had to shorten the video almost 6 minutes because of the YouTube limit of 10 minutes. The original video is 15:53 long and you can see or download it from my website."

Under The Side Panel

punkdISCO found this under the side panel of his Korg 900ps. The following are a couple more shots of the inside: one, two. Click the image on the left or the title link for a super sized shot.

The stamps with 58.8.26 is the year in Nengo (Emperor Era), month and day the synth was stamped. 58 would make it 1977? If you know more feel free to comment.

Update via the world of next tuesday in the comments:
""Nengo" is just saying it's a Japanese date, not a Western date. Written properly in English the synth is from the year "Showa 52" (I've seen it abbreviated S52 for instance a lot in Japanese booklets).

I guess the math is 1926+S-1 because there was no year Showa 0. Now "52" is easy to assume as Showa since no recent emperor lived as long as Showa (a.k.a. Hirohito) and the synth has to have either a Showa or Heisei date (1989+H-1), but avoiding confusion you are supposed to add whomever's reign it was or is to the number."
