Korg EX-800 with HAWK and AtomaHawk Upgrades

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The original EX-800 had only a very basic MIDI implementation and also had somewhat limited sound modulating abilities. The HAWK and AtomaHawk kits bring so many new features including total MIDI control of every parameter. And the number of parameters is nearly doubled. There are four LFO's (2 LFO's and 2 SLFO's) instead of just one. The resonance, moog slayer and FM-800 mod's are part of the AtomaHawk upgrade. So you get all of those mod's and also the 12/24db per octave mod is included too. What really makes the difference is having those mod's under MIDI and patch memory control. Now you can use envelope generator 3 and any of the four LFO's to control the mod's. There is also MIDI velocity sensitivity, portamento and many, many more features including harmonic modulation. You also get 256 patch memory in 4 banks of 64. And all data is stored in flash ROM so you can forget about battery replacement and rest easy about battery leakage causing damage since you don't need an internal battery at all..."

FrankenKorg 800 Demo

FrankenKorg 800 Demo - Toshiba Libretto and Alesis Nanoverb inside a Korg Poly 800 synthesizer!

YouTube Uploaded by opl3toshiba on Feb 24, 2012

"This Korg Poly 800 keyboard is modified with the Moog Slayer mod, FM 800 mod, 12/24 db filter switch, VCF external audio in, an Alesis Nanoverb, and a Toshiba Libretto laptop computer. An Alesis Nanoverb and a Toshiba Libretto have never been built into a Korg Poly 800 synthesizer, until now. In this video I play the FrankenKorg to demonstrate most of its features and sound possibilities. Every sound is generated inside the FrankenKorg; no external effects were used. At some points during the video, I use a foot pedal I designed that connects to the synthesizer and controls the internal VCF cutoff. The video was recorded with a Sony DXC-327 and the audio was recorded with Pro Tools. A Toshiba Libretto 50CT laptop was designed to fit where the programming decal was on the original Poly 800. The Korg's midi out is connected to the input of the MPU-401 controller in the Libretto and the audio output of the Libretto is switchable to either the VCF ext. in or the input of the Nanoverb. In this video, I used the software wavetable and OPL3 FM synthesis chip in the Libretto. The Alesis Nanoverb circuit board sits underneath the Libretto's keyboard inside the FrankenKorg. Controlling the Nanoverb is accomplished through five of the eight added knobs on the Korg's casing. The Nanoverb's audio out can be routed through its original 1/4 inch outputs as well as the headphone output of the Korg. The Nanoverb provides reverb, delay, flange, rotary and chorus effects."

Modified Casio HT-700 with Drum Pitch and Moog Slayer Filter Mod

via this auction

"modified Casio HT-700 Synthesizer with Moog Slayer filter mods and Drum Pitch mods. The filter mod is MUCH better than the one done on the wimpy Poly 800, and the drum pitch is insane! The filter mod allows you to adjust Cutoff and Resonance in REAL time, and the VCA is analog."

Repaired and modded synth jam

YouTube Uploaded by ChrisLody on Feb 13, 2012

This is a little synth jam that i've been planning for a while. All of the synths and effects in this video have been repaired by me over the last few years. Here's what i used:

Korg Poly 800 (far left)

I bought this from a cash generator for £30 and found it had a scrambled memory, missing joystick and a dead oscillator. A previous owner had modded the battery compartment to take a pp3 instead of the usual 6 D cells. I replaced the battery and fitted a knob to the joystick to make it usable. It was years later that my electronic skill were good enough to track the dead oscillator down to a faulty op-amp. With the help of the forum below i was able to replace it and get it up and running.

http://music-electronics-forum.com/t24095/

While i had the thing i bit i decided to add the 'Moog Slayer' and 'Filter FM' mods to it which make it much more fun :D

Korg Poly 800 Moog Slayer Mod Doth Not a Moog Maketh

via Ununseptium warehouse where you'll find the full post.

"For anyone unfamiliar with this manoeuvre, it involves tapping into a couple of variable resistors on the Poly 800's motherboard and routing them to a pair of potentiometers, which should be fitted onto the synth's outer casing, to control the filter cutoff and resonance. Here's a link to the destructions." Note that is a link to the Moog Slayer Mod instructions and not Ununseptium warehouse's post.

Diabolical Custom Orange KORG Poly-800

via this auction

"This item is a custom Korg poly-800 synthesizer with a custom paint job, blue displays and "moog-slayer" filter mods. The Poly-800 is a great sounding synth popular for its analog VCF (filter) and fat video game tone. We have added a very popular modification which adds external controls for the cutoff and resonance of the VCF. In addition to being able to adjust these parameters in real time the range of the filter is also expanded. We have refurbished and painted the poly-800 and added custom blue 7-segment displays. We have also added an internal lithium battery so that the synth will remember saved patches when you turn the power off (originally you would need to keep c batteries installed to retain patch data)..."

Korg Poly-800 Synthesizer with many mods

via this auction

"The first mods that were performed were the famous "Moog slayer" mod, which brings the cutoff and resonance pots out for manual use, with a knob added for each. NO MORE MENU DIVING! The filter mod was also done, so you also have a switchable 24/12db filter. I then began to experiment and added a FM amount knob, a chorus modulation knob, a noise control, and also a chorus distortion knob. Audio in was my last project, as was servicing the joystick and getting that working up to par... BE WARNED! The Moog Slayer mod CAN kill your speakers if the resonance patch data exceeds a value of 10-11. This is documented in the mod's DIY site..."

Voynich Modified Korg Poly 800 Synth Moog Slayer

YouTube via Synthasy2000
"Another Poly 800 to been improved by this simple and effective modification"

Follow-up to this post on the KORG DW-8000. via the AH mailing list where Voynich (Chris Strellis) wrote in regarding discussion of the Poly-800 and DW-8000: "Check out my song "The Power of Nine" to hear the bass line made with a DW8000 in unison.

http://www.myspace.com/strellismusic

Also more of my DW8000 doing the (minimoog) solos in "Airwaves"

http://www.myspace.com/energiefabrik

For the money I'd get a DW8000 hands down, no contest. Cheap, great filters, digital delay-ay-ay-ay and many of the parameter can be controlled over MIDI.

Cheers
Chris"

Korg Poly-800 Custom Case

via this auction

"This is not a digital synth as some might say, its a true analouge unit with DCOs which are digital controlled to keep in tune and locked

Serious mod done as you can see to convert it to a stand alone desktop MIDI contolled synth module and finished in a shocking bright orange. 2 extra pots on the front for the "moog slayer" filter cut and resonance speaker blowing ear bleeding mod. Thi is a serious mod and should be used with extreme caution when uping the resonace setting in the presets... 2 osc 8 note poly synth, very simple to program and store sounds, connect to you pc laptop and send sysex info with ease for changing patches and sounds... customised unit made from a full size Poly 800 mk2 Midi in/out - Stereo outputs - Digital delay built in"
