Wersi EX20 - rare 20 voice additive synthesizer with analog SSM filters

Pics of the inside below. You can find videos of the EX20 in previous posts.

"This is the rare 20 voice rack version of the Wersi MK1. The EX20/MK1 is a VERY unique additive, digital/analog hybrid synthesizer. It's an oddly complex, weird alien machine in every manner. It's notoriously one of the most difficult synths to master due to its cryptic language, design, programming methods and function. So if you enjoy taming the more deep and daunting synthesizers: you'll be in bliss with this. Fortunately I have the programmer overlays attached to the top for (much needed and convenient) reference. Adding to its outsider nature; it is also paraphonic, as the 20 additive voices feed into a single but glorious sounding analog SSM filter. The EX20 has been internally cleaned and well cared for. It is functioning as properly as a EX20/MK1 can be, with all the original quirks and charms it was born with. Definitely one of the most unique synthesizers made. The most stable and current OS proms have been installed."

WERSI EX10R Synthesizer Expander with 8-bit drums 1985 | HD DEMO | SAMPLE PACK

Published on Jun 13, 2016 AnalogAudio1

"(c) 2016 by AnalogAudio1

Wersi EX10R is a programmable synthesizer module / accompaniment from Germany.

It has digital and analog circuits. It has digital waveforms and sampled waveforms. Resonant VCF (lowpass filter). The modulation effects are fully analog: chorus and ensemble. It has great 8-bit drum samples! It also produces great string ensemble strings, thanks to its "ensemble" effect. Great organs (hey, it's a Wersi!) It also has a programmable accompaniment section. MIDI. Little fluorescent display. The programming is quite complicated.

Update via swissdoc in the comments:

"The Wersi EX10 is the rack version of their Omega DX10 organ. They use the DMS tone generation, which is featured in devices like Condor DX100, Alpha DX300/350, Beta DX400, Gamma DX500S, Delta DX500T, Prisma DX5, Omega DX10, Stage Performer MK1, EX10R and EX20.

Only the Stage Performer MK1 and the rack version of it, the EX20 are programmable.

The EX10R can not be programmed, as in creation of a sound from scratch, it can be used to layer presets and to modify filter settings (switched cap filter or SSM 2044 in later models) or settings of the Wersivoice String-Ensemble. The drum part allows for user pattern creation.

DMS stands for Digital Multi-Sound and is in fact based on a Z8 CPU driven voice card for 2 voices, which is based on fading between additive created waveshapes. There is no sampling involved, even so the sounds are pretty "realistic".

Some presets utilize a special programming of the voicecards, one for instance cycles through the vovels A-E-I-O-U per keypress, another one play a little arpeggio. Those cannot be programmed on the Performer MK1 or the EX20, only a special computer system at Wersi could do this.

The EX10R could be equipped with reverb (DH10, DH11 or DH100) all similar, using different bit depths, sample rate and number of algorithms. Sound quality of the DH10 is quite low-fi and calculation is based on 6809 processor.

The Spectra from the CD Series later had an enhaced version of the DMS system, where much more harmonics have been available.

Wersi later developed advanced concepts for digital pianos by using transputers and data compression, called WERSI-Digitalpiano CT 1 or CG 1 based on D-Art-Klangerzeugungs-System mit ASIC-Transputer-DSP Technologie."

This one in via swissdoc. It was listed on eBay Switzerland.

swissdoc created an mp3 from his copy on CD (link below):

"I have this music on CD and ripped it for information and educational pupose about how the Wersi Instruments sound. It is a demo CD for Wersi Instruments like Stage Performer MK 1 SIII, Spectra DX 700 CD, Midi-Expender EX10/EX20 and Drum Composer CX 5, music is composed and recorded by a certain Dirk Schmalenbach. On German Wikipedia you find some details.

Wersi EX20R Rare Additive Rack Synth

"Download here: http://acreil.bandcamp.com/album/misc...

I don't know what's wrong with the likes/dislikes on this video. Analytics shows 24 likes and 0 dislikes, while the video currently shows 3 likes and 29 dislikes. There seems to have been a glitch at some point.

Multitracked Wersi EX20 with Ibanez SDR-1000 reverb. This synth is capable of some highly unusual sounds when (in)correctly programmed, so I thought I'd showcase that side of it. It's sort of a half tribute and half parody of 70s computer music (i.e. Jean-Claude Risset, John Chowning, etc.). I find that sort of music tends to be sometimes brilliant and sometimes ponderously arbitrary (at least from the listener's perspective), so I tried to get a little of each in there.

Due to the bizarre user interface and poor/unavailable documentation, I think very few people have programmed these synths to this extent. At the time I think I only had the German user manual. I have the English manual now, but it omits much of the sound programming stuff.

Most of the interesting territory comes from doing strange things with the pitch and amplitude envelopes. Each stage of the envelope can be assigned a "module" that takes two parameters and does some function like noise modulation, increment, delay, linear or exponential rise or fall, loop, etc. It's even possible to make nested loops. These things don't necessarily behave the way you'd expect (are these undocumented features or bugs?), so it's basically a trial and error process, but the results can be very surprising. Recorded 2010?

Check the (NiCd) memory backup battery if you own one of these. They can leak and cause damage."

"The Wersi is a very deep synth, even today, has an analog filter and uses beautiful additive synthesis, with lots of envelope modulations possible..."

Curious how deep these are. Wersi's are known for more preset auto-accompaniment type machines.  You can find some details in this previous post.

Wersi EX20 MIDI Expander Synth

via this auction

"After 10 years as an organ manufacturer, Wersi enters the synthesizer field with the MK1 (or EX20 module), a digital 20 note polyphonic synthesizer.

Its sounds are based on a configuration of sounds modules such as wave, pitch-envelope, amplitude envelopes and analog effects to produce fourier, waveform sample, and modular synthesis. The front panel features a 32 slider 'wavemaker' module used for each synthesis mode.

A 61 note velocity & pressure keyboard can split and provide up to 8 timbres simultaneously per side. The EX20 is a rack mount version of the MK1. Both instruments can 'see' up to 16 midi channels for multi-timbral operation, and transmits on up to 8 channels at one time."
