"Hello,up for auction is a Vintage Yamaha CS60 Synthesizer. This synth works fine , sounds excellent and is in great condition with normal wear for it's age. The legs and foot controller are not included.

This belongs to the business partner of the late Tim Smith who was the Western Regional Tech Rep for Sequential Circuits , Arp, Moog also contributing to the famous Vintage Synthesizers book and articles in Keyboard Magazine. Tim was an expert at repairing all kinds of synthesizers and electronics and over the years amassed quite a bit of stuff. Most of his collection has disappeared except for a few items I've come across that will be available for sale this week."

Yamaha CS60 SN 1744 with Mods

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"***SPECIAL MODIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN DONE TO THIS SYNTH:
1) Touch switches- 5 of them, that have built in LEDs to indicate status and to switch to the modded presets etc
2) Modded Presets- the original (fairly crappy) presets have been specially modded
3) External Control Voltage Outputs- send each oscillator to external processors
4)DB25 interface ports- one male, connected to the special mod boards, 1 female, never used yet. just installed on back of synth
5) Custom PCB boards- two in the cage (they are the blue ones) and two next to the power supply, which contain 14 relays and control cables etc
6) Mystery! I am not sure how the mods work or exactly what all of them do! I know some of them are for external CVs and preset changes..."

Yamaha CS60 Polyphonic Synthesizer

via this auction

"This Yamaha CS 60 is in perfect functional condition and comes complete with the travel case lid, an original stand and Yamaha carrying bag for the stand. The tolex is in nice shape with no evidence of brittleness or flaking common with 35 year old synths. The buckles, clasps, and edge protectors are still shiny as is the stand with no evidence of rust or pitting. All knobs and slider pots are static free and slide very freely. The ribbon controller is perfect- no bumpiness or ruptured springs underneath. The aftertouch is extremely responsive just like it was in 1977. Many CS 60/80s that are sold without stands have bottom damage to the tolex and grates. The bottom of this unit is in great shape as evidenced by the photo. Many CS 60s were organ donors for the older brother, the CS 80. This is not the case with this synth. It was very well cared for and maintained and is is perfect tune. It was never gigged. Consequently, it does not suffer from road rash...

Polyphony- 8 voices
61 pressure sensitive keys
Oscillators- 1 per voice with saw, sine, and PWM and white noise wave sources. The Pulse wave has its own LFO for speed control
VCF- has LP and HP filters with AADSR envelope control and depth control
VCA- has AADSR envelope control and volume level control
LFO- sine, square, noise, saw, and inv saw waveshapes
Ribbon controller- one octave up and goes sub audio on way down
Aftertouch control- OSC, VCF, VCA, depth
Ring Modulator- depth, speed, attack, delay
Separate resonance and brilliance control for each preset and lower and higher octaves on keyboard
Transpose- two octaves up , two down
13 presets/ 1 user
Portamento, Glissando, and Sustain control
Gross and Fine tune control( all voices)

"This was releases [sic.] just one year before the CS-80, its just a smaller version of what came after it. Its 4 voice, 49 key with aftertouch sensitivity that can control many features. The sound is amazing, one of my favorites for years. Even the 13 presets with a little ring mod sound great!"

The CS60 added four voices for a total of eight, the ribbon controller and the single mini slider patch memory on the top left.

YAMAHA CS-50

via this auction

Note the CS50 does not have the ribbon controller or preset patch panel of the CS60. The synth engine of the CS50 and CS60 is half a CS80. A CS80 allows you to layer the two engines or rather two patches. Here's a funny analogy that may be blasphemy to some. It's similar to the Roland GAiA. :) With the GAiA you layer four synth engines, with the CS80 you layer two. See this post for some pics for the following: If you look at the patch selections there are two rows. You select one patch from each. If you look at the panel there are two rows, you edit the upper patch selected with the top row and the bottom with the bottom. If you look at the user patch panel you will see four rows equating four user presets that can be saved, the first two can be selected in the top row of patch buttons, and the bottom two on the bottom (see this pic). Note you aren't saving presets to any memory, you literally set each slider and leave it where you want. If you look at the CS50 and a CS60 you will see they consist of one row or engine of the CS80s two. The CS60 adds mono aftertouch, the preset patch panel, and the ribbon controller. The CS80 adds the second synth engine and poly aftertouch. Note there is a mod that allows you to layer a single patch on the CS60 and I'm assuming CS50 to go from an 8 voice single patch to a 4 voice layered patch. If anyone has more info on this mod, let me know. [Difference between the CS50, CS60 and CS80]

Yamaha CS60 Modded with MIDI

via this auction
"Here's some feature of the Kenton MIDI retrofit: For incoming MIDI:
- Any MIDI channel can be selected
- Notes (MIDI note numbers 36 - 96) - transpose possible
- Program change (numbers 1 - 14 top row and 17 to 30 bottom row)
- Pitchbend - (bends up and down a second)
- Mod Wheel (switch to enable)
- Filter cutoff frequency (of low pass filter)
- Portamento
- Sustain
- Volume
By default:
- pitchbend is controlled by pitchbend messages
- mod wheel is controlled by Mod Wheel (CC#1) and also by Aftertouch messages
- filter cutoff is controlled by CC#16
- resonance is controlled by CC#17
- Volume is controlled by MIDI volume (CC#7)
- Sustain is controlled by Sustain (CC#64)
- Portamento is controlled by Portamento (CC#65)

however, any controller or aftertouch or velocity can be mapped to control other things so for example velocity could be mapped to control volume."
