Yamaha SY-2 Vintage Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This rare Yamaha SY-2 was serviced in 2016, a $700+ service and was discreetly mod for an audio filter input via the mono rca output. The 1/4" serves as the main output, and the rca jack allows for the amazing filter to be used as an audio input. In amazing shape for its age (1976). Some light wear, the ser8ial number was minutely etched into the back edge, and top inside case. Not noticeable from the front. There are some minor scratches to the bottom case. It is truly a really clean serviced unit with such a raw filter."

Yamaha SY-2 SN 3081

via this auction

"Super organic, extremely expressive, warm sounding synthesizer.

It could basically be viewed as a sort of single-voice CS-80.

Those two filters are rather amazing !

In a very good condition.

Included are the original upper case lid, chrome legs, and chrome sheetmusic stand (which is often missing for some reason).

A few flaws:

- Due to age,the filter sliders exhibit some static while beeing moved

(I wonder if there are any SY-2's out there without it - this is my 4th one and the 3 before all had the same to various degrees).

Rherefore, some cleaning might be needed.

- At the bottom of the synth, the compartment holding the power cord is missing a small metal piece, which is used to open the door.

Now a small screwdriver or something similar is needed.

Just minor flaws, but should be mentioned anyway, of course.

220 VAC

Thanks for looking, have a great day ! :-)"

The wonderful Yamaha SY-2

video upload by Paul Curreri

"A few sounds from the Yamaha SY-2 (1975 or so), the upgraded version 2 of Yamaha’s earliest standalone. Such a lovely filter, and remarkably expressive aftertouch to the VCO, VCA or VCF. Start with any of the adjustable presets and meander from there. Pitch bend, portamento, pulse width, two ADSRs, resonant high- and low-pass filters, super-fast vibrato. Plus it's never had a problem in the 6 years I've owned it & has classic CS vibes? Not too shabby."

Yamaha SY-1 Solo Synth SN 1740

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. Yamaha SY-1 | Yamaha’s First Portable Analog Synth | Part of the GX1 and CS80 Lineage
video upload by Alamo Music Audio Lab

"Today, Zach is taking a look at the Yamaha SY-1, a unique synthesizer straight out of the 70's Yamaha organ craze. From the lineage that brought you the all-time great CS-80, the SY-1 is a preset-heavy analog synthesizer that was created and used for lead lines and all kinds of nostalgic tones. Take a look and a listen and tell us what you think!

Sounds start at 6:54"

via this auction

"The first portable synth that Yamaha ever made!
Features the same sound engine as the legendary flagship CS-80 and GX-1 synths, albeit a monophonic primitive version. Also features aftertouch (probably also a first) that can be switched to control vibrato, pitch bend, filter, and volume. The presets are really amazing and go from Vangelis to 70s porn film soundtracks to Toto to Parliament Funkadelic to Close Encounters of the Third Kind at the flick of a switch! (John Williams used its successor, the SY-2, for the famous "Ba Di Da Buh Da"- the SY-2 apparently only had more envelope and filter controls and was otherwise sonically identical.)
Please see the Youtube link for an in-depth sound demo."

Nights of '82 by United Simesky Institutes

Nights of '82 is a new release from supporting member, United Simesky Institutes. You can find five promo codes below.

"Coming a few good years after the first album, 'Nights of '82' is a retro love letter, a stream of musical conscience inspired by distant memories of the atmosphere of metro trips and forgotten '80's and 90's B movies ("Spacetime Metro Tunnel", 'Melancholic Mullets'), Western and Eastern technology shows ('Optomimetic', 'Networks in the East') and tracker music aesthetics ('Sim 1').

'Instantly groovy and undeniably catchy', ' some of these songs are the most compelling instrumentals we’ve heard in a while.'

We Write About Music

Composed, played and produced by Simesky.
Strings on tracks 2 and 10 by Budapest Scoring Orchestra.
Synths and drum machine samples on track 3 from The Museum of Soviet Synthesizers website.

Fun fact: the Arturia Matrix V had a huge role in the instrumentation, its poly and FX sounds functioning as signature hooks across songs. Hardware synths include the Korg Monologue and the Yamaha SY-85.

YAMAHA SY 99 | Enigma "Sadeness" Synthesizer | Factory Songs (Remastered)

video upload by Simon Le Grec

"The SY99 is like having a super-sized sampling workstation with the synthesis and sounds of a DX-7mkII. Basically the same as the SY77 it features a larger 76 note keyboard with upgraded synthesis, sample memory, sequencer and more! For its synthesizer section it employs a 6 operator AFM synth engine similar to, if not better than, the original DX's.

Sampled preset sounds (AWM2) can then be fused with the AFM sounds to create entirely wild new sounds! And these sounds are quite shapeable thanks to the resonant multi stage Time Variant Filters which offer the ability to recreate the warm analog sounds of classic synths, or something entirely new.

- AFM FM frequency modulation+ RCM convolution this special FM functions allows to
use an internal noise generator or a sample element AWM as modulator input for an OP

- A patch is composed by 1 / 2 / 4 elements from different syntheses according to 10
soundpath structures (notes: NOTE: RCM algorithms number 9 and 10 use a PCM voice
or an imported sample as an FM modulator - but not as carrier - to an operator.

- AWM PCM SAMPLES the intenal 8 MB ROM wavetable contains 267 PCM waveforms
coded at maximum 48 kHz at 16 bits based on AWM2 synthesis (YM7119 also digital
filter).
- The internal ROM wavetable is organized into 4 main categories:
- Classic digital workstation based on a complex mix of FM + PCM samples playback
Even if time has passed, the Sy99 remains a true digital masterpiece.

There's an enhanced on-board sequencer section for creating your songs right on the SY99. It's got 16 tracks, from which channel 16 belongs to the built-in drum synthesizer. The sequencer can hold up to 27,000 notes, 99 patterns and 10 songs. And since the SY99 features 16 voices of polyphony for the AFM section, and another 16 voices for the sampled sounds, there are 32 voices to go around to build your song.

Not to mention there are 2 digital multi-effects processors which include reverb, delay, chorus, panning and more! Professional features for those of you want to really control and shape your sounds using the unique sounds (and complex synthesis) of a Yamaha FM synth with some special features up its sleeve.

Yamaha's Coolest Monosynth

Alex Ball

"A look at Yamaha's CS-30 monophonic synthesizer from 1977. This was the closest Yamaha got to a modular synth before their attention moved wholesale into FM synthesis. Yamaha released their first analogue synth (the SY-1) in 1974 and their last (the CS-01 II) in 1983. They've never made an analogue synthesizer since, although they have made analogue modelling synths.

Yamaha SY-2 vintage analog synthesizer + legs + music stand + lid SN 1459

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for sale is a vintage Yamaha SY-2 analog synthesizer in good working condition. It's just been serviced and ready for the future. The service report is part of the sale.

The synth is complete with lid to close the case, music stand, and legs.

The synth sounds very good. Some call this a mini-CS80. The touch control gives you the opportunity to add more expression when you're playing.

Cosmetically it's in good condition for its age, but there are some signs of use. Some scratches, little rusty spots on the legs and metal parts, and there's little wear and tear on the hardcase, keys, knobs and front panel. Please check all the photos before you buy the item.

It's an originally European version, working on 220v. The serial number is: 1459"
