DelayNoMore

Published on Apr 22, 2016 cirtcele

"was asked to make a vid where you can hear the original clean signal. I hope this shows that the DelayNoMore is a crappy delay module but good at glitchy mayhem, which is what it was designed to do."

new nonlinear circuits squid axon

Published on Apr 22, 2016 cirtcele

"Just some examples of the signals from the Squid Axon when fed a tri-wave and clocks at various rates. Adjusting the feedback pots gives various chaotic bursts. More info - http://nonlinearcircuits.blogspot.com..."

"Just the module everybody has been waiting for! A squid brain cell simulator!

The Squid Axon is a circuit based on the Hodgkin-Huxley equation describing the chaotic behaviour observed in giant squid axons. The inspiration for the module came from a 2003 paper by T. Matsuzaki & M. Nakagawa, titled 'A Bipolar Logistic Chaos Neuron and Its Hardware Implementation'.

Basically it is a four stage analog shift register with two feedback paths, one nonlinear and one linear (I do try to walk the line). If you turn the feedback paths down to zero, you get a regular ASR. Turn up the feedback to get more complex and staggered patterns from the 4 CV outputs. It will happily run at audio rates as well."

nonlinearcircuits 329 phase flange 1

Published on Jan 25, 2016 cirtcele

"module based on the Aries 329 Phase/Flange. ummmm this thing is fkn great, does so much more than a stand-alone phaser.
Starts with 2 inputs from a Sloth chaos, then it gets some audio rate tri-wave on the 1V/oct input."

nonlinearcircuits Introduces 1050 MixSeq Based on the ARP 2500 1050

Published on Jan 25, 2016 cirtcele

"This module is a mixer, 8 stage sequencer, two 4 stage sequencers and a sequential switch.
Functionally based on the core of the ARP2500 1050 mixer sequencer."

via nonlinear circuits:

"This module is based on the Arp 1050 mix sequencer. Although this version drops the VCO and push button functions. Using the switches, it is an 8 step sequencer, two 4 step sequencers, an 8 input mixer, 8 stage sequential switch, two 4 stage sequential switches and there is also a difference rectifier giving the +ve and -ve difference between stages 1-4 and 5-8.

The assembled PCB shown was a proto-type but the sockets should all be on the same side and the LEDs are actually thru-hole. I just used smd LEDs as they are easy to remove.

It is pretty much all SOIC and 0805 components, but a pretty easy build.

PCB - US$22, 16HP panel US$30, assembled - US$220"

New nonlinearcircuits fk1t VCF

Published on Dec 29, 2015 cirtcele

"This filter is based on the korg Fk-1 pedal. It shared the same topology as the other Korg filters found in the 800dv and 700, but used 4 vactrols........oh!

Probably good to wear headphones or listen to this thru a good set of speakers, this filter has a LOT of character.
This recording was made from the very 1st time I tested this PCB, so haven't yet tweaked any values to get optimal CV ranges and Q response."

nonlinearcircuits aries 329 phase clone

Published on Dec 23, 2015 cirtcele

"1st play with this module. Still a bit of tweaking of the trimpots to do and adjust some signal level, but it seems to sound pretty good!
Circuit is based on the Aries 329 phase/Flange, which is not the same as but shares some similarities with the Arp Quadra phaser and the Tau pipe Phaser. This version is nearly all smd and uses BCM847 matched transistors"

nonlinearcircuits cellF - live human neurons based modular synth

cellF hall Published on Oct 5, 2015 cirtcele

"A very quick behind the scenes look at the setup for the 1st performance of cellF. This was filmed on a very crappy old mobile-phone, so def. not HD. More info here - http://guybenary.com/work/cellf/"

via nonlinearcircuits

"On Sunday 4th October the 1st live performance of cellF was given. cellF is an analogue modular synthesizer controlled by live human neurons grown on an electrode array...

Regarding the electronics:
The neuron dish has 60 electrodes, each of these is hooked up to and amplifier circuit to boost the neuron signals by approx 100x and then a comparator. Neurons chatter away constantly but they put out bursts of triggers every now & then, called action potentials, and it is these triggers we want.
So the black panel contains 60 processing circuits to extract the action potentials (triggers) and then we use these to control the synth.

The panel also has 16 stimulation input to send signals into the neurons (reduced to a max of 1Vp-p and approx 7ms trigger). To prevent feedback loops there are 60 analogue switches to momentarily turn off the processing circuits when a stim signal is sent. All this took quite a bit of work to develop and get right, but it is now fkn great!
During the performance (I was not the performer, we had a real musician for that - Darren Moore), I had to check and adjust the comparators a couple of times as the neuronal activities changes over time. Otherwise the synth was untouched and just communicated with the Darren, his drumhits were fed to the stim inputs. During the performance, it was very clear the neurons were responding to stimulation. It was great to listen to and must have been an incredible experience for Darren. A pro vid & audio crew recorded the event, so I will add links when they become available.

The actual synth section contains only NLC modules:
6 tri-core VCOs
4 LFOs
4 LPGs
8 VCAs
2 VC spring reverbs
2 diff-rectifiers
2 jerkoff chaos
4 281 EGs
2 Sauce of Unces
2 7 stage clock dividers with staircase
2 quad logic with resistor ladder & VC slew
2 Quad oscillator / low pass filter
2 choppers
2 Delay no mores
2 Vactrol PiLLs
2 DP filters
2 FF chaos
2 Sloth chaos
2 offset mixers
4 voltage controlled matrix mixers (32 VCAs in each so 128 VCAs)
2 multiband distortions
12 envelope generators
8 Frigates (pitch2CV and pitch2gate modules)
Plus a bunch of mults....think thats it"

nonlinearcircuits BOOLs

Published on Jun 19, 2015 cirtcele

"This module is like a hybrid between the NLC quad logic module and the Sauce of Unce. There are 4 inputs driving chained logic gates (you can choose what logic you want - OR, NOR, AND, NAND, XOR or XNOR by the chip installed). There are 4 gate outputs giving the boolean logic result of the signals on inputs 1&2, 2&3, 3&4 and 4&1. A resistor ladder network gives the stepped output based on what these 4 outputs are doing. From this a S&H circuit with a slew processor gives a smooth output."

BOOLs 3

via nonlinearcircuits

"These are nice. The inputs can be any signal crossing 1V. The logic outputs give 5V gates that are all related to each other as made up of different input combinations. The S&H input can be a trigger, gate or CV. The stepped and slewed outputs an be very similar to what comes out of the Sauce of Unce or Buchla 265 SOU. The ICs are all thru-hole, resistors can be 1206 or 0805 smd. Pretty easy build, has 4 LEDs for blinkenlights.
Using different logic chips gives you some pretty different behaviour so it is worth having more than one of these. The XOR/XNOR chips cn be used as crude ring modulators at audio frequencies.

This is a great module for just patching in any spare outputs from LFOs, sequencers, ADSRs, etc and generating a whole bunch of gates and CVs that are sync'd with everything else going on in your patch.

PCBs - US$18
panels - US$20
airmail - US$5 per order"

nonlinearcircuits segue 1 - WEAR HEADPHONES

Published on Jun 13, 2015 cirtcele

"This is the 1st start-up of this module (panner/VCA), so was not calibrated. The inputs are a pulse and tri wave from two different VCOs, CV duties are a tri wave from a LFO. When calibrated you should see the waveform morph from 100% pulse to 100% tri-wave. It gets close in this vid but needs some tweaking."

4seq

Published on Apr 4, 2015 cirtcele

"8 HP Eurorack Sequencer for June WAMod workshop, four stages but with fwd/reverse control so you can get some pretty complex sequences happening when feeding it 2 diffrent clock signals. Two CV outs giving the opposite count of each other, so if one is giving 1234123..., the other is going 4321432...
Also there is a clock divider giving /2, /4, /8 & /16 of the count (which of course gets really interesting when the fwd/reverse control is in action)"

multi-band Distortion processor

Published on Feb 18, 2015 cirtcele

"Built the 1st proto-type of this today. Works fine, just need to tweak the gain levels of the sub200 channel and slightly redesign the panel.

Basically it splits the input signals into 4 frequency bands, these go into fuzz circuits and vactrol based VCAs, then summed to the output or use the individual channel outputs. You can blend the clean/distorted signal and vary the fuzz characteristics."
