Elektron Monomachine Karplus Strong technique

YouTube via darenager — April 05, 2010 — "A very basic demo of how to do Karplus Strong synthesis using the Monomachine.

Not intended to be a musical perfomance just a demo of the technique, here's how:

Start with a short sound, such as the GND Noise machine, set a short decay, turn the delay send up, set the delay time to the shortest possible, set the delay feedback at 64, in the key follow page set the delay time and DBAS to negative key follow - you can experiment here for different sounds.

Adjusting the various delay parameters will change the sound, keep the delay time short and feedback around 64, I made some percussive sounds, plucked string type sounds and FM sounding tones by experimenting with the settings. Have fun ;)

"Experiment with syncing the OP-1 to the modular by way of the Monotribe, recorded the Monotribe clock into OP-1, panned hard left, recorded a few parts on the remaining 3 tracks panned hard right, input the Monotribe and OP-1 into the mighty Bug system where they were sequencer filtered. Good fun!"

"Just got the Dub Synth so thought I'd experiment using it in a quick jam with the Monotribe. The Monotribe is triggering the Dub Synth, changing the decay time so that it is overlapping the triggers results in some nice rhythmic variations, good fun! More soon."

"Just a quick demo of me making some Juno type chord sounds, the Bugbrand CTL-1 is sequencing each oscillator of the MFB OSC2, it is being clocked by the Blacet Micro LFO, the output from the MFB OSC2 is going into the A-106-6 filter. 2 Sections of the A143-2 are shaping the amplitude of the VCA and cutoff frequency of the filter. I did not spend too much time on it so the chords are a bit off and the sound quality is a bit crap, but you get the idea hopefully."

"Covering a few styles from minimal techno, acid, oldschool house, deep house, 35 minute hardware mix, a few messy bits but I wanted to get it recorded before midnight, I did not have time to rehearse so what you hear is the rehearsal, some pre-programmed patterns, some made up on the fly, I might revisit some of the patterns in future videos.

All recorded direct with no post processing, gear used 2x Korg Volca Sample, Korg Monotribe, Korg Electribe 2, TE OP-1, Peavey RQ200 mixer, analog delay pedal.

"Rough mix of a track I am currently working on, it is just me muting tracks in and out on the RS7000 in realtime.

The track was written as a retrospective to the sounds I used to dance to at parties in my youth from 1987-1989. It takes influence from artists such as Mr Fingers, Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson and other great early house and acid house producers. There are no samples from other records but there is a couple of 303 loops and an 808 sample from my machines.
