"Vintage Sequential Circuits model 800 Sequencer. Super rare and a unique way to sequence. There are some youtube videos that show these in action [you can find them in the archives here]. Sequences have more life in their natural timing. This unit works perfectly and is very clean."

1979 Keyboard Magazine Interview with Dave Smith

On how it all began:

"It wasn't until 1972, when he saw and immediately bought a Minimoog, that Smith began to consolidate these two areas [music & engineering]. He began making tapes with his new synthesizer and a four-track tape deck, but before long he had grown dissatisfied with that setup. 'Granted, there are a million things you can do with the Minimoog that most people don't even get near touching, but still everything is pretty much pre-patched, and I wanted to start doing more,' he explains. Starting from scratch, Dave soon built his own analog sequencer, which also functioned as a waveform generator when interfaced with a keyboard.

'When I finished it,' he relates, 'I realized that maybe someone else would want one, and that I might try to sell one. I guess that's how Sequential Circuits officially got started.' In 1974 the company name was trademarked, and Dave, working literally out of a closet in his one-bedroom apartment, began marketing and improving his Model 600 sequencer in his spare time. By late 1975, with his lab spilling over into the extra bedroom of another apartment, he was building the digital Model 800 sequencers. After a while he was renting workspace in Sunnyvale, in the area known as Silicon Valley, the heart of California's computer country, plugging in a telephone answering machine to take orders, and hiring assemblers. But it wasn't until April 1977, just after designing his synthesizer programmer, that Smith quit his regular job and began devoting his full energies to Sequential Circuits."

You'll find the full interview and a great write-up on the history of Sequential Circuits on Keyboard Magazine's online site here.

Sequential Circuits Co. Model 800 Sequencer ex. Frederic Mercier (serviced) SN 00222

via this auction

"Vintage Sequential Circuits Co. Model 800 Sequencer in perfect working condition. It’s just been serviced and ready for the future. The service report is part of the sale as a proof of what’s been done.

I bought this rare sequencer from the French composer Frederic Mercier. Sequences can be recorded into one of the 16 “banks”, each capable of holding 16 notes. These can be played back individually or as one continuous sequence playing from the leftmost bank to the rightmost.

Optically it’s in great condition considering its age, with minor signs of use. There are a few scratches on it and little wear and tear on the housing and knobs...

It’s working on 230v and the serial number is: 00222"

EM-801 | MACHINIS$T

$300.00

EM-802 Machinist Sample Track + Hold & Noise consists of 3 individual circuits: a highly stable voltage-controlled sample / track & hold, a noise generator, and a voltage-controlled clock generator. The sample / track & hold section can be manually engaged using the Manual Trigger push button.

The noise generator provides five independent colors of noise. The spectrum specifically consists of Violet, Blue, White, Pink and Red noise. The clock generator’s frequency rate is visualized using the onboard LED indicator, and the sample / track + hold polarity is displayed with corresponding LED indicators.

The onboard slew limiter provides further sound sculpting functionality, wherein the user may select the slew limiter circuit direction and control the slew rate via CV input.

Specifications:

Model: EM-802

Product SKU: 800-0802

Dimensions: 12 HP (3U)

Panel: 2.00 mm Anodized Aluminum

Power: +/- 12V | 8 mA

Sequential Circuits Model 800 Sequencer SN 800 - 772 with Original Foot Pedal

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "I am selling this as non-working unit.It powers up.I think the problem is with the internal clock not working. There is a guy on You Tube who talks about this problem [possibly here, here, or here]. You can manually step through the events. All switches seam to be working .I don't have an analog keyboard anymore,so I can't input any notes or play anything out.I've taken a few pictures showing different numbers and lights on the display. These units are very rare..There were only less than 500 made.Mine is SN 072 .I also have the start/stop foot switch. This unit is also made for the US market (110v).Unlike the other unit listed from Japan that needs a power converter.I was the only owner. It sat in my smoke free personal studio for years. Then it was packed away.I might even have a photo copy of the circuit diagram somewhere that I will include if I find it.There is some scratches and nicks. But for as old as it is ,it's in good shape. No broken switches. All LED's light up.

The 800 consists of 16 toggle switches which enable "cells". Each cell can hold up to 16 note-events each. The cells are loaded from CV (control voltage) keyboard via the CV/gate inputs (1 volt per octave) and can be programmed over a 5-octave range. The Gate is switchable between S-trigger and voltage gate. An internal clock runs from 20Hz up to 5kHz to calculate absolute note length or beat division if being driven externally by a low frequency clock. External input is provided via a specially wired plug. A multi-pin parallel connector is used to hook two or more 800's together. A foot-pedal was available for toggling between record and play modes and start/stop. The CV/gate output is quantized to semitones (1/12). The gate can also be switched between S-trigger and voltage gate."

Sequential Circuits Six-Trak

via this auction

inside a Sequential Circuits Six-Trak

"The Six-Trak was released by Sequential Circuits around 1984 (Model 610).
It is a 6-voice, Polyphonic, Multitimbral, Programmable Synthesizer that has MIDI, a built in Sequencer, an Arpeggiator, and a 4-Octave (C-C) keyboard.

The Six-Trak was one of the first multitimbral MIDI instruments designed to be used with a computer with software that was available for the Commodore 64. The software allowed programming of the six voices and the sequencing.
Along with the DrumTraks drum machine, SCI claimed that with the software and this synth that it was a complete MIDI system.

Each voice can be programmed to any of the 100 internal patches and played as a separate monphonic synth. It can be played either by the external keyboard controller or an external sequencer as well.
The Curtis CEM) 3394 chips were used for each voice which contains one VCO, VCF, VCA, and LFO for each. The VCO has fine and course tuning, glide (portamento) as well as saw, triangle, and pulse (with pulse width modulation) waveforms.
Each Oscillator can be mixed with a noise generator as well and the filter section features controls for Cut-Off Frequency and Resonance.

You can also set the key follow modulation to full, off, or half.

The filter is also self-resonating and can be modulated by each oscillator.

Each voice contains an ADSR Envelope for each the VCO, VCF, and VCA.

The LFO can be routed to the VCO, VCA, and PWM and consist of such waveforms as square and triangle.

There is a single data entry knob used for programming and all the programming is done through menus. However, you can select the knob to control such things as frequency cut off and effect the filter as you play.

You can choose between Polyphonic (with portamento), Unison, and Stack modes (which allows each voice to be set to a different patch and played as one complex mono sound. Mono and Stack modes are selectible between single and multi-triggering modes as well.

The Arpeggiator can be selected as Up, Down, or Assignable (which plays the notes in the order that they were played).

The keyboard can also be split into three areas.

The Pitch-Wheel is fixed at a range of a Mjor 3rd up and a Minor 3rd down.

The Modulation-Wheel controls the LFO amount.

All of the sequences and patches can be backed up via MIDI

The Six-Trak features an 800 note sequencer and 100 patch locations.

The rear of the synth consists of MIDI IN and OUT, a stereo audio jack which doubles as a headphone jack, a footswitch for sustain, and an accessible fuse f it were to ever blow.

The overall size of the Six-Trak is 28"x12"x4 1/2" and weighs approximately 18 pounds."
