circuit bent e-mu command station

YouTube via spunkytoofers — May 10, 2010 — "spunkytoofers sequenthesizer: circuit bent e-mu mp7 and xl7 demonstration. both units are identically the same except they have different sound sets with the option to expand sound sets with rom simms. they both feature breakouts for spunkytoofers mm1 midi module expansion for modular circuit bending over midi.

1st demo is one pattern being mangled manual with a rotary patchbay

2nd demo is a midi multi-setup on the command station with setups for akai ewi, akai mpk25 and sequenced drones. all sounds are randomly circuit bent throughout via midi. the command station itself is used over midi to trigger it's own bends.

-power supply provided for those in north american countries. those in other countries will need to supply their own 12 volt, 500ma adapter negative tip

the kawai k1m is a hybrid synthesizer that relies on pcm sampling and additive synthesis based on harmonics. it's sound can be morphed via the vector joystick. this blend of synthesis along with circuit bending makes for a truly special and unique synthesizer that would be impossible to achieve otherwise.

under midi you have multi-timbral control, aftertouch, modulation, pitchbend, split points and other features that make this a musical instrument. this puts this in a league beyond circuit bent toys. truly a circuit bent musical instrument.

all bends have been carefully selected and are completely stable.

in the video demo below you'll notice i've setup all the bends under midi. the k1m's bends are open ended and can be controlled under midi with spunkytoofers midi modules. all instruments by spunkytoofers have been redesigned to be a modular system which can be controlled or intermodulated with one another. the k1m gives you complete manual, analog controls over the bends but all instruments are designed to be controlled under midi. on the k1m the bends can be modulated by sequencing or triggering over midi and the sample rate control can be modulated either by footcontroller or outputs from a spunkytoofers midi module freely assignable from midi cc's, notes, etc.

along with the instruments ability to be fully controlled under a midi modular system all instruments are also supported. i will back my work for free warranty work and will assist customers with any instrument they purchase from me as they are instruments i work with in my music performance and sound programming.

the video below demonstrates very simple setup under midi. the pads on a akai keyboard controller are used to toggle bends on and off under midi. this would be the same as manual control over bends except that it's easier for me to trigger the bends all from one controller. the banana cords are routed from spunkytoofers midi matrix module to the k1m's banana jacks. the midi module is also sending potentiometer control over midi to the k1m at the 1/4" trs jack with a sequence from the dave smith evolver and via midi mod wheel on the keyboard for more variation. please note i choose to modulate the module under 10k control. this can accept any value foot controller or potentiometer value beyond 10k and is capable of a much larger range of control. no effects are applied and the k1m is recorded direct from the module's output."

the pedal will function as normal without any bends activated..

a very unique and powerful sound processor you won't find elsewhere.

original owners manual and bend diagram emailed to winning bidder.

the pedal works perfectly and cleanly. excellent cosmetic condition. all components, paint and the enclosure that holds all the modifications are brand new and has not been used.

some components might slightly differ from the photo above depending on stock, but i will take great care to match colors and aesthetics.

it would be impossible to start to describe what the pedal does in it's entirety after modifcations.. first there is the delay side of this pedal. this adds alot of synthesizer variants and cut ups and a wide assortment of sound mangling and tonal and synth sound variations. the delay side is capable of being a synth pedal and a bizarre comb filter in it's own right the pitch shifter side can be thought of as pitch shifter and a synth pedal. the synth or pitch tracked sound can be isolated by mixing fully wet onboard the pedal. you can sustain the pitch shifter/synth so that it doesn't track to the input signal. the synth/pitch shifter can then be control via delay time and pitch knob. this synth tone and all the applied bends can be thought of a fully circuit bendable monophonic synthesizer. a few hours of experimentation and you will discover new effects impossble to describe.. here's one descption of just one effect i've discovered from tweaking: cascading flanged sample and hold with infinite variety in a delay loop cycle.. there's plenty more to discover..you'll have to listen to the audio samples and live performance videos to get a good idea of just a few of the sounds available. your input source and the onboard stock pedal controls will interact with all the bends in many different ways. although i use this primarily with feedback loops, pedal chains, or vocals most frequently i've also used this with clarinet, guitar, and a few other acoustic instrument with great results.. if you like to free form improvise with vocals this is probally one of the most intuitive and spontaneous devices with lots of elements of predicatablity vs. randomness to improvise with or against..

the pedal has an alternate wet/dry output independant of the mixed output on the onboard output jack on the boss pedal. these are located on the right side of the interface on 1/8" jacks. this allows you to plug additional outs to be processed independantly of the mixed output. this really allows for some extreme and creative possibilities!!!

regarding the extended pitch/delay time knob. it's an extended range that takes the delay time and stretches the time and pitch further. it will go so low in pitch and time it will granulate the sound, reduce the sample rate (in real time) and acts as a unique decimator in that lower range. the expression pedal input: this duplicates the knob control i've added onto the interface in case your hands are tied up. for use with a 50k expression pedal (i use a yamaha fc7 or equivalent rating, expression pedal or footswitch not included you have to supply your own) and on the left side on thebody of the enclosure i added a 1/4" inch jack so you can plug a momentary or latching footswitch to sample the input on the fly. this type of interface is perfect for those playing a guitar or something where both hands are tied up. here is a video of a previous build called the moon cycle delay that i don't make anymore due to costs/sales. i'm using an analog synth controlled with a wind controller. the moon cycle is a different design then the rabbit hole delays but will give you an idea what kind of control is available with the expression pedal and sample locking on the fly."

Circuit bent Moon Cycle Delay Boss PS2 by Spunkytoofers

via this auction

"The moon cycle delay pedal is a new design by Spunkytoofers for hands free control of a circuit bent boss ps 2 delay pedal.

the boss ps-2 is a dual board pitch shifter/delay pedal. the unit is demonstrated in the one of the delay settings. with the moon cycle stomp switch you can capture 2 second loops, or faster loops to stutter, all the way into self oscillation with help from the foot pedal. in the delay setting you can create some tonal variation as well as adding some synthesizer variants to the delay loop. stomps can be selected to have pattern slicers, circuit bends, and rhythmic sound variation.

the pitch shifter modes creates a synthesizer tone in which the synthesizer can be circuit bent in sound as well as sustained by the moon cycle switch. this allows the user to duet with the synthesizer generated by the pedal as well as isolated the synthesizer to have a fully pitch controllable circuit bent synthesizer.

Here are some more info from my blog"

circuit bent yamaha mu5

via this auction

Note this is the one from these videos.

dsi evolver + circuit bent yamaha mu5 by spunkytoofers

"the above audio is a dsi evolver and dark age tone generator being played simultaneously by an akai ewi4000s wind controller. it's played in real time and recorded direct with no processing. solo mu5 sounds only at 2:45 and on.

mu5 is in excellent cosmetic and functional condition. looks as if it was used very little if at all. i've tested every function and it's 100 percent. these are very rare devices and will only be offering this one on sale on ebay and one is kept for myself, because it's that good. if you want this, this will be your only opportunity to buy this as i can't guarantee i'll come across these again or on any regular basis. because of it's rarity i've reconfigured the bends several times after completing the device. it was really important to readdress the bends to give it the best this device has to offer due to it's rarity and excellent capabilities. needless to say i'm very pleased with the results and i haven't been able to put the device down!!! the item comes with a warranty for as long as i'm in buisness and able!

features:
-smallest hardware midi tone module ever. features: onboard playable interface with over 10 chromatic octaves. 16 channel multi-timbral support over midi including fast midi resolution timing, flexible channel setups, panning, and more!

-onboard playing allows you to use this as a 10 octave midi controller (transits fixed velocity, recieves variable velocity) as well as dual level of control onboard and midi at the same time either for stacked polyphony or multi-timbral madness.

-21 bends on switches. provides all kinds of aliasing, bit crushing effects, stutter, glitch fx, cutups and loops, odd synthesis. the configuration allows maximum flexibility and will provide the user with a vast depth of sound creation possibilities. all bends are 100 percent stable.

-switch provides original clock frequency or sample rate control of 3 octaves on any given note or chord played. injected clock provided by ultra stable getlofi 1799 oscillator. oscillator tuned for maximum stability.

-extention box bolted directly to mu5 chasis
-switch rows are indexed so it facilitates bending interface
-vintage glass lens with brite white light led lighting
-rubber feet added to balance and provide skid free control on flat surfaces.
-outputs audio on stereo 1/8" jack
-midi in/out
-pdf manual and bend diagram emailed to winner
-items comes with fast priority mail or ups shipping with full insurance and tracking

the smallest and most flexible multi-timbral circuit bent hardware module ever made. this crams a deep bent interface that will keep you busy with a wealth of new sounds and 100 percent stability. as much was crammed onboard and kept to a minimal size keeping in mind the portable aesthetic of these devices.as stated before i've readdressed the bends several times and have not slacked in this department. all bends have been readdressed for maximum stability, flexibility and best configuration."

technics wsa1

YouTube via spunkytoofers
"short one for matrix since there doesn't seem to be much on this synth online.
www.spunkytoofers.com
(under construction)"
You can find some specs on the synth here.

Update via spunkytoofers: "it does physical modelling although it's a different approach. it starts with anywhere up to 4 drivers which are samples. the drivers feed up to 4 resonators and those can be blended, triggered, x-y, modulated, etc in alot of different ways.

the yamaha vl1 actually modelled the driver waveform which took up alot of dsp power so the technics used the sample driver waveforms to cut back on the processing and offer polyphony. whereas the vl1 could only handle 2 notes at a time.

i'm told the vl1 can't be touched in the physical modelling realm for realism but it seems really random and more mathematical then musical to setup it and the editors for it are lots of text boxes. but the technics seems alot more approachable and intutive. and easier to visualize "i want to make a reed vibrate a drum head and cross resonate that in a cello body and do that rather than the vl approach.. so it makes alot of sense to me!!! i'm just getting into it but i love the synth so far.."

circuit bent alesis qsr modular synthesizer

YouTube via spunkytoofers. follow-up to this post.
"spunkytoofers wavescaper- circuit bent with a midi interface that allows every bend to be open source/destation controlled under midi cc, program change, and sequenced under midi notes. destinations include effects bends, oscillator bends, stacked bends, sample rate on/off, and independant midi controlled outputs to synch to external gear including the option to interface with other spunkytoofers instruments. interface aligns a 24 point patchbay bend configuration to be selected quickly on the fly which allows real time bent sequencing over an intuitive interface for oscillator or effects.

this demo merges an akai ewi4000s wind controller and the dave smith evolver which is sending it evolving sequence information. the ewi is used as cross modulation to the sequences, note information, envelope control, filter control, as well as controlling sample rate at certain times. no external processing: sound output is directly from the alesis and it's onboard circuit bent quadraverb fx processor

midi circuitry by highly liquid. high precision oscillators by getlofi, and circuit bending the patchman"windtube" patch

seiko ds-250 additive synthesizer

YouTube via spunkytoofers
"pardon my lack of keyboard skills to demonstrate, this is just a short one for matrix since there wasn't much in the way of the seiko keyboards.

this was a craigslist find, hoping to resell but i might want to hold onto it for a little while. it does retro pads nicely. it reminds me of old organs i've used like the conn electric band sans spring reverb or the moog organ sans filter except the seiko is bi-timbral. it has some basic preset sounds selectable for each timbre which define timbre and attack while there are simple controls on each voice for volume, decay, modulation slider with a on/off switch for a delay into the lfo cycle. you can detune the voices up to 14 percent and you can assign each note of polyphony a few selectable intervals. a chorus reminescent of the old junos except this one is on a continous slider from 1-2 chorus in stereo. single voice mode, bitimbral mode or split point voices. key transposable, volume controls, pitch wheel, on/off buttons and a nice layout with simple but nice led displays.

no memory but it's simple to setup. midi in/out. midi seems primitive as i could really only get note on/off to respond although there is a way to recieve each voice over midi by a 16 way rotary switch by each voice 1/ voice 2 output on 1/4" also on the side panel is alternate summed mono output, headphone jack, pitch fine tune, stereo rca outputs. input to footswitch sustain (although mine wasn't working on a regular 1/4" footswitch) input for trs expresion pedal for volume. looks like there is room for modular expansion but i don't have any of the modular components to this keyboard. i could see how easy it would be to approach additive like this with really simple controls and some of the expanders but as you might imagine controls are limitied.makes for a nice retro pad machine. even though it's simple i like it because it's not trying to be anything else but itself."

circuit bent modular synthesizer

YouTube via spunkytoofers. follow-up to this post
"signal path: circuit bent alesis quadrasynth into moog mf-102 followed by spunkytoofers rabbit hole delay the demo starts with a dry track from the bent quadrasynth and mixes fx in manually. the sine lfo on the ring modulator is gradually mixed in depth through the demo.

spunkytoofers wavescaper: circuit bent alesis modular synthesizer is controlling overall sample rate of the synth, the mf 102, and the rabbit hole delay pedal. control modulation information is coming from the midi out of the dsi evolver merged with the thru out ffrom the alesis and ewi4000s.. dsi is sending evolving sequences to mf 102 and the rabbit hole delay while global tempo is maintained on tap tempo. the ewi is controlling the synth itself as well as sample rate on breath, while keyed pitch is tracked to the rabbit hole for more variance in delay modulation.

midi circuitry is by highlyliquid, precision oscillators by getlofi, and in this demo a circuit bent patch off the patchman s4 plus bank moviestrings2"
