Synth Rorschach #41 Christmas lights..... or is it a rhythm sequencer

Published on Dec 21, 2015 organfairy

Literally turning a synth rorschach into a working synth device. Be sure to see the Rorschach and Holidays channels below for more posts in each category!

"I found this old telephone exchange device in my garage. I remember buying it quite a while ago. But for some reason I have not used it for something untill now.

I converted it to a kind of drum sequencer somewhat inspired by the Eko Computerhythm from the 1970s and it can control the little drum synthesizer I build some years ago.

The music is "No milk today" that was a major hit by Herman's Hermits in 1966. I play it on my Wersi Prisma DX-5 while the rhythm comes from another distinctive drum machine namely the Wersimatic II."

Synth Pacifier?

via this auction

Synth Rorschach #38

This one is a bit of a reverse synth rorschach. Usually it's a non synth item that reminds me of a particular synth or synths. When I saw the small thumbnail for this one, my first thought was what the heck is a pacifier doing in my synth feeds?! I guess it could be a little game piece or top as well. Steampunk eye piece? Synths are messing with my mind!.. That and it's a bit early for me. But no, don't use this as your pacifier, I'm guessing it's not food grade plastic.

Synth Rorschach #60: The Outer Limits

This Synth Rorschach in via Atomic Shadow.

"Is It A Synth? No. It's from the first episode of The Outer Limits which aired in September, 1963. The Galaxy Being starred Cliff Robertson as a radio station owner who used his transmitter to reach out across the galaxy. After establishing contact with a being from another world, a series of events (brought about by his carping wife) leads to the physical transmission of the Galaxy Being to Earth. A heavy handed moral about the human race being prone to violence ensues.

The episode has some great examples of mid 20th century Gizmology. Gizmology is term that I coined to describe movie tech that is designed to look all "Science-y". If you look at the photo, you see what appears to be a Eurorack synth! Just out of the frame, on the right, there is the obligatory reel to reel tape recorder. In those days if you wanted your set to look like real science, you had to have an oscilloscope displaying a sine wave and a tape recorder. This episode lacks a scope, but makes up for it with that crazy nest of wires.

An article about the episode here...

I started watching that episode on Prime the other night. When that scene happened I thought, 'How did Cliff Robertson get his hands on Richard Divine's euro rig? In 1963!'."

Bottom reminds me of Dewanatron meets Folktek. Top right reminds me of Anyware's Tinysizer.

Synth Rorschach #37: Vintage Beckman 999 IC Tester

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

This one in via Loscha via this auction.

This one should be pretty obvious. It appears to be the exact same part used in the synth I'm thinking about. If so, it would be interesting. It would mean the synth manufacturer either sourced it or produced it and made it available to other manufacturers. If anyone knows, feel free to comment. Update via Colin f in the comments: these were made by a manufacturer name Cherry. I actually posted some here previously.

"Here is a vintage Beckman model 999 IC Tester. Just what you need to test old TTL and other IC's."

Giving this one the Synth Rorschach label for the look of this pedal. It's like a Waldorf Q and MFB Dominion Club had a baby.

This is the first one to be featured on the site. Below is a quick intro video from Mooer.

Synth Rorschach #21 - Mike & Rich - Mr. Frosty

Uploaded on Mar 2, 2009 DAVO1984FI·99 videos

This might be the first Synth Rorschach post that is actually meant to depict a synth. I see Buchla blue.
via Jesse Creed on Facebook aka The Passenger, who posted it when asked what does he do with his eurorack system below. I thanked Jesse for tagging me on this one as we wouldn't have had this post otherwise. He replied "Synthendipity". I think he just coined it. See the Google search screenshot below. :)

YouTube video description: "Extract from the l.p. ' Expert Knob Twiddlers ' ( 1996 ) , performed by the combo Richard D. James and Micheal Paradinas: released by Rephlex Records.
The song is basically a stange and funny slow techno tune, with clear groovy taste filled all long the song, and some of the classic aphex' s ambient sounds. In the second part of the track the beats evolve into some kind of weird acid house."

Synth Rorschach #62: Dream Synth Studio Completed!

This one is in via Gerard:

"My dream synth studio completed!"

Spotted on The Vintage Beauty of Soviet Control Rooms.

---

The guy on the left looks like he's actually playing a synth with a vocoder. Right looks like he's reading a patch layout, and the center guy looks like he is admiring a sequence and/or watching a monitor above. All while wearing fast food caps!

Synth Rorschach #43: Rogue Wave - "What Is Left To Solve" (Official Audio)

Published on Feb 8, 2016 Easy Sound Recording Co.

Whole lotta synth rorschach going on in this one. What do you see? For me, the punch cards reminded me of the 1974 RMI KC-1 Keyboard Computer ; the switches as well for that matter.

It oozes sequencers for me.  We haven't had any new synthesis engines in quite some time...
