Electronic Music 101

via daddio:

"Your old classified post reminded me of a 'document' I saved from my college days. Circa 1972, this was handed out in my Electronic Music 101 class at U.M.B.C. (University of Maryland Baltimore County) taught by Felix Powell. Textbook for the class was Allen Strange's Electronic Music (which I still have), the one with the purple graphic on the cover. Our studio consisted of a Moog series III with the sequencer complement, a pair of suitcase Synthi's, a Teac four track w/SOS and a pair of Revox half track A77's (yes, we did 'fripper' them ;-).

Thought you and your readers might get a kick out of it.

btw,
These tunes were made in that studio:
01_Alma.mp3 (my first ever piece - no pun intended - lol)
02_DOM.mp3 ('vocals' added in '99) [not safe for work]

peace bro,

Vintage ARP 2600 Synthesizer **RARE** - $4800

"I have a vintage Arp 2600 that I'm looking to get sell. It was previously owned by Roger Waters, and is now in the Thievery Corporation (ESL) studios. Its in great condition, but currently taking up too much space in the studio. It is complete with the matching cases, and we are having it serviced right now to ensure that everything is working properly before being sold. If you would like to see pictures, please let me know! We can even provide the receipt for the work as soon as its done.

I have seen ARPs in worse condition sell on ebay for $4,500+, Considering the history and the condition of this particular ARP, we would like to make sure we are getting what it's worth."

via this Craigslist post.

We haven't had a poll in a while, so why not...

Update: click here for some images of the unit courtesy of daddio of tapewarm who contacted the seller.

Udpate: and a response from the seller:
"I completely understand that you would like more proof, but it was meant more as a point of interest rather than the only selling point. The current owner has had it for years, and really has no way of proving that Roger Waters owned it, it was just a little bit of interesting history on this particular ARP. I can however, prove that it is in Thievery Corporation studios."

Peter Zinovieff & EMS

"Electronic Music Studios (London) Ltd. was formed in 1969 by Dr. Peter Zinovieff to market innovative ideas arising from his private studio and interest in musical applications of computers. Over the next ten years many seminal products were released and many talented designers worked for the company. EMS had its own peculiar brand of British eccentricity which could be both endearing and annoying, but should be viewed in the context of true pioneering. It is easy to copy and follow others, but not to think up new ideas in the first place and EMS had no shortage of originality. The EMS influence was significant and can be traced into many contemporary products." Click here for the full article including more images. Matris Terra Ultionis

If you have been following this site over the past couple of months you should be familiar with the work of Richard Lainhart and Todd Barton (vgermuse). You will recall the Buchla 200e compositions from Richard posted here and the Akai EVI compositions from Todd posted here. You might also recall daddio of Tapewarm from these posts.

After hearing the brilliant compositions by Richard and Todd, Daddio contacted them about creating a new composition featuring theirs. They gave him the ok and Matris Terra Ultionis is the result. You can listen it here.

part one features:
metaliton, buchla2Crop, eviExtended, and buchlaStormBirds.
mixed with my WarStorm samples and an old waterphone recording

part two:
Thonk and SlowEvolution
w/more WarStorm samples and Launch

part three:
Orchestra of the Damned, SpaceMetal, buchlaDemo2, buchlaDrumSolo, eviSerge and eviSerge2
yet more from Warstorm (lol) and my My Hydrogen Gas Tank

Regarding the sources of the compositions:
"Thonk and Orchestra of the Damned are from Richard.
200e/Haken continuum

WarStorm, Launch and My Hydrogen Gas Tank are my compositions.
I used a Doepfer modular, twin Kaoss pads and a waterphone along with a boatload of samples.

All other files are Todd's: metaliton, buchla2Crop, eviExtended, and buchlaStormBirds, SpaceMetal, buchlaDemo2, buchlaDrumSolo, eviSerge and eviSerge2.

Via daddio of tapewarm:

"I had fun with the Metasonix filter that I won at the Nor Cal AH get together. Big ups to Mr.s Metasonix and Brian Comnes. Some mp3s and pics here. Brian actually won the item first and declined the prize, making it possible for my name to be drawn next instead. Now THAT'S the kind of host legends are made of."

This is really good stuff. The pics link is under the disco ball when you get there. There's a grooving cat in the set. Thanks daddio!

Daddio and Henry Strike Back

This one via daddio of tapewarm.

"Henry brought over his Yamaha CS2X . We made bootiful musics together. See for yerself: link.

also in the mix are a Nord Rack 2, Electribe ESX, Kaoss Pad 2, and Doepfer Modular. These are impromptu live recordings - no mixing/mastering/turd polishing - yet. Except 3n4 which is a simply a pairing of , well, jam 3 & 4."

That'd be bootiful allright. : ) Nice Shots. That Doepfer is on fire!

Sonomarinos

Via Brian Comnes: "Here's a link to some tracks I made with daddio, a fan of yours, a synth buddy of mine and sometimes AH contributor...you even did 3 posts on him (aka tapewarm) . Anyway he lives about an hour up the road from me and we try to get together every 5 or 6 weeks and do something. Last night we got 2 tracks in 81506a and b. These are one take affairs, mistakes and all, with only a little EQ post recording. Last night I was using Live's Operator and Big Tick Angelina soft synths with my MIDI guitar, drums courtesy of Microtonic and Gene was peppering it up with a Kaoss Pad and Nord Rack 2.

The other 2 tracks (Daddio1A and 4) were from May and were our first collaboration we recorded - somewhere in there is an OB1, UltraProteus , Kaoss pad and miscellanea, again both are one takes.

I am definitely not looking for a post here.....I mean you do have standards....I just thought I'd grant your wish to hear something.... maybe next time Gene and I will snap some photos .... ..and be warned these are nothing like Stefan Trippler puts out, just a couple of old synth guys making up something on the spot.

Peace Brian

PS the handle sonomarinos is because I live in Marin County and Gene lives in Sonoma County"

Don't sell yourself short Brian. I like it. : ) BTW, I think you just made a bit of Matrixsynth history with the smallest image in a post ever, unless of course, you count my favicon post.
