Update: some updates in grey below.

"In December 2012 I was visiting a friend in Vancouver, BC and he showed me his working example of the legendary Buchla 700 analog / digital hybrid synthesiser. This highly advanced synthesiser was developed and produced in the late 1980s by Californian electronic instrument pioneer Don Buchla, using proprietory hardware and software components. About 12 of these machines were ever produced, and there are possibly only 4 working examples left in existance. My friend showed me some of its sound producing capabilities and then left me to explore for myself. Presented here are the results of the hour or so that I had alone with this machine

Donald Buchla began makng electronic musical instruments in 1963 with his 100 series modules appearing in 1965, which introduced the concept of analog voltage control to musical instruments (bode did it in 1959 and moog in 1964 - Moog started work with Herb Deutsch  on the first Moog modular systems in 1963). He then produced the 200 series modules in the early 1970s and continued developing systems and modules of greater complexity utilising digital control and eventually microprocessor control, culminating in the 700 system in the late 1980s. More recently Buchla introduced the 200e modules which he continues to develop

The five compositions were recorded directly to computer using overdubbing in places. No additional processing was applied. See below for a full overview of the Buchla 700 system

Isolation No.7 - Buchla 200 #2

Published on Apr 10, 2020 zack dagoba

"Part 7, and final installment, of my first ISOLATION SERIES, exploring self-playing patches on modular systems. You might notice that I have been busy this week making a new cabinet for my Buchla 200 system (the first piece in this series features my original cabinet, which I will be using to put more 100 series modules in at some point). This is a prototype cabinet made from plywood to make sure I am getting the dimensions right. It is based on the original design from the 1971 Series 200 Data Sheet. The final one will be made from walnut, but I can't get hardwood anywhere at the moment due to the lockdown"

You can put this on in the background while you are doing your self-isolating, it might help pass the time?"

Sergernetics

zack dagoba

"I have been exploring the idea of Cybernetic processes in modular synthesis a bit this week. It follows seeing a really interesting series over on La Synthese Humaine’s YouTube channel

So, this patch might seem basic at first but actually its doing something quite interesting - it is using Cybernetics to play by itself

It is generating its own patterns by using feedback loops in the CV path and a non-linear CV circuit (in this case the Serge Wave Multiplier) to modify them

By setting the CV inputs on the returning feedback paths carefully, the patterns come to life and start to do things by themselves

In other words, there is just one single clock being used to generate the timing, and the variations are caused by the feedback path. There is no additional use of random generators or other clocks playing against each other, and no intervention from me

I have a lot more to explore, especially by using the Cybernetic principal on other systems like the Buchla, the Modcan or the Emu Modular - all of which have provisions for achieving self-playing patches using these ideas"

Polyphonic Buchla 100!?!

zack dagoba

"I managed to get a Buchla 114 touch plate module from La67. To be honest I didn't really know what exactly this module would do functionally, as there are not many videos up featuring its, especially for what I wanted it to be able to do - namely trigger multiple VCOs and VCAs to turn the Buchla 100 into a fully polyphonic instrument - but to my immense joy it actually did what I had hoped for = HAPPY

So this patch uses 4 x 144 VCOs (8 oscillators in total), and 8 VCAs (4 x 110 gates and - CHEAT ALLERT - 4 x Roland 100M VCAs). I'm waiting on a replica 107 module that was made to compliment the 114 (10 x VCAs)

The cool thing is that the 114 has 10 CV outs that can be used as 10 envelopes, and then the touch-controls can also help articulate the notes. It seems a very clever design (as always from The Don) and I wonder why I have never seen anyone else use the Buchla 100 as a supremely flexible 10-note polyphonic synth (not bad for 1960s technology - as far as I know, the 1974 Oberheim 4-Voice is known as the first commercially available polysynth, but this is clearly not the case!)"

Shapes In Space - Vintage Buchla 100 Album by Benge

"This album was made using a Buchla 100 modular synthesiser system from the 1960s

No other sound sources were used, or any external processing. The pieces were built up by layering different tracks upon each other, a technique known as 'sound on sound' recording

I deliberately wanted to avoid using regular harmonic, melodic and rhythmic elements on this record, preferring to let the Buchla speak its own very particular language

Modular Moog Buchla FREEFORM

video upload by zack dagoba

"Here is a self-playing patch on the Moog IIIC with a little help from the Buchla-format Gaussian module by Magnetic Freak

The patch is as follows: 3 Moog VCOs go into 3 VCAs (and one vial the LPF also) and these are being enveloped and triggered from 3 outputs of the Gaussian

The pitches also come from the Gaussian, but are being modified by the 2 Moog sequencers to give them some variation

It all goes into the Moog Matrix Mixer so I can do panning, eq and also add delay into the mix, in this case a Moog-format digital unit from Synthetic Sound Labs. It is VC-able, and is really wonky and lo-fi - but I love it as its very unpredictable and is providing the white-noisey percussive sounds when it gets CVs from the sequencer

Thats pretty much the patch - I am not interacting with it - its completely self-aware and a bit like a crazy Moog jazz band that doesn't know what its supposed to be doing but does it anyway

Video is shot on a Sony DSR500 camera going through the Panasonic MX50 FX mixers"

Buchla 100 - 100 noises 02

video upload by zack dagoba

"Here are two of the rarest standard Buchla 100 modules, the 185 FREQUENCY SHIFTER and the 191 SHARP CUTOFF FILTER. Actually I didn't realise how rare the 191 actually was until I heard Mark Verbos speaking about it on The Source Of Uncertainty Podcast. As he points out, when do you ever see a vintage photo of a 100 system with one in it? (Answer: not very) Both these are vintage units with green ink - I was so lucky to get them as part of the incredible tiny system I bought ages ago (bottom section of the left-hand cabinet, plus the 112 touch plates). In this patch I am doing the trick where you feedback the filter signal a bit using the 106 mixer to get it to be more resonant. Its in Bandpass mode, and sounds completely great"
