'69 Moog Modular --Not dead yet!

via CZ Rider on this VSE thread (click for the thread with more images).
"Just resurected an old Moog Modular System 1P, built in August 1969. I aquired this Moog last month from a person that stored it in his attic for the past 17 years. After ordering the parts I needed to first rescue the 38 year old power supply, the final part arrived this past Tuesday. So I wasted no time installing the fresh caps and wire-wound trimmers. Got a nice steady +12 and -6 VDC, and I was ready to fire it up!
I still have to calibrate and clean the individual modules, but was able to coax some sound out of the old guy. Here is a small sample of the first music this machine has made in years. Using a Dotcom 960 clone to run a sequence, the old Moog started churning out what sounded very old school Berlin style rythm. Recorded live as I played a Synclavier II (violin) and my 2 dollar soundblaster (flute) over top. moogmodular.mp3"

How to Make Your Sound Sing with Vocoders

"The vocoder has been a novelty staple (if that isn't an oxymoron) of pop music for more than 30 years. Even if you've never heard the word vocoder, you've heard the smoothly sexy yet oddly alien sounds that emanate from this device. In the '70s and '80s, vocoder was used on songs by Kraftwerk, Stevie Wonder, Bon Jovi, Donna Summer, Phil Collins, Laurie Anderson, Pink Floyd, Styx, and many other artists. (See the "Famous Vocoder Songs" sidebar.) In more recent years, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Beck, Britney Spears, Madonna, Marilyn Manson, and other pop icons have dialed up the sound of the vocoder."
