Building a phaser part 1

YouTube via MusicMiK. follow-up to this post.
"This is a simple project - i will build a clone of the Small Stone phaser as a floor effects unit with some modifications to add some more control over the sound.

Dur to the simplicity of this project, i decided to document all steps, starting with making the PCB for it, ending with the tests. So not all videos appear at once, but i think this should happen within 3 weeks or so. Make sure to come back and see if new parts appeared with the time.

This is part 1 showing all the steps up to a PCB ready to be etched."

Syntom Article Featuring Warren Cann of Ultravox

Jesper found a PDF he had an an article featuring Warren Cann of Ultravox on the SynTom. You can find it here. Does anyone know the source of the article?

Update via Jesper: "According to a guy on the Ultravox EV-forum the Syntom article is from a magazine called "Electronics & Music Maker". The guy also says, that he is sure Warren said he would use it on Rage In Eden - and that he did that." E&MM also confirmed by slabman in the comments.

Old Synth and Sampler Borrowed from school for summer

"My high school let me borrow these goodies for the summer.

Clockwise from left:

To the left, cut off, is my HS-60 (a Roland Juno 106 with speakers)

Up top is the Akai S-612 sampler that used those awful 2.8" typewriter-style quick-disk diskettes. The top rack is the drive, the bottom is the sampler.

On the right is a Yamaha DX100

Below that is a Siel DX-600 Expander"

Musicrow Vintage Strings MkIII

"Vintage Strings MkIII is a new super realistic virtual string machine that perfectly recreates the lush sound of analog string machines.

The string machine (also called string ensemble or string synth) was invented by ken freeman in 1970 as an attempt to replicate the sound of orchestral strings. It was so successful that it shortly became beloved instrument in its own right.

The distinctive sound of vintage string machines like the Arp Solina or the Crumer Performer can be heard on numerous music productions. It has been used by various musicians like: Pink Floyd, Air, Beck, The Eagles, Kraftwerk, The Cure, Joy Division, Josh Wink, Morrisey, Tangerine Dream, Keane, Japan, and New Order to name few.

Like these old machines, Vintage Strings MkIII is a synthesizer that was especially designed to produce rich warm string pads. It make no use samples, so any of its presets can be tweaked, and new ones can be easily created, making Vintage Strings MkIII as user friendly as it is toneful.

And now, The third version of Vintage Strings presents various new features that expand its sound capabilities and make it even better:

- The color control in the timbre section enables the creation of new beautiful choirs and pad sounds.
- In the envelope section you can now choose the analog envelope mode, for an accurate emulation of vintage string machines envelopes.
- The reverb section was completely revamped and now enables you to select between a smooth studio reverb and an authentic spring reverb.
- The new 7th buttons enables each strings section to play seven notes above the original pitch, for thicker string sounds.
- New user interface.

If you desire the classic sound of analog strings machines, don't miss Vintage Strings MkIII!"

SYNTHI 100 at Cantos museum

"SYNTHI 100 utilizes a patch board instead of cables. You can see Brandon, the interpreter, pointing to it in this photo. The SYNTHI 100 had the coolest knobs, of which a crop shot of it is my current avatar.

I think I failed to mention I took around a couple hundred photos during this tour, yes?

Visited the Cantos foundation museum of electronic instruments and keyboards in February 2009 and got a lovely tour of the facilities. Took a lot of pictures & videos.

Today is Tuesday! Another tour tonight (I'll be armed with tripod and a clear empty memory card)."

Cinematic Session Yamaha GS 2 vs the MOTM 420

YouTube via RothHandle

"This is a short sippet of Matti Bye recording the elusive Yamaha GS-2, a very early FM synth. The Yamaha GS-2 is being treated through a MOTM-420 filter (a MS-20 filter) which is being modulated by a Synthesizer.com q960 sequencer. This music was recorded for a film we are working on.

This little snippet was shot at my studio in Stockholm. It is called Roth Händle studios and it has been up and running for just about ten years now. Starting out as a small bedroom studio and then evolving into what it is today. If you are curious anout the studio please visit www.roth-handle.nu If you want to hear some music from the studio please go to Myspace and search for Molesome."

"A short little snippet of Matti Bye recording the Yamaha GS-2. This sound is when no sound is actually loaded into the synth so it is odd and unpredictavble...The background sound is a Roland VP-330+ through the MOTM-410 filter."
