Dave Smith Talk on the History of Synths Tomorrow at Stanford University's CCRMA Open to the Public

via CCRMA

Hopefully someone will record it and put it online for those of us that can't make it. Update: embed below!

"Dave Smith will discuss the interesting history of synths, moving from analog to digital to software and now back to analog.

Bio: Dave Smith founded Sequential Circuits in the mid-70s. In 1977, he designed the Prophet-5, the world's first microprocessor-based musical instrument. This revolutionary product was the world's first polyphonic and programmable synth, and set the standard for all synth designs that have followed. The Prophet instruments played a major part in the recordings of all popular music styles, and are still prized by musicians today.

Dave is also generally known as the driving force behind the generation of the MIDI specification in 1981-in fact, he coined the acronym. In 2013, Dave received a Grammy in recognition of his role in the development of MIDI. After Sequential, Dave was President of DSD, Inc, an R&D division of Yamaha, where he worked on physical modeling synthesis and software synthesizer concepts. He then started the Korg R&D group in California, designing the Wavestation products and other technology. He then took over as President at Seer Systems and developed the world's first software based synthesizers.

In 2002, Dave founded Dave Smith Instruments to develop new hardware instruments like the Evolver, Mopho, and Prophet synthesizers, as well as the Tempest drum machine, co-designed with Roger Linn. His latest instrument is the hybrid digital/analog Prophet-12 synthesizer."

At 13:10: MIDI could have been named UMII pronounced YouMe which stood for (Universal Music Instrument Interface). The name was suggested by Roland's founder Ikutaro Kakahashi.

"This is a forgotten underdog from the mid 1980s.

Has a very warm analog sounds think pad Oberheim pads, Moog basses/leads/efx but can easily emulate those PPG/DX7 digital sounds(epianos/bells etc.

The beauty about this particular unit is the RARE Angel City Audio Turbo Upgrade.

The Upgrade allows you to split the synth allowing two different sounds at one time essentially making it Bi-timbral polyphonic. You can also detune and layer sounds!! None of these features are found in the original versions. This was an expensive upgrade back in the day.

Very clean synthesizer no broken keys, chips etc..."

Update: some info on the mod via musitronics.de, translated into Googlish:

"This expansion opens up entirely new possibilities with your DW / EX 8000 synthesizer. The most important new features are:

Splitting and Doubling Sounds
Local off function
Key Transpose, Random MG Waveform and Compare function
Two MIDI transmit and receive channels
Compare and MIDI Program Change to all 128 sounds
Our new operating system extends the functionality of your DW / EX 8000 by far. Splitting and doubling sounds arise completely new sound possibilities. With the Local ON / OFF function to control a part of the keyboard one or more expanders, while playing with the other part your DW / EX 8000th Since the DW / EX 8000 now has two MIDI transmit and receive channels has, even gives the expansion a 2-fold MIDI Multi mode. The voice allocation is done dynamically.

There are a total of 8 new parameters. Of these, 6 parameters - 18 (Sound B), 27 (Key Transpose), 28 (Detune AB), 36 (split mode), 37 (Split Point) and 38 (Bal AB.) - Are stored for each sound with , Of course, the new parameters with the old sound settings are fully compatible. Each previous sound adjustment may be supplemented by the new parameters. Of course, you can save the new parameters in both the cartridge, as well as in our memory expansion

New features of the DW / EX 8000 Expansion:

Parameter 18: Sound B
Adjustable from 11-88. This parameter specifies which sound to be used as a second sound.

Parameter 27: Key Transpose
With this parameter you can raise the pitch of your DW 8000 by semitones up to one octave.

Parameter 28: Detune AB
Fine tuning between Sound A and Sound B with 7 different settings. This is particularly helpful in Doubling Sounds, which beats between four (!) Oscillators arise.

Parameter 36: Split Mode
This is the most important parameter of the extension. It determines whether the DW 8000 works as far as gesplittetes Keyboard or Doubling Mode. The Local ON / OFF function is hereby realized.

Mode 1: The DW 8000 works as usual
Mode 2: Local OFF Lower Manual. The lower part of the keyboard is turned off, the upper part produces DW 8000 Sounds. However, the MIDI signals of the entire keyboard will be issued.
Mode 3: Local OFF Upper Manual. The upper part of the keyboard is off, the under part produces DW 8000 Sounds. However, MIDI signals are output of the whole keyboard.
Mode 4: DW 8000 Local OFF. There are no longer generates sounds from the keyboard, but also sends MIDI data and received.
Mode 5: Splitting. Here DW works 8000 in splitting mode. The lower part of the keyboard produces sound, which you have selected. The upper part is the sound again, which you have set with parameter 18th
Mode 6: Splitting. Inverted behavior as fashion. 5
Mode 7: Doubling Sounds. There are superimposed Sound A and Sound B. They resound in the lower part of the keyboard to the split point.
Mode 8: Mode 7, however, the instrument sounds from the split point in the upper part of the keyboard.
Parameter 37: Split Point
This parameter allows you to adjust the position of the split point, adjustable to all 61 buttons.

Parameter 38: Balance AB
Determines the balance of the volume between A and B.

Parameter 78: MIDI Mode
Establishing the mapping for the MIDI channels A and B to the sounds A and B for the reception and transmission of MIDI data.

Parameter 88: MIDI Channel B
Works in principle like parameter 84, but for the second MIDI channel B.

The following parameters can be split:
11 OSC 1 OCTAVE, 12 OSC 1 WAVEFORM (1-8) OR (9-12) 14 AUTO BEND SELECT 15 AUTO BEND MODE 16 AUTO BEND TIME, 17 AUTO BEND INTENSITY, 21 OSC 2 OCTAVE, 22 OSC 2 WAVEFORM , (1-8) OR (9-12), 24 INTERVAL, 25 DETUNE, 27 KEY Trnspose, 31 VCF Cutoff, VCF 33 KEYBOARD TRACK, 35 VCF EG INT, 41 VCF ATTACK, DECAY 42 VCF, VCF 43 BREAK POINT, 44 VCF SLOPE, 45 VCF SUSTAIN, 46 VCF RELEASE, 47 VCF VELOCITY SENSE, 51 VCA ATTACK, 52 VCA DECAY, 53 VCA bREAKPOINT, 54 VCA SLOPE, 55 VCA SUSTAIN, 56 VCA RELEASE, 57 VCA VELOCITY SENSE, 66 OSC BEND , 67 VCF BEND, 77 PORTAMENTO TIME, 82 VCF AFTERTOUCH AND 83 VCA AFTERTOUCH

The remaining parameters are always determined by sound A.

Furthermore a random for the MG waveforms available. Finally, we have the DW 8000 is programmed to the last played sound is dialed is switched on again the instrument. The Compare function allows a comparison of the sounds while editing. If simultaneously pressing the PROGRAM button when selecting a sound, so be output via the MIDI interface Program Change messages from 64-127."
