Light and Sound

"As the image on the screen changes, different frequencies are induced in the telephone pickup coil. The software measures those changes once per second. If the difference in frequency crosses a certain threshold, the software either triggers a MIDI note-on event or randomizes all of the synthesizer parameters, or both."

The software synthesizer used is Sophia by Audiobulb.

"The pickup coil is going to the sound card input on my laptop. The software hosting the Sophia VST is called Analog Box 2.42. It can act as a modular synth/effect software in its own right a la PureData, Reaktor, etc. I put together a 'circuit' in ABox2 that measures the frequency of the signal coming into the sound card. That measurement is taken every second and compared with the previous measurement. If the difference exceeds a specific threshold value (ex. a difference of 30Hz or more), it triggers the synth, or changes its parameters, or does both.

Those pickup coils can be great for getting interesting sounds out of electronic devices. In fact, I got the idea to do this from another post on the Matrixsynth site where someone was feeding sounds from the coil into a small hardware modular setup. :)"

A Single Tool Cuts A Clear Path on the Yamaha Electone YC-45 SN 7509

Pretty cool to see the individual synth/organ by serial number on this one.

"For the seventh installment of the Preservation Sound video series, we examine how an unplanned encounter with a highly unusual instrument can provide direction for a vibrant and idiosyncratic body of musical work. Fans of modern music are likely to be familiar with duo Mates of State, who have released seven internationally-distributed albums over the past fourteen years. Mates' first three releases were nearly solely arranged around a traditional drum kit, the duo's two voices, and a single other instrument: the circa 1971 Yamaha Electone YC45 Combo Organ. We first heard Mates of State in 2002 and were immediately impressed by the raw, massive sound that was conjured up through such a minimal setup. As the band explains in our program, their unusual sound was not the result of any strategic planning, but rather a willingness to embrace the tool that they happened to have available. Mates' relationship with the YC45 is an indelible example of the strength that can be found in limitations. The video features exclusive new in-studio performances.
