AJH Synth Low Pass Filters Compared: 3 Eurorack VCF's - Sequences & Sweeps (dry audio/no talking)

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A purely functional video this week - we're sometimes asked which filter we'd recommend, but really it's a subjective thing, so here's some examples of the current 3 AJH Synth Low Pass filters compared, with both a sequence and static sawtooth sweeps. The settings are mostly kept similar, bearing in mind that it's impossible to get an exact match with different VCF designs. The video timeline has an index, so you can skip to particular sections by using the links below, or by hovering the mouse over the timeline on the video player.

Filters featured:
Transistor Ladder Filter (based on the R.A.Moog Minimoog)
Sonic XV Diode Ladder Wave Filter (based on the 'muSonics' Sonic V)
Gemini 2412 Dual Vintage State Variable Filters (based on the Oberheim SEM)

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #123: Wersi MK1 - Song 2

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the second song with the Wersi MK1. It's a 12 voice synthesizer from 1986 using a kind of additiv synthesis based on complex volume and pitch envelopes for up to 32 digitally generated harmonic's. In addition it has a single analog filter (in my version it's an SSM2045 filter chip) for all voices (paraphonic use).

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
MK1 - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)

What's interesting is a previous one posted here was missing the bottom section. The top is the controller, and the bottom is the sound engine. See the pic of the back below.

"With Midi, OS 6.0. eproms of OS 8.3 included plus a brand new battery and ppg connection cable to connect to a waveterm or ppg Wave. New switch power supply and excellent cosmetically and technical condition. Extremely rare. With midi around 30 units built. No scratches. It already works with velocity and some other midi control functions"

"OB8 was fully serviced by Bell Tone Synth works in Philly four months ago and is working great. I also installed a new Fatar semi-weighted synth-action keybed, the same one used on current production high-end synths like the Minimoog Voyager, Prophet 10, and Schmidt 8."

"This Prophet VS has been meticulously serviced and is working exactly as it should.

Tech notes:
Cleaned unit inside and out.
Cleaned all pots and key contacts.
Replaced display with a much better one that can easily be seen in the dark.
Replaced battery.
Reloaded patches.
Replaced aftertouch sensors as the originals rarely work anymore.
Replaced power supply capacitors as a preventative measure.
Reflowed certain solder joints as a preventative measure.
Performed multiple burn in tests.
Verified that all functions are working properly.

Note: As usual, the aftertouch response on the bottom and top keys may not work as well as other parts of the keyboard, due to design."

"This unit was meticulously overhauled over a whopping 11 hours - which isn't a lot for a vintage polyphonic synth but is a lot for this model considering its relatively low resale value. The preventative work we did to this unit should make it more valuable than others you may find, which is reflected in its higher than usual price.

This unit was stripped down and cleaned inside and out. The 80017 chips all had their resin coating chemically removed as a preventative measure since they commonly fail when this coating isnt removed. Most people replace these chips with new clones instead of refurbishing them, but we like keeping parts original since that matters to many of our customers - if they wanted a synth made from new parts, they'd buy a new synth, not a vintage one. All tact switches were replaced for flawless operation. Power supply capacitors were replaced as a preventative measure. Removed, cleaned and lubed all pots. Removed old battery and replaced it with a new one. Cleaned all switches. Tested all functions systematically, twice. MIDI LED replaced. All tests passed. This unit sounds great and works great and should make its next owner very happy. Runs off 220 volts, so if you're not in a country where the voltage is 220v, you'll need an external transformer."
