An Arab And A Jew Make Sweet Love by Ian Richter

A new release by supporting MATRIXSYNTH member, Ian Richter.

"IDR-Newswire / TEL AVIV / May 29th 2018 / Tel Aviv-based South African-born musician and producer Ian Richter has just released his first LP under the moniker Ricatelli. The album, entitled “An Arab and a Jew Make Sweet Love”, offers an eclectic electro-acoustic collection of mid-tempo grooves layered with everything from Eastern percussion to modular synthesizers.

When asked about what inspired the album, Richter recalled the scandal surrounding Dorit Rabinyan’s 2014 novel All the Rivers, explaining, “'It's insane to me that a book telling the love story of an Arab and a Jew was removed from the high school curricula in Israel. With all the literature about war and conflict, why remove the one positive example?'

The album is mostly instrumental, and takes the listener on a journey through a variety of beat-based music genres. Richter produced the album at his home studio, recording a colorful palette of instruments including synthesizers, guitars, samplers, and drums. Some tracks include vocal takes, mostly performed by Richter, with the addition of manipulated samples and computer-generated speech.

Richter views the root of the Middle East conflict as 'a segregation caused by fear-mongering that exists in many parts of the world', saying, 'As a musician, I thought I'd just point to something that's already going on - love between Arabs and Jews. Oh, and yes, they have sex too.'

The album 'An Arab and a Jew Make Sweet Love - By Ricatelli' is available on all major streaming platforms and online music stores.

About Ian Richter
Having lived in two of the world’s most conflicted regions - South Africa and Israel - Ian Richter has been exposed to culture through a unique set of circumstances. Growing up in the sleepy surfer town of Durban, Richter eagerly absorbed the sonic influences offered to him, drawn to both Western and African music. Moving to Israel at the age of 18 offered him the chance to connect to a more active alternative music scene. Tel Aviv proved to be fertile soil, and collaborations with a variety of artists led to playing the local circuit and gaining experience as a live performer. Today, Richter juggles a range of sonic projects, performing in clubs, composing music for contemporary dance, designing sound for the visual arts, and producing recorded pieces across a number of genres."

Bloody Marys with an Angry Goddess (CM16) by Ian Richter

New release from supporting member Ian Richter available on Bandcamp and other digitial outlets.

"A short visit to the Indochinese Peninsula at the wrong time of the global pandemic breakout, led Ian Richter to over a year and a half of living in Vietnam, and to a deep love affair with the Vietnamese folk religion. Ian was intrigued to find a place drenched in culture and mysticism existing hand in hand with hyper capitalism (yet officially committed to socialism).

Over the course of the last 18 month Ian recorded, mentally and physically, the sounds of his encounters and experiences. From daily life, through industrial and natural landscapes, to ancient and modern dance, forging foreign with familiar, mysticism with science, and claustrophobia with liberation.

Ian Richter - Liễu Hạnh [Official Video]

Some additional info via supporting member, Ian Richter:

"The story behind the Liễu Hạnh video started when I was invited by the Morua artist collective to compose and perform music for one of their experimental pieces. The idea was to live and work together in central Vietnam for two weeks, and then tour the country with the finished piece. Shortly after arriving in Hội An, fate took an ill twist and that plan fell through, but living in close quarters in a small town, we started getting to know each other and exchanging ideas. That progressed naturally into working on smaller collaborations together, one of which ended up being between myself and Nguyễn Hạ Xuân Nguyên, a choreographer with a background in both contemporary and traditional Vietnamese dance. Nguyên and I kept the process intuitive, and found a location that we both felt suited the spirit of the material. The final video was shot in a single take."

Ian Richter - Demonesque & Lavished

Ian Richter - Demonesque & Lavished from Nimrod Alexander Gershoni on Vimeo.

via Ian Richter:

"I recently performed a continuous 18-minute piece with my small eurorack modular system and a Korg MS2000, that moves from abstract soundscapes into more structured songs with vocals and then back again. Artist Nimrod Alexander Gershoni filmed the performance and then manipulated the video to create a dark psychedelic journey that doesn't quite fall into the 'music video' or 'live performance video' categories, but somewhere in between.

A Performance by Ian Richter at Hanut 31 Tel Aviv.
Song 1 Demonesque
Song 2 Lavished
As part of 'N-Armed Bandit' Exhibition closing event.
Video Production by Nimrod Alexander Gershoni.
July 2015.

Inventions for 3u 104hp Eurorack II

A new release from supporting MATRIXSYNTH Member, Ian Richter. His previous release was featured here.

"my journey into modular synthesis has taken me through another interesting waypoint. there's something about the tactile wires-out rawness of this interface that i can connect to. i manipulate intuitively, i move functionally, i think expressively.

though the eurorack system i own is extremely limited in its capabilities, the more i am forced into corners, the more i enjoy the results. minimal square waves that drone unforgivingly; sine waves that beep along like a morse code machine stuck on a single letter; it's a gas.

this ep, "inventions for 3u 104hp eurorack" was not planned, just like the synth patches that make up its tracks. i found it fitting to place it in series after the previous eurorack album, mainly because of the ambience and approach that was used within the creative process.

You can keep track of Ian Richter on Facebook.

Ivn Riptek - Consciousness Projection at 31°15'33N, 35°14'40"E

SEKRET PAKT

This one is in via supporting member, Ian Richter.

"An excerpt from an audio-visual cross-dimensional consciousness projection by ivn riptek.

We have information that leads us to believe that we will soon be receiving a data package from Ivn Riptek that we understand will contain a number of audio recordings.

Unfortunately, due to our lack of technological understanding with regards to cross-dimensional data transfer, and due to the the complexities of quantum manipulation in general, communication with Mr. Riptek has been challenging.

If our calculations are correct, our prediction is that the files will be available for release around mid 2021.
