Monophonic Synth Technique with the Misa Kitara (and Cakewalk z3ta+ 2 VST)

YouTube Published on Apr 21, 2012 by misadigital

"Here I connect the kitara to the cakewalk z3ta+ 2 software synthesizer. Basically, the kitara becomes an extension to the synth, as a new way to control it. If you have cakewalk z3ta+ 2, you can download this particular sound preset from here: http://www.misadigital.com/misa_monophony.fxp

The glide/portamento of a synth is a very overlooked aspect of synthesizers, especially from a guitar synth perspective. The idea behing this video is to show how you can get a more "sequencer" type sound using the kitara's onboard sustain functionality.

In this video the kitara is tuned to E3, A4, D5, G5, B5, E6 (notice bottom E is an extra octave lower). Also, tap mode is on, and the sustain function should be enabled.

Ps. I actually took this riff from one of the z3ta showcase sequences, because I thought it sounded awesome!"

1. BALL_X = CC16
2. BALL_Y = CC17
3. TOUCH_X = CC18

And on the z3ta synth, set filter cutoff to CC16 and filter resonance to CC17 (you do this by right clicking on the control knobs)."

Misa Kitara Digital Guitar Midi Controller Virtual Synthesizer

via this auction

"Misa Digital Kitara Digital Guitar Details

A very unique and powerful tool that brings the world of midi, in a familiar feel to guitarists, the Misa Digital Kitara Digital Guitar is an experimental new instrument, similar to an electric guitar in shape, but with an interface designed to easily and intuitively control digital audio. Most musicians today use some form of audio synthesis or sampling in their music. Virtually any type of sound can be created using these methods. Traditionally, digital piano keyboards have been the dominant instrument for controlling these sounds real-time in a musical setting. The Kitara is a new instrument that not only unites traditional guitar playing technique with digital sound, but allows digital guitarists to use playing techniques that are not possible or comfortable on a digital keyboard.

The Misa Kitara consists of three main components: a full fretboard, a multi-touch screen and an onboard polyphonic synthesizer with sounds and effects. The Kitara's neck has 24 frets, but instead of strings each fret contains buttons. You play notes by touching on the screen. The position and movement of your touch determine how the sound is generated and processed. You can apply a number of digital effects, including distortion, delay and modulation, and you can control these effects through the touch panel interface. You can save sounds as presets, and you can swap preset files online. You can assign one sound to all six strings, or assign different sounds to different strings. The Kitara can control compatible MIDI devices too. Everything is configurable. It runs Linux and is open source

Winter NAMM '12 - Misa Digital Kitara Digital Guitar
Digital Guitar cover of Skrillex / Benassi - Cinema

via this auction

"The Misa Kitara is a digital MIDI controller and musical instrument developed in 2011 and discontinued in 2013. It allows for a guitar player to produce a synthesized sound using techniques and motions referential to guitar playing.

The Kitara was the first digital musical instrument to combine the use of touch buttons for strings and frets with an 8 inch multi-touch screen. The player controls sound effects and parameters through this display, as opposed to strumming strings like on a traditional guitar. The display allows for comprehensive control as well as a wide-variety of noise and effect production. The produced sound changes based on the position, number, and movement of fingers on this display.

The Kitara uses an internal wavetable synthesizer with effects to generate sounds by itself. The Kitara is powered by an open-sourced Linux based CPU, making it possible to reprogram the Kitara, modify existing sounds, and program new ones.

Watch the videos in this link to get a up close look at how it works."

misa kitara digital guitar palm muting

YouTube Uploaded by misadigital on Mar 21, 2011

"http://www.misadigital.com - for preorder and more info

my personal opinion is that a true digital guitar is not just about "triggering notes" - it's about controlling sound. it's about making the instrument feel like it was designed FOR synthesis, instead of the other way around. playing guitar involves complex interactions, and synthesizers have complex parameters. the misa kitara meshes these two concepts together not with overly complex algorithms, but with an (IMHO) elegant solution that works with the core concepts in synthesis.

all sound in the video is generated by the kitara only."

NEW Misa Kitara - Sustainer & ZynAddSubFx VST (shipping this month!)

YouTube Uploaded by misadigital on Aug 30, 2011
"there have been lots of requests for showing the misa kitara connected to an external software synthesizer via MIDI.

so in this video I have connected the kitara to my PC running my favourite open source synthesizer - zynaddsubfx (I recommend checking it out, it has some really interesting features).

also in this video, I show you how to sustain notes - you just drag upwards and any strings you have pressed down will not stop playing when you release them.

pressing another button on the string will set the sustained note to the newly designated one.

also you can see "tap mode" in this video, where the screen is red. in this mode you can press the buttons on the neck and hear a sound, without pressing the touchpanel. it's good for two handed tapping technique (although you can see how important using the touch panel is to re-attack the notes you are playing).

ps. use headphones if you want to hear the bass!! :)"

NAMM & NOT NAMM - New Products on the Synth Front

Well, it's that time of year again. Keep an eye out on the NAMM label (added to top right menu) for everything NAMM and more. More in that anything new will get the label whether it's shown at NAMM or not. It's about new gear. Updates in this post will be preceded in red. Some already in below. See "The NAMM List!" link under the Twitter, Facebook, and RSS labels on top of the right to get back to this post later.

(A note on the top site menus: I removed the iPhone and iPad labels as they go up in posts every day now so you can find them there. eBay links are on the right, so I removed it as well.)

That said, the following are some of the things to look out for. If you have any NAMM info feel free to comment and/or send it in. If I missed anything, let me know! If you are going to NAMM, feel free to send pics and video in.

Introducing the Misa Digital NSC-32 Note Sequence Controller

Published on Dec 20, 2015 misadigital

"Mixing with note patterns. Note Sequence Controller."

You might remember Misa from their Kitara.

"The Misa Digital NSC-32 (NSC) is a Note Sequence Controller - a new type of electronic musical instrument that allows the user to manipulate and cue electronic music sequences live. It is an alternative take on a "step sequencer".

It is a MIDI controller and makes no sound of its own - it connects to a synthesizer/sampler/DAW via MIDI or USB.

The NSC-32 can play up to six sequences (patterns) simultaneously. Typically each pattern will be responsible for a different section of the music. For example: one pattern for drums, one pattern for bass and one pattern for chords.

Note sequences are visually displayed on the note grid and can be modified by pressing the cells on the note grid. The individual notes are represented as blue illuminated cells. Notes can be selected, copied, moved and pasted using the control functions.

A vertical green step cursor will move across the note grid at a speed determined by the BPM set. When the step cursor lands on a note, it will play that note. Similarly, when the cursor moves off a note, it will stop playing that note.

Sequences can be played (cued) and stopped in sync with the master clock.

Sequences can be stored in permanent storage for later use. The NSC-32 can store up to 768 sequences. Each cell on the note grid behaves as a save location. This means you can visually group different sets of presets on the grid based on category.

More info coming soon."

Misa Kitara Demo Song

YouTube Uploaded by misadigital on May 15, 2011

"This is a quick "demo song" to show some of the capabilities of the misa digital guitar.

Note 1: For some crazy reason iPhone youtube plays this video mono/single channel so you cannot hear the stereo delay at the end, so the resulting effect is lost.

Note 2: This is an old prototype with the wrong finish, the final product looks much better.
