Behringer's UB-Xa Arrives

video upload by Behringer

"The long wait is over. The UB-Xa is ready to be unleashed.

After 6 years of intense development, what started as a labor of love morphed into a development of the most complex and versatile platform to serve not only the UB-Xa but all our polyphonic synthesizers we have planned.

'A special thank you goes to all our engineers and beta testers who spent years with us designing, engineering, testing, and fine tuning this beautiful instrument. We are immensely grateful for all your contribution.' - Uli

Music and Video created by Patrick with the UB-Xa."

Update: "List Price: $1,499 (stay tuned for a little surprise)"

Behringer notes it will be available on Amazon of all places.

"Classic Analog 16-Voice Multi-Timbral Polyphonic Synthesizer with 8 Vintage Modes, Dual VCFs and 61-Key Poly After-Touch Keyboard

Embrace the legacy and make your mark on history with the UB-Xa from Behringer. More than just a recreation of a classic synthesizer, we’ve made sure that the UB-Xa has all the bells, whistles and characteristics that came with the original, but it’s also filled to the brim with modern features such as velocity and after-touch, 512 user program memories and comprehensive MIDI implementation. This makes for a well-rounded synth that’ll make friends with anything in your setup.

Faithful Recreation and More
To recreate its iconic growl and sizzle, we dove deep into the inner workings of the original OB-Xa and brought them into the 21st century including all its original factory patches that made the 80s roar. Thanks to its VCOs and VCFs heavily based on the original 3340 and 3320 chip designs, 16 voices and the ability to split its keyboard so you can layer 2 different sounds, the UB-Xa is capable of conjuring up massive sounding riffs.

An Icon for the Icons
The UB-Xa is a synth like no other that stands on the shoulders of giants! Its legacy is what gave birth to the 80s most iconic hits from the world’s most famous artists! From Rush’s Geddy Lee, The Police, Prince to Van Halen, and even the iconic Terminator theme composed by Brad Fiedel, the UB-Xa’s lineage is filled only with the greats and now you can make your own mark on history as well."

Soon to be available on Amazon.

Behringer UB-Xa - - Milestone - - by "The Synth King"

video upload by The Synth King

"This video showcases a complete song I´ve composed and produced with sounds exclusively from the Behringer UB-Xa (except drums). The opening bass line was made with the built in step sequencer running in sync to the DAW. I've used a single reverb and two delay plugins for this track. There is no EQing or dynamic processing involved. All sounds were recorded directly into the audiointerface."

Update via Behringer:

"As we’re getting ready for the production of the long awaited UB-Xa, we’d like to share a beautifully crafted video of the Synth King.

It demonstrates that this amazing synth is not only capable of capturing the legacy sounds of the ‘80s but also deliver modern sounds and timbres.

The UB-Xa is one of our most complex products we have ever designed in our 35 years of history. 15 engineers worked over 4 years, delivering 8 hardware revisions and countless firmware upgrades, while co-innovating with 20 beta testers who all own the original OB-Xa synth. Our objective was to spend as much time and resources it takes and only release it when it is perfect. The UB-Xa is now completed and we’re ramping up for production. As Uli stated from the beginning, this synth was never meant as a commercially driven product, but rather a labor of love. In fact, it might never make us any money and that’s OK. For that reason, we plan to offer if at the lowest possible price and at a fraction of competitive products.

We’re sorry this has taken so long but we now have a synth jewel we’re very proud of and a fantastic platform that will allow us to deliver new poly synths at a much shorter time. We’d like to thank all the beta testers who spent years and countless hours to help us bring the UB-Xa to life.

And finally, we’d like to thank all of you for your support and patience. You’re the reason why we love what we do."

An Update on the Behringer UB-Xa - OB-Xa

And update from Uli Behringer on UB-Xa development, spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

"Hello everyone,

I like to give you an update on the UB-Xa development.

When I announced the project some time ago, I mentioned that it would take at least a year as it is a "labor of love" and our Midas engineer would do this as a side project since their main priorities are with digital mixing consoles.

Because of their high workload, the development of the UB-Xa had unfortunately stalled for quite some time.

Good news is that the team is working on it again and we have just finished all schematics and the mechanical design while the team is now focusing on the board layout and firmware.
This is a major job and don't expect anything soon, however we are confident that we will deliver this project as promised and hopefully at a price which will make everyone happy.

In order to maintain the integrity of the original sound design, we've been using 3340 and 3320 VCO's and VCF's but replaced the outdated digital section with very powerful Arm Processors.

Thanks for your patience.

Uli"

Behringer UB-Xa - Beta Testing Concluded

video upload by Behringer

"After 3 long years of intense development, we have now finally completed the design of the UB-Xa.

What started as a mere recreation of the original OB-Xa, has grown into a monster synthesizer with many more features and sound palettes.

We have now started the manufacturing planning, which will still take some time due to the global component shortages.

We like to take the opportunity to thank all our 20 fabulous beta testers who tremendously helped us to fine tune and meticulously compare our UB-Xa with the sound and performance of the original OB-Xa. The beta testing process has taken more than one year.

We know you have been waiting for a long time but we promise that this synth will blow you away and exceed all your expectations."

Behringer Announces the UB-Xa - Oberheim OB-Xa Desktop Clone

Note this is likely more than a year out.

Per Uli Behringer:

"As many of you know, synths have been my passion for the past 40 years. Sometime ago I have set the goal for Behringer to bring back some of the loved analog synth jewels from the past.

Please allow me to share some thoughts with you and apologies if this is a longer thread.

Does this make any commercial sense?

Every company has to earn money in order to survive, and so do we. However, since we are privately owned, we don’t really care about the next quarter’s result or 'shareholder value' since it is our philosophy to reinvest everything we earn.

This gives us the tremendous freedom to work on projects that can only be described as 'labor of love' as they might not yield any financial gains. This is why we embark on these synth projects; some of them might not sell in high quantities and frankly to us it doesn’t really matter.

Many of our competitors spend all of their effort on marketing to make you believe in analog synth emulation simply because it’s much easier and cheaper to assemble a DSP chip on a PCB board rather than building products with thousands of analog components and deal with the manufacturing complexity plus expensive manual calibration processes.

However we at Behringer and Midas believe in the passion to revive these analog jewels and the fun these projects create for our team - which to us is worth everything.

Why we believe in analog?

We at Behringer do not believe in 'virtual analog', VST’s or other creative names for digital sound emulations as we are of the firm opinion that you cannot replicate true analog sound through digital technology, and there are many technical reasons for this. To be very clear, this doesn’t mean digital synths or VST’s can't sound great, but it is just something we don’t believe in.

Our passion and emotions are with true analog synths and our goal is to bring back the authentic sound of original designs from the period of the 60’s to the 80’s. In order to achieve the exact same sound, we will use the same circuitry and where possible the same components, however we will apply modern manufacturing technologies to make these instruments affordable, mass producible and reliable for the long-term use.

In many cases we will also remanufacture obsolete components if we feel they are relevant to the sound. In short we will not spare any effort in order to capture the spirit of these synths as it is all about authenticity.

Why do we make this announcement?

For the first time in our 30 year history, we have decided to completely open up our company and share every step of the development process with you so you can ask questions while we will be seeking your opinions.

In fact we want you to participate in this end-to-end process so we can learn from you, but also for you to fully understand how such a synth is developed and manufactured.

What is the UB-Xa synthesizer?

Over the past years we have done a lot of research both on forums but also through interviews with professional musicians in order to understand what the most sought after synths and drum machines are, but also what people feel the sound signatures of these synths are and why people feel so strongly about them.

When it comes to poly-synths the overwhelming request is a rebirth of the Oberheim OB-Xa.

Today I officially announce that we have decided that we will develop and produce an authentic OB-Xa clone which we call the UB-Xa. As you can imagine, this is a very complex and time-consuming project and at this stage we won’t be able to tell you when the instrument will be available in the market or what it will cost.

Since this is more a labor of love than a commercially viable project, our engineers can’t work fulltime on this synth and will use some of their free time, hence the project will likely take more than 12 months.

Most importantly, our goal is to make it an absolute authentic sounding instrument and offer it at a truly affordable price - but you know this already.

Because of its high complexity, we have assigned this project to our most experienced team which is the Midas team in Manchester, UK. These synth nuts and super-smart engineers - under the leadership of Pete and Rob - were also the ones who developed the successful DeepMind12.

So what’s next?

In around one week from now, Pete and Rob will post our first video and share some thoughts with you. Our intention is to not only post videos on a regular basis but also write articles and publish them on our social media pages so you can follow this project.

Now that we have decided on the project, next is the discussion around the basic concept, the feature set and also the building blocks including potential component choices. In the near future we will be able to show you the first 'bread boards' of the sound engine and hopefully let you hear some sound samples.

Next will be PCB and mechanical designs, followed by hand- and tool made samples. And then of course we will be sharing the exciting mass production where we will be showing the production setup and testing plus quality control processes. And if you’re not yet bored by then, we can also show you the packaging and shipping process.

The team in Manchester and I are very excited about this project and we hope that many of you will chime in and participate.

And one more thing - once we’re nearing shipping, we will be raffling off some free units among you as a token of appreciation.

May the fun begin☺

Uli"

Behringer UB-Xa - Synth King Presets

video upload by The Synth King

"I had the honor to be part of the beta tester team for the Behringer UB-Xa. We worked very hard during the last few years to get everything spot on. All members of the team had a vintage OB-Xa and OB-8 for in depth comparison and measurement. This video showcases a few of the custom presets I´ve created for the UB-Xa. The sounds were recorded without any effects, dynamic processing or whatsoever straight into the audio interface. For the performances in split mode I´ve added a slight touch of reverb. The synthesizer in the video is an early preproduction unit with the firmware in development."

New Behringer UB-Xa Design is Complete

An update via Uli Behringer spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

"Here's another exciting update.

We have now completed the entire hardware design, which includes all PCB's and mechanical aspects.

The next step is to build our first working prototype and we hope to show a physical sample in around a month time.

Please bear in mind that we're now starting the most time consuming part, which is the firmware development, which will take considerable amount of time.

While we'll be able to reuse some of the DeepMind firmware, most will be new as we're moving to a high-performance ARM processor platform. This is especially useful as it allows for us to design upcoming synths in a very efficient manner.

Happy New Year everyone.

Uli"

The UB-Xa of course is Behringer's "clone" of the Oberheim OB-Xa.

Behringer UB-Xa - Custom Sounds - Sonorous Vol.2

video upload by Scott McAuley Sounds

"Patches will be available at https://www.orano.co.uk/shop or http://www.synthsounds.co.uk

Excited to announce the release of Sonorous Volume.2 for the UB-Xa and what a great synth it is too. Full of the usual carefully programmed lush pads, keys, basses, leads, Strings and more.

I have had quite a few requests to make my banks smaller to allow people to buy the patches in stages, so Volume.1 is also just complete and live on the Site,

The entire of Vol.1 and Vol.2 are using UB-Xa Atrophy setting No 1 - Ue/XW so no need to change any settings. I supply my voice panning settings in the pack instructions, but that can be changed to suit the users taste :)"

via this listing

"I am a music hobbyist, a bassist in fact, and this synth belongs in the hands of a professional keyboard player or producer ... or anyone with more talent than me. I'm sure someday soon I'll regret selling it. But frankly though, I bought it because I couldn't wait for the Behringer UB-Xa any longer. But now that I have the UB, which in no way sounds as beautiful as the OB-X8, I'm selling the OB.

Now that I have the two to compare, the most immediate difference is the build quality of the OB so completely outshines the UB. Next is the tone. The lows and especially the lo-mids are tight and clear on the OB. The UB is a bit boomy or mushy in comparison with a tendency to overdrive without adjustment on the board. The OB also has more preset storage, 128 more locations. However, given my lack of skills, musical and financial needs, I've got to sell the OB. My loss is your benefit."

See this previous post for build quality on the UB-Xa.

Behringer Introduces the UB-1 Spirit for $49

Another mini synth from Behringer. Curious what makes one a Spirit vs. Soul. So far they have introduced the ProVS Soul, the JP-4000 Spirit, the Saturn Soul, and now the UB-1 Spirit. I thought this one was based on the OB-Xa/upcoming UB-Xa, but per below it uses the Matrix-6/1000 CEM 3396/3397. via Wikipiea: "CEM3396 Microprocessor Controllable: Wave-Shaper x2, VCF, VCA. CEM3397 same core design as CEM3396 but with separate external signal (noise/sub/wavetable) input and VCA to mix stage and additional Pan VCA and L/R output stage. Originally labelled MS1215 and designed for Marion Systems MSR-2. Relabeled as PA397 for DSI."

I'm guessing no matrix modulation on the UB-1. It's not a mini Matrix-6/M1000. It just uses the chip.

Details:

"Introducing the UB-1, a Portable Analog Synthesizer with 2 Analog Oscillators, Classic VCF and Arpeggiator.

Uli passionately believes in empowering everyone by providing access to great sounding musical instruments, especially for kids, so they can start a lifelong love affair with electronic music and sound synthesis.

The UB-1 synthesizer is fully developed and once we receive the chips, we’ll be shipping this marvel your way. Don’t be fooled by the size - this is a monster synth in a small package. Best of all the estimated price is only US$ 49.

What’s under the tiny hood?

- Programmable synthesizer with 2 DCOs and classic 4-pole filter

- Legendary 3396/3397 analog chip design, found in the Oberheim Matrix 6/1000*

- 16 touch
-sensitive keys for great playability

- 32 memory presets, expandable via SynthTribe app

- Arpeggiator with 3 patterns and hold function

- Individual envelopes for VCF and VCA for creative sound shaping

- 2 powerful LFOs to control filter and oscillator tuning

- 6 functions buttons and OLED display for easy and immediate parameter editing

- USB Micro connector allows powering via smartphone, power bank or computer

- Comprehensive USB/MIDI implementation (including NRPN/CC control of all parameters and bulk load/save)"

Behringer Reveals New UB-X Keyboard Synthesizer

via Behringer

"UB-X is alive!

Today we've fired up the first complete prototype - what an amazing moment.

We’re now starting to implement the firmware and do thorough testing. Please bear in mind that we’re still far away from shipping the UB-X, but we’re making huge progress.

Isn't it a beautiful synth?"

The UB-X was first teased by Behringer back in April, 2022. The of course released the UB-XA. Curious if they will follow up with a UB-16 based on the OB-8.

Behringer Teases New UB-X for $1199 w/ Involvement from Engineer with Experience with the OB-X

Note Sequential owns the trademark for the OB-X. No mention of who the engineer is:

"We have some exciting news for you. In our constant search to hire passionate and experienced engineers, we found a fantastic analog engineer, who has not only decade-long synth design experience, but also specific knowledge related to the OB-X circuitry.

The OB-X is quite different from other synths, as it uses predominantly discrete circuitry, which makes the design and manufacturing more challenging.

This development will now give us a massive head start and we immediately formed a focused engineering team to start the development of the UB-X.

As we recently shared with you, now that we have fully developed the firmware platform for the UB-Xa, we can reuse up to 80% for the next Poly synths such as the UB-X, which will tremendously speed up the development.

We’re super excited about this project and will hopefully announce the lead engineer in the near future. If you like to join this amazing team and have deep experience with mixed architecture hardware or embedded software design, please send your resume to joinus@musictribe.com.

We target to offer an 8-voice UB-X for US$ 1.199 retail.

What do you think about the features, overall design and price?"
