I dont think these simulations are that accurate but you can have a lot of fun with it anyway, and it comes for free. Yesterday I played around with the Arp 2600 and create really sick sounds with all oscillators modulating each other and the filter.
ReplyDeleteas always looks great, but does it sound as it looks.. my impression is - just put nice pics up and it sounds.. do you all believe, it's ok..
ReplyDeleteI know even a number of VAs that do not even compete to the ms20 which is not really a "perfect" synth..
maybe we all listen too much mp3s these days and some ppl think "synths sounds silly.. I go on with my e-bass"..
this is not really about these images, but overallglobalview™ .. please watch: 200€ is not so much for a synth, but they have to save the money somewhere.. take the 3.5 DSP insted of the $5.5 one, etc..
I hope we will signal the companies: give us quality.. and then it is is no problem to have other than known synths on ours screens..?
cant really follow the post above (but yes, I hate MP3s too and prefer Ogg which have less artifacts) but hope it doesn't say that expensive gear creates automatically good music. A bad song doesn't get better when a Moog is used.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't trust companys that much to come up with some new ideas. R&D is expensive and plugins simulating tb303s seems still to sell well (although meanwhile poly analogues seems to be soup de jour). Most innovations comes from the academic circles and are either bought like FM or Physical Modellung by Yamaha, or released as freeware anyway. On Linux there are loads of wired academic software creating unheared sounds, but Bristol is a good application to have just some fun the oldschool way without thinking to much :)
free stuff is free to sound good or bad I think: it is just that expensive software doesn't always sound that good to justify its price.
