Mono Two by Monomono: MS20 Spirit Inside Ableton Live
video upload by Isotonik Studios, Monomono Audio · Max for Live Devices, Push Patterns
"Mono Two by Monomono is a monophonic Max for Live synthesiser built around the semi-modular spirit of the Korg MS20, optimised for Ableton Live and fully operational on Push 3 Standalone. In this walkthrough we go from first filter sweep to full patchbay session, covering everything that makes this device tick. Monomono have expanded on the original MS20 architecture with dual filter circuit switching, tempo-synced LFO, bipolar and unipolar envelope modes, stereo spread, and a guided patchbay with attenuator and multiplier utilities.

Mono Two is built around two oscillators, two resonant filters, two envelope generators, and a modulation generator. Oscillator one covers triangle, sawtooth, square, and noise with pulse width control; oscillator two adds sawtooth, square, pulse width, and ring modulation, with a pitch dial and linkable volume for both. The dual filter section lets you choose between the K35 circuit for a gnarly, overdriven character and the OTA circuit for a cleaner, more controlled tone, switchable in real time. The LFO offers a continuously variable triangle-to-square shape, free or tempo-synced rate, and phase reset. Envelope Generator 1 handles frequency modulation with delay, attack, and release; Envelope Generator 2 adds hold, legato switching, and a bipolar or unipolar mode that fundamentally changes how the sustain stage interacts with the filter. A stereo spread control moves the output from pure mono to full stereo, and the hidden patchbay page exposes modulation routing with guided orange highlights, a voltage attenuator, and a signal multiplier for sending one source to multiple destinations.
Mono Two is at its best when you use the patchbay to break the hardwired signal flow and route modulation sources in unexpected directions, pulling classic MS20 textures like sample-and-hold alien noise from a pink noise generator clocked through the VCO total input. The real-time filter circuit switching lets you move from aggressive, self-oscillating leads to smoother melodic basslines within a single performance. Bipolar envelope mode creates dynamic filter movement that always resolves back to the held note, making expressive legato playing feel genuinely musical rather than mechanical. On Push 3 Standalone the patchbay is navigable page by page, so you can build and adjust modulation patches without touching a laptop."
