Synchonizing Electronic Musical Equipment and Acoustic Drums

YouTube Uploaded by artoftravelogue on Mar 12, 2012

"The ability to have sequences of different devices play in time together can be a challenge. In this video, I demonstrate how I synchronize various equipment. MIDI and DCB standards can also be easily synched, but are not shown in this video. I use primarily DIN Sync and analog clocks (including the Garfield MiniDoc) for this demonstration. The Casio and the DR110 have been modified to accept a clock input. The solenoid drum triggers were built by me and allow for dynamics (accents) - the roll in the drum pattern is programmed using a pulse LFO with an S/H modulation for random variation. There is more information on modifying clock signals at www.artoftravelogue.com."

Sequential Circuits Programmer comes in at 1:48. Aries modular audio comes in just before that. Watch through to the end for the drums being triggered by the Modcan.

Jon Sonnenberg - Travelogue Workspace - half of the studio

flickr By Jon Sonnenberg
(click through for mouse-over descriptions for each synth and more pics - that's an Aries modular on top and the custom monolith2 on the right - previously posted here)

You can find Travelogue here. Don't miss the EML Poly-box post here.

On the studio:
"As you can see, the studio is pretty packed. The only gear that does not belong to me is the Oberheim OB-1 and the Boss GT-5 which are borrowed from a friend. You can hover over the photo to see what the gear is. I make rules for myself when it comes to gear position. 1) I try to have all keys and controls within reach. 2) modulars are positioned where hanging cables will not get in the way of using other equipment. 3) equipment is not blocked by other equipment (this is the most challenging rule) 4) Everything is plugged into power strips and regulated through a SU700 UPS; though anything CAN be turned on, I try to keep the power load down by only turning on the equipment that I will use for the task at hand. I have a homemade DIN sync multiple connecting the MC-202, TR-808, TR-606, Mini Doc, XOXOX, and an MSQ-700 (usually for the Jupiter DCB, but can be switched to MIDI)"

The Wiard Zero Prototype & Bimorphic Filter Research Prototype

This one in via Mr. Array. What you are looking at is The Wiard Zero Prototype built into Aries 300 module frames. You can find more pics and details on this sub-page of Grant Richter's synth-DIY page. Be sure to check out his site for more. Grant is the man behind Wiard. The following is an excerpt on the Bimorphic Filter Research Prototype (more modules are listed in the sub-page linked above):

"There are so many good filters in the world. I wasn't even sure I was going to make one. A system isn't complete without a filter though. But what new twist can I bring to filter design? One thing I'd like to see is voltage control of filter type. The way this is done is to take the sections of a filter (called "poles") and surround them with a switch matrix so they can be rewired into useful filter types (lowpass, bandpass, highpass and phase shift). An analog to digital converter is used to control the switch matrix, giving voltage control of the type."

Mark Mothersbaugh "How to Score a Film" [Mr. Bonzai - Hai! Interview]

YouTube via MisterBonzai | March 24, 2010

"Composer for "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "The Royal Tenenbaums," "Rugrats," "Rushmore," etc... Join me in the Inner Sanctum of Mark O'Devo Mothersbaugh's laboratory at Mutato Muzika studios in Hollywood. Working only with his early tools, Mark reveals the intense concentration needed to score an entire feature length film. Watching in awe are 3 junior Mutato composers, Silas HIte, Albert Fox, John Enroth, and Mark's evil twin, General Boy -- ein Muzika Doppelganger! This is the very first film within a film of this kind. Shall we dance?"
