"This is essentially a hybrid of a Roland JX3P (oscillators) and Juno 106 (envelopes and filter) in a 2U rack. Thanks to the Juno filters, it has a more refined sound than the JX3P, but it still retains the crucial features of 2 DCOs and 3 envelopes of the KIWI mod....putting into Jupiter 6 territory. Actually smoother than a Jupiter 6 (I had one next to it for comparison for a while). If you like the Juno 106 sound but wish it had more advanced features, this is your dream synth.

Also including 6 extra original Juno voice chips that I pulled from my 106 when I upgraded to Analog Renasiance chips. This unit still has the original chips but they have been refurbished, so with this unit you'll have a total of 12 original Juno chips...plenty to last you if you're a stickler for the original sound (as am I).

Upgrade performed by a pro-technician. Here is the list of features:

1536 Tones in 3 Sets of 512 can be stored and all can be edited. It is also possible to edit any Tone using the front panel, PG-200 or midi.

Tones are stored in Flash memory so no battery is required.

MidiCC & Sysex support for parameters edits and Midi Sysex support for Tone Load. The Kiwi30 will support full midi control and editing in real time. Midi thru maintained on this unit.

"Cosmetically, this unit is extremely unique. It has been painted purple with yellow trim, with a large vintage Batman sticker placed central to the back of the enclosure on top of additional purple-painted tape. The knobs have also been painted purple. There is a fair bit of honest wear across the enclosure, but nothing extending beyond minor nicks and dings. Additionally, some of the yellow spray paint extends to the upper two octaves of keys and cheek."

"The KiwiSix upgrade significantly expands overall functionality and mitigates several issues common to the PolySix, including replacing the original KLM-367 circuit board; which are frequently corroded due to the frequent failure of the original nickel-cadmium batteries. The KiwiSix upgrade also provides 512 tone slots, all able to be stored/edited, with 64 preloaded tones. Sequencing capability is increased; 8 separate 124-max step sequences can be edited and stored. Additionally, the KiwiSix enables MIDI functionality, with the ability to independently set the MIDI In & Out channels. The Arpeggiator and Sequencer can both output MIDI, and the Sequencer can be entirely dictated by MIDI input. The internal clock hardware has been overridden and expounded upon; now able to clock the Arpeggiator and/or Sequencer and can optionally generate a MIDI clock. Key Transposition augmentation allows transposition from 1 octave down to 2 octaves up."

Roland JX-3P & Kiwi mod | Stay away from this?

An interesting take from Espen Kraft. I always assumed these mods kept the original sounds and functionality, and simply expanded on them. Feel free to leave a comment if you know more. Key point: do your research before modding.

"After using a Kiwi modded JX-3P for quite some time I can honestly say I really dislike this mod. Way too many features, hard to access, bugs, but most of all; they changed things that makes the modded 3P sound inferior to the original synth. Especially the envelopes. With a Kiwi modded 3P you get envelopes that sounds more clinical and less musical than on the original synth.

Admittedly the new controller from Retroaktiv, the PG-2K makes it a lot faster and easier to access the parameters, but even that can't take away that the mod is a bad choice for any 3P lovers. I highly advice to stay away from these mods.

The above rant is of course my highly biased opinion I admit to that. ;-)"

"The PG-2K controller from Retroaktiv can control any JX-3P. Factory 3P, Kiwi modded 3P or any 3P/MKS-30 CC modded model. In the case of the Kiwi, all Kiwi mods are supported and it makes it so much easier to use the arcane Kiwi mod."

"This is a great analog synth from the mid-1980's. This one has the Kiwi Mod installed which adds hundreds of sound slots, adds more modulation options, stores patches in static RAM (so no battery needed anymore), etc.

Includes the original Roland hard case.

The synth is in very good shape and everything works EXCEPT the arpeggiator and the sequencer features of the Kiwi Mod do not work. This could be fixable. I didn't do the mod and when I bought it things didn't work right. I found a short between two data lines caused by a tiny solder blob. Once I removed that, the synth played perfect except for the arp and sequencer. Maybe the installer made some other minor mistake affecting these other features. (This may have to do with the resistors that get altered when mod is installed. I just don't have time to look.)"
